This book is so good! Carol Blackburn covers a lot of different techniques and some that I already knew... well, she explains them in a way that makes more since than the way I was first shown. My only compliant about the work about is that the type is small which makes it difficult to read. This is not the author's fault, but the publishers and it makes me sad as anyone working in Polymer Clay needs this book, as it makes a wonderful reference book! It was recommended by one of my friends who works in polymer clay and I am so glad she recommended it. as it is as good as she said it would be!

This is the 3rd time that I bought this book. I used the first book so much that it was falling apart. The second book was lost during a move and now I am purchasing it again. It is the BEST book that I've found for everything to do with polymer clay. Don't let the name fool you. It isn't just for bead making. It covers so many techniques such as how to create faux stones/gems, wood, and coral. It also demonstrates the Skinner method and creating canes to name a few. What I like about it is there are lots of photos and step-by-step instructions. It was one of the first books that I used when I starting working with polymer clay, and it is now considered my polymer clay bible. I've found some books that were decent, but none have compared to this one. If you are new to using polymer clay, this is a definite must-have.

I found this a wonderful how to book on the techniques I want to make faux: Amber, turquoise, and many others. Also lots of general tips for a semi newbie like myself

Great book with so many pictures and instructions on bead making, from the different styles and shapes to different style techniques and faux gemstone techniques. The instructions are pretty easy and it really is a good catch all of the different things you can do with polymer clay. Its an older book but in no means obsolete!I would recommend this book highly for anyone new to polymer clay as it has easy stuff as well as more advanced techniques. It is also very easy to modify you own ideas to what is offered in the book, so it is very inspiring just to look at and come up with something that you would have not thought of before.

Wonderful book! If only there had been a "Look Inside" for it, I would have realized what a treasure it is and snapped it up long ago. As it is, I wasn't particularly attracted by the cover, and since I already had another great book on bead-making, I didn't think of buying this one until someone in the CITY-o-Clay group at Yahoo spoke well of it.It contains an extensive section on faux techniques, including wood, veined marble, leather, jade, silver, turquoise, lapis lazuli, ivory/bone, mother-of-pearl, abalone, bronze, amber, coral (had lots of fun making coral!), and easier ways than I had known up to now for making onyx, agate, and malachite. I especially enjoyed making the coral. There is also a section called "Bringing It All Together" that covers findings and threads, attaching findings, and designing with beads. This book is good even for complete beginners, but also holds inspiration for clayers beyond that stage. Just a few of the headings in the Materials and Techniques section: drilling, sanding, polishing, and varnishing/extrusions/coiled beads/mokume gane/mica shift/molding/color mixing/applique/inlay/transfers/caning/and Natasha beads (called "Rorshach beads" in this book--which is another great name for them)There are pictures of and directions for many unusual beads and although I had already learned most of the techniques described, I found a lot of useful tips and good ideas throughout the book and keep going back to it to remind myself of them and find more.If I were pressed to point out a fault, that is the lack of help in finding sources for tools, findings, and materials. A few "source" companies are mentioned in the credits at the back, but with no information beyond their URLs. Most books in this field have at least a page or two with the names and addresses/URLs of companies that sell the materials mentioned in the book, telling which company sells what. There is, however, a 2-page index to the book's contents; and on the last page you will find URLs for some helpful sites such as Glass Attic, Polymer Clay Central, and Polymer Clay Daily. Some of these contain forums, but Glass Attic is a sort of compendium of forum conversations on all aspects of polymer clay use, almost like an encyclopedia.So--no help finding tools and materials--but, ah well, nothing in life is perfect. This book is definitely worth having.

I bought this book on recommendation from other reviews here. Am I ever happy I did! This is definitely THE book for learning how to make faux effects! It happened that I had already been searching in vain for information on how to make imitation bone without having to purchase the product "Faux Bone", which is not within my budget. Lo and behold both imitation bone and ivory are in this book, and it looks real - as do the pearl, mother-of-pearl, abalone, coral, agate, jade, silver, gold, bronze, wood, turquoise, amber, lapis, etc. all appearing perfectly natural! The only effect that was not an exact facsimile was the malachite -- but with all those other delicious choices, who cares? But the book goes way beyond making fabulous fakes, the fantasy pieces are amazing, from wind-chimes to kaleidoscope! There are even pieces that look like blown glass. This whole book is just making my imagination go wild! There are techniques in this book that I have found nowhere else. Really, this book is a dream come true.If you are looking to find a book on using polymer clay and can only afford a single, all-purpose book, this is it. Buy it!

I read Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World yesterday. It was the day that the US House of Representatives failed to pass the big financial bail-out bill, the stock market tumbled, the 2008 election campaign season was in full roar, my car suddenly needed major repairs, and my seasonal allergies were again in evidence. It's not a perfect book, but I am so glad I read it. It was a welcome and refreshing change of subject from the bad, scary and tiresome things going on at home and around the world.I agree with another reviewer that it might have been a better, and shorter, book if focused more completely on Dewey the cat and the town of Spencer, with less of the author's personal story. But taken as it stands, it's still a heartwarming tale of a human-animal bond. There are parallels between the story and current events. The town of Spencer, Iowa, was going through tough economic times when that tiny kitten was dumped into the public library's book return slot on the coldest night of the winter, and our nation is in a serious economic mess now with scary forecasts of what's to come. A friendly little cat with a great sense of how to act with people didn't turn the town's economy around, but by doing his thing day in and day out he truly brightened so many lives that he did make things better in his little corner of the world. (No, I don't think there's a feline-based cure for our national economic system, but one can dream...)Not a perfect book, but at the end I was quite touched by the story of an extraordinary cat, a pretty special head librarian, and an above average small American town, who shared something we all need more of: respect, tolerance, fun, and love.

I wasn’t careful when I was ordering this book and thought I was getting the adult version of this book. I was surprised when I opened up my package and it was the children’s version. I checked my order and sure enough it was me that made the mistake! Regardless, I gave the book a try, since I am a cat lover and didn’t mind having a quick and easy read. This was a really sweet story. I loved reading about how Dewey made his life at the library. In addition to being a cat lover, I also work in a library. It made me wish for a library cat of my own! I enjoyed all the little anecdotes and loved the photos. I admit I teared up in a few spots. I certainly enjoyed the book, and will probably pass it on to my nieces. Just make sure you’re ordering the right version!

Vicki once again writes a great and compelling book, I will not spoil this for anyone but you must read all the way to the end, which can be hard for cat lovers. Dewey's life as told by her was mesmerizing as well as her insights into a small town and it's library and how a library works and her dreams and how she made them real for it.In this second book we get additional accounts of different cats and people along with a few more things about Dewey, especially after his death, it's not always feel-good and has some sorrow, so be prepared for that but it's worth all that to get to the end.

A very popular, cute, heartwarming story of love & compassion about a kitten who was found abandoned in the library Return Box overnight, but was rescued, nursed back to health & took up residence in the local library as its new home. This particular version is written on a child’s level & easy to read. My 9 yr old granddaughter LOVES this book & we have always checked it out of our library whenever she comes to visit if it is available at the time but when I saw this great deal on Amazon, I couldn’t help but grab it. I bought a “used” copy of the book for the best price but it is in very excellent condition. This particular version has become a “hard to find” book at a reasonable price but Amazon had the source. Now my granddaughter has her own copy to read when she is visiting & someday it will be hers to keep ...& be one of her memories of good times at Grandad & Nana’s house.

If you've ever owned a cat, you will just eat up every word, every adventure, every cuddle in this book. If you "dont know cats" this will take you into their world; it will show you the depth of their intelligence and capacity to love and care. The tale of the small almost-frozen cat being rescued by the library staff and becoming a fixture in the museum is well told. You can just see the cat chasing things, or being chased, and how it interacts with people -- particularly with grumps and physically disabled. The few sections about the health of the author (librarian) did not interest me, and I could have done without. I could re-read this book every few years and still giggle, swoon, or cry. It must be one of the top "gift books" published, as you will want to share it, and bring joy to others' lives.

#65,734 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I got this book as a Hanukkah present for my 9 year old and he loves it. It is beautifully illustrated and easy to read formatting. Very nice addition to his library.

I'm a Robot builder, and love this book, great child gift.

Got this for my friends 10 year boy and he loves it!

Excellent Book, really helpful

Hardcover book with everything you've ever wanted to know about robots. Has incredible pictures of all types of robots in every form. First part is called 'The Rise Of Robots' which talks about what a robot is and how they work, ancient and advanced automata, robots in culture, modern robotics and types of robots. Second part discusses robots in the home such as MiRo, SpotMini, Exotrainer, Zenbo, Home Helpers, Wheelie 7, Cozmo, Leka and Robot intelligence. Third part focuses on Robots At Work like LBR iiwa, Baxter, Online Programming, Da Vinci Surgical System, Offline Programming and Kilobots. From there it goes into Everyday Bots like Pepper, Gita, iCub, Sophia, Yumi, Zeno, Nao, Paro, FF01, Megabots, BionicOpter, Robot World, Robotic Kitchen and higher intelligence. Next chapter is 'Going To Extremes' with OceanOne, Sensors and Data, Bionicants, Octobots, eMotion Butterflies, Bionic Kangaroos, RoboBees and more. Last chapter centers around 'Hero Bots'- Mars 2020, Little Ripper Lifesaver, Method-2, Chimp, Guardian S, R5 Valkyrie and more. Each robot profile features some or all of these- origin or country in which the bot was developed, height of the robot, source of power, manufacturer or maker, weight, year developed or released and features or characteristics of the robot. Has all types of interesting facts and information on robots. Well worth the 13 dollars, looks like it's worth a lot more. I'd pay triple for it. Filled with cool pictures and facts.

I got this for my kids, aged 10 and 11. Girl and Boy. They both loved it, but it was funny as we turned the pages, they had seen half of these robots on youtube at some point or another. They knew all about the robots for autism and similar robots like that. My daughter wanted to buy the baby seal robot that is for people with Alzheimers or dementia, but they cost around $5k. The best option looks like the Asus robot that is around $600 if I recall. Almost all of the others (except a few like Cozmo) are quite pricey if you look them up.It does do a very good job of illustrating what the future is going to look like. We aren't too far off from the Jetsons and having robotic maids and such. One thing that gave me a little more faith in mankind and warmed my heart a little was how many of these robots are designed to help people with disabilities. One exo-bot helps people who are paralyzed to walk. Another helps quadriplegics to control their wheelchairs by facial expression. Many of the robots are designed to give companionship and comfort to people with depression, old age and various end-of-life illnesses. It is a well-done and high quality book that would be a great basis for school science projects and book reports and is just plain informative and fun, with great photography as well.

This is a cool and interesting book. As always with DK books, this one is colorful with illustrations and photos. It was heartwarming to read about the various robots being designed to help elderly or disabled people. It was simply fun to see all the robots being invented to help around the home and even outside the home. (It was hard to keep the theme song of "The Jetsons" out of my head while browsing through this book.)It's divided into sections. "The Rise of Robots" gives a bit of a science and history lesson regarding robots. "In the Home" and "At Work" give examples of robots helping do tasks around the home and at work, including medical assistance, surgery, or providing companionship. "Everyday Bots" gives us a look at mostly more human/animal like or interactive robots. "Going to Extremes" shows us robots designed after creatures from nature that do more extreme jobs. "Hero Bots" gives us a look at those robots that can potentially save lives by going into dangerous areas or situations and even rescue people. For any child(or adult) interested in robotics, this can be an inspiring book. I've enjoyed it!

This is a fantastic, up-to-date book about robotics technology, with eye-catching visuals and engaging text. The book opens with an introduction to what robots are as well as a few pages on the history of robots. For the rest of the book, each either presents an example of a real robot or discusses some aspect of robotics technology, such as intelligence, programming, or locomotion. The robots are organized into several types, including social robots, space robots, work robots, humanoid robots, etc. Each robot has a stats bar that gives important data such as its manufacturer, power source, height, weight, and more. This is an excellent reference book for anyone interested in robots. It also makes a fun coffee table book for those who want to pick it up, flip through, and learn something fascinating. It's perfect for adults or kids. Our three-year-old absolutely loves it. He flips back and forth and asks us all sorts of questions about the different robots. Of course his favorite page is the one with the robot from Terminator on it.
