Very few books have touched my life in the way this particular novel has. In the most sincerest sense, I truly mean that. Not only is this a story about a World War II solider and the experiences he had defending his country with great valor. It's a story about family, war, heart-break, loss, addiction, hurt, PTSD, death, illness, and the passage of time. The reader is gifted an in-depth view into the lives of the GIs during World War II and the tumultuous hardships they faced in the battlefields.Ted’s skillful writing shows with intense emotional detail how one person’s life can affect the generations to follow. In ways that are both profound, heartbreaking and incredibly authentic. Many memoirs sugar-coat the difficult situations and hard facts about life, especially life post-war. Unlike many memoir writers Ted bravely shares the sadness, truth, scars and beauty of the human condition and how the choices of his grandfather affected his life and family. Also Ted tackles the subject of death and how losing his grandfather propelled him to create this book and honor the life of this grandfather and the men he served with during the war.The book has many black and white photographs from World War II and each one is poignant and beautifully nostalgic. It's more than a novel, this book is a piece of historical art.

Everyone should read this book. I've read quite a few war and military memoirs, but this one felt different. Finding St. Lo is more about how a family member's experience can affect the entire family, and the ripple effects on generations to come. The experience of the soldier not only changes their perspective on life, but everyone's close to them. This book examines that often neglected fact. Highly recommended.

Once again, Ted Neill not only entertains but enlightens us about the impact war has on families and society. His newest book, Finding St. Lo, details accounts about WWII and the battle for St. Lo. Neill’s accounts come from his grandfather’s memoire and shows how war can devastate not only a nation but family culture, even after more than a half-century. His emotional account will connect with every family who has lost loved ones to war, and even those untouched by deadly battles. Ted Neill proves himself able to tackle the daunting task of writing about non-fiction using devices and strategies found in war novels. His work will soon become the status quo for bringing the greatest battles in history to print.

I absolutely loved this book! Ted Niell shares the story of his Grampa and how the soldier life effected the life of his family. The language was beautifully chosen and created a page turning experience. Ted Niell's writing makes you feel like you are sitting next to him as he is tells you the story. This book will make you evaluate how you live your life. You will be led to think about compassion, the common man, and how being a soldier is a wonderful yet life changing honor.

“We’ve come to realize more than ever, that even our heroes of old were imperfect.”Finding St. Lo: A Memoir of War and Family braids together author Ted Neill’s writing and reflections with the memoir left behind by Neill’s grandfather, Robert Fowler in order to reconcile the many sides of his grandfather. The book also works hard to explore the reality of war and the marks it leaves behind on those who return. To that end, it incorporates the writings and photographs of Gordon Cross. Both Fowler and Cross fought in the World War II battle for St. Lo in the 134th Infantry Division.Throughout, the book doesn’t shy away from the truth. Neill lays out the effect WWII had on his grandfather, including his alcoholism and potential infidelity, and identifies the impact these actions had on the family dynamic that surrounded his mother. His honesty creates an authentic narrative, which kept me connected, even through tragedy. Both Fowler and Cross explain plainly the violence, chaos, and death that surrounded them in battle. Cross’ photographs further this truth telling by lending an on the ground view into the destruction of war as he saw it.The multitude of voices offered the necessary perspective to fully cover something as large and multifaceted as war. Each perspective felt welcome and distinct from the other, showing the battle and its aftermath from a stoic, technical perspective as well as a more manic sensitive one. Neill’s voice remains the unifying factor, offering clarity and conclusions. At times the voices of the soldiers, Fowler, in particular, could become too technical for those uninitiated, but this was lightened by unexpected moments of humor or levity. In a few places it felt as though the narrative and the reflection battled for dominance, with Neill’s tangents into his own life feeling like a turn into introspection and away from exploring the lives of each soldier and their families. However, by the end of each tangent, Neill made connections which would point out another way that the shockwaves of war have carried down through generations and further reveal the monumental force that was Robert Fowler. All three voices work to humanize our heroes by exploring both their greatest triumphs and their greatest flaws. Closing the book with the photography of Gordon Cross, I was left with images of destruction but also of humanity. Ruined cities are sandwiched between images of soldiers leaning against Jeeps, smiling for the camera. Often in these photographs, Cross’ own shadow is visible, stretched out across the image. The dark shape is a reminder that he, and the soldiers like him, are still in the picture now. They remain. Their impact is still tangible in the families they raised when they returned, and we can still benefit from their stories if we take the time to listen.

Finding St. Lo: A Memoir of War and Family is like two or three books in one. The memoir of WWII veteran Robert Lewis Fowler makes up the bulk of the book, and it's a clear-eyed, impressively detailed text, but for me, the most valuable portions of the book come from Fowler's grandson Ted Neill. It would have been easy for Neill to lionize his grandfather, so I was taken aback by how easy Neill is to confront Fowler's faults while also taking time to acknowledge the positive effects he had on his upbringing. Neill also offers lots of photos along the way, and even includes a lengthy journal entry and huge selection of photos by WWII medic Gordon Edward Cross. Highly recommended for those interested in WWII history and its lasting effects on its participants and their descendants.Choice Quote: "My greatest fear was that I might not be able to control my fear. I was not alone with this. We all had our pride and self-esteem, and to lose it in the eyes of our buddies was as bad as death."

I've been trying to figure out the best way to review this book. On the one hand, hard-core rawies maybe won't like the fact that the authors are not 100% raw all the time. But me? I like this. They may say that the recipes are so simple, so why write them into a raw cookbook? Yes, they are simple, but they are very different than those I've seen in other raw books, and I have, I swear, most every raw book published! I enjoy and get inspiration and ideas from them all. But taste and simplicity are the themes here.In addition to the great recipes, this book is pretty - nice layout, photos, etc., and honestly I am a sucker for pretty books. But again, I am enamored with the ease of these recipes. I think it's almost validation for how I eat and most usually approach the raw thing, meaning - in the summer and early fall and even spring it's much easier and feels more natural to eat a lot of raw. But I live in the Midwest, and in the winter, it is very counterintuitive for me to hunt for pineapple and mango to make a smoothie. I want root vegetables - sometimes cooked - and miso soup. And I won't apologize for that. (There are no cooked recipes in here and none for miso soup, I was just making a point.) I do love the raw recipes that use these root veggies (parsnip, celery root, sweet potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes for example)and I am totally all over the fruit porridges. I'm making my own versions with seasonal fruit and chia seeds, and although many may say it's just a smoothie with less liquid, OK - but I didn't think of it - and I love it. Especially the idea to add celery. My non-raw husband also loved the taco fixings, which we had last night.I think those new to raw will love these recipes. And those who truly need or want to put something together quickly. A lot of books say "quick" but there are often hidden steps or recipes within recipes that make this misleading. In this book, NONE of the recipes require dehydration, so save for the recommended nut soaking in some recipes, these are very easy to do. Over this Memorial Weekend, the book has been my go-to for some needed cleansing and "body resetting." I think this is a great book for beginners, as well as for those of us who are a little burned out on the more involved recipes many raw food books contain. Right now, this is the way I want to eat, and I'm so glad I found this at a local bookstore so I could see it for myself. I look forward to more raw food books by these two women! (Hope you're working on one!)

I gave this 3 stars because the book is ok. Honestly, all the recipes that I have made were extremely bland. I didn't like how they don't mention how much each recipe will make. I try to make enough food for a couple meals. Though the idea of this book is a good one, I felt that the author or collector of these recipes didn't do a great job. There's no excuse to not have a well seasoned meal. Healthy raw meals don't need to be bland. I'm thinking I'll just put sticky notes in the book on the recipes that we continue to make and list the changes that were needed.I also want to note that after my husband ate these meals he also would mention, it's not bad but it's missing something. That's the same comment I got after every meal I made from this book. If you are comfortable with spices then I'm sure you'll have no problem spicing these up.

I am not new to the Raw food lifestyle and have been a vegan for well over thirty years. I already prepare my raw dishes, with minor variations, similarly to most of the recipes in this book. The book does not have an index, so if you wish to look up for example "Macadamia nuts" or something else, you would have to page through the book. Also, I think it's rather disappointing to find honey as an ingredient in nearly every recipe. Honey is certainly not vegan since it is obtained from an animal, not to mention the sugar issue that is now the bane of our modern civilization. Any recipe with good food and in particular dried fruit certainly requires no added sugar. Overall it's a lovely book with good photos and particularly for beginners is a nice start.

I love this book! I have just begun getting interested in Raw Foods and most of the books I've come across call for ingredients that are not in my local health-food store, or call for a dehyrator! This book is very user friendly, the photos are beautiful, and the recipes can be made with out a dehydrator or hard-to-find ingredients.I am not a %100 Raw Foodist, but I am trying to incorperate more raw foods into my diet and this book is so easy to use because the recipes are organized largely by mealtime so I can find something quick and easy to put together--NOW! All the recipes are simple and require very few appliances. Also, everything I've tried tastes amazing, even recipes I wasn't too sure about! I never thought I'd like a Papaya Carpaccio because I hadn't really liked papaya in the past, but the dish was SO yummy that I devoured the salad almost entirely myself! There's a recipe for a chocolate mousse made with cocoa powder, avocado, dates, and honey that is amazingly satisfying! And, the cashew-nut-sour cream cheese is simply cravable. These recipes and others take less time to put together than anything cooked. It's also good to know that I can eat something rich or sweet and feel good that all of them are made out of fruit, vegetables, and occasionally a tablespoon or so of a natural sweetener, like honey or agave syrup. The only thing that could be improved is the binding of the book, which looks like it may have the tendancy to un-do since it's a thick paperback.Other than that minor detail--buy this book and welcome to Raw Food Love!

Just looking at the cover of this book evokes the imagination. It immediately calls to mind, C.S. Lewis's The Magician's Nephew, J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and more recently N.D. Wilson's 100 Cupboards. But the book also takes me back. When I was in university as a mature student it seems that every month or two my spiritual director was recommending another book by Peter Kreeft. In fact, when I check I had read 14 books by Kreeft in 4 years. But I was greatly surprised to find out that It had over a decade since I had read one of his works. If his works in the last few years are as excellent as this, I need to add them all to my to be read list. This book was an absolutely wonderful read.Kreeft begins the introduction when addressing how many philosophies of life there are begins with two answers; Answer 1 Three Philosophies of Life, and answer 2 there are only two philosophies. In the first answer the three types are:1. Wonder begins in surprise.2. This second kind of wonder-questioning-is wonder in the intellect, guided by the will (the "will to truth", which is far from automatic).3. Wonder is consummated in contemplative awe.And then he states:"Philosophy not only begins in wonder (#1), it also proceeds by means of wonder (#2) and ends in wonder (#3).This book is about the third kind of wonder."But then he goes on to give a second answer. Again he states:"When you think about it logically, there are two and only two philosophies of life. For either there are or there are not doors in the walls of the world. Either there is Nothing or Something outside Plato's Cave."And from there Kreeft goes on to explain that premise which is the basis for the rest of the book. He declares:"A wall is a limit. A door in a wall is a way of overcoming that limit, a way out of the place confined by the walls. The walls here symbolize the physical universe. The doors symbolize escapes from that limit, "morenesses", transcendences. The point of this book is that there are many doors through the walls of the world, many Jacob's Ladders through the sky."Kreeft then goes on a romp through literature to look at elements of story and elements in stories that breach that wall. The sections in the book are:I. The Plot: Story as LifeII. The Setting: The Fragility of TimeIII. The Characters: The Real Presence of Invisible FriendsIV. The Theme: JoyV. The Style: ArtBut the sections are not weighted equally. In the first section Kreeft gives 10 examples from 10 stories.Story #1: The Colorado Water DropletStory #2: The Bouncing Acorn and the Bouncing SpermStory #3: One Grain of SandStory #4: The True Causes of World War IIIStory #5: The Cheap Egyptian Tailor Who Saved the WorldStory #6: Thornton Wilder's TapestryStory #7: Mark Helprin's Perfect PaintingStory #8: William James' Dystopian UtopiaStory #9: The "Ridiculous" Point of The Brothers KaramazovStory #10: H. G. Wells' "The Door in the Wall"The section on Characters has four chapters, God, angels, Saints and extraterrestrials. Both the sections on Theme and Style have 5 chapters. But the section on Setting is just a single chapter. This book was an incredible read. I could hardly put it down. It has made me reflect more on some of my favorite fiction, and inspired me to add some of them back into my to be read pile along with some of the other books Kreeft drew examples from. This is one of those books I know I will end up reading again. Much like Kreeft's own Between Heaven Hell, which I read every year for several years in a row. Any series fan of fiction will benefit from read this book! And Christian's especially will see the veil pulled back a bit and experience fiction, the world visible and the world invisible in a new way after reading this excellent book!

The Merriam-Webster College Dictionary defines ‘Twilight Zone’ as a world of fantasy, illusion or unreality’. Secular humanists claim that religion is a fantasy, but Christians claim that God and Christianity are real. Materialists claim that only matter exists. Boston College philosopher Peter Kreeft’s new book, Doors in the Walls of the World argues persuasively that there are several clues that an afterlife does in fact exist. Using his imagination and philosophical arguments, Peter Kreeft travels to the end of the universe and looks through those doors.Kreeft starts his book by using the metaphor of the material universe as a wall, and doors in the wall would be paths to the spiritual universe beyond. He offers several arguments in support of theism, as follows:Human consciousness and free will cannot be explained in material terms. That we can know truths about the whole universe is evidence that our minds are above the material universe, since one can’t know an object unless one is outside it.The historical credibility of the Bible, the fact that most people have believed in God, and the history of religion making people happier and nobler all show that history supports belief in God.The physical sciences have shown that the universe is rational and based on mathematical laws, which suggests that whatever created the universe was rational and understood mathematics.Psychology suggests that people need meaning in their lives, and that without God, there is no true meaning and only despair. Yet people intuitively sense that life is meaningful.Religion and philosophy have provided many good reasons to believe that God is real, from Aquinas’s five proofs for the existence of God to the miracles reported by Christianity and other religions.Beauty is a clue to the truth about reality. Our universe is a magnificent and beautiful work of art, and a work of art requires an artist. In a similar vein, Kreeft notes that some philosophers have become theists upon hearing the music of Bach, since such music is so heavenly it could only have come from God. And he also mentions that God made the universe for the delight of mankind. That’s a beautiful thought.Great literature also supports the existence of God, and Kreeft cites Dostoyevsky’s novel The Brothers Karamazov and Thornton Wilder’s novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey as examples of literature that supports belief in a benevolent God.Kreeft states that the story of mankind is a real story, and a story needs an author. He points out that to understand a story, you need more than logic – you also need intuition and appreciation. In addition to presenting convincing arguments that God, heaven and souls are real, this book defines joy as deep, fleeting happiness that fills you with delight, and notes that joy is the true purpose of life, and that permanent, lasting joy exists only in heaven. Kreeft notes that happiness can get boring, since it is the satisfaction of our desires, but at least happiness lasts longer than pleasures, which fade quickly.Another bonus is a brief definition of art as the cultivation of beauty. Real art is good and beautiful and true, and it inspires. With the definition of joy noted above, this book is a joy to read and is itself a door in the wall of the world. This book is clear, concise, compelling, true and beautiful, and you’ll thank God you read it.

I bought this for a birthday gift for one of my sons. Another one looked interested so I bought it for him too. I think I'll get it also for my youngest son, who met Dr. Kreeft several years ago at our state's pro-life conference. Thank you Dr. Kreeft!
