This outlandish though accurate story is judged the "biggest pack of blarney" ever and the sheepish man actually wins the pot of gold. He has learned his lesson, however, and he continues telling truthful tales of the days he spent with the Leprechauns. Rayyan's wispy pastel watercolor illustrations are peopled with Rackhamesque fairies and realistic characters. There is a fine blend of energy, humor, and magic in the Celtic-bordered pictures. It's difficult to beat the King of the Leprechauns at blarney, but champion liar Patrick O'Kelley manages to do it even when he's telling the truth. This should be at the top of the list for St. Patrick's Day stories, but is a delight any time of the year. Children will enjoy poring over the illustrations.

A great Irish tale!

"Patrick O'Kelly was a peddler of scarves and trinkets, with a habit of telling magnificent lies." So begins "The Ring of Truth". "Magnificent" may even be an understatement for him. He is supposed to have kissed the Blarney Stone once, that fabled and mystical rock that gives one the gift of gab, and by the way he carries on, it's believed that he managed to get a bit of that rock stuck in his teeth! He is such a fine artist of Blarney, that he easily boasts that he could out-fib the very king of the Leprechauns himself!!Well, as any good Irish legend will tell you, be careful about what you say about the Fair Folk, for they have great ears for hearing and egos to boot!! It's hardly long before Patrick O'Kelly is swept off to the very land of the Faeries to meet the king of the leprechauns himself!Like any fine Celtic tale, the book is full of twists and turns and play on words, of which the title of the book is just one (I'll not give away the ending for fear of spoiling the fun for readers!). The ending is a fun surprise for readers, as well as for our brave hero, Patrick O'K. Himself! What will stick to readers' ribs most, however, are the illustrations.Illustrated by Omar Rayyan, the book resembles now an illuminated manuscript, now a surrealistic painting. Faeries and other Fair Folk are mischievous creatures, to say the least, and to step into their world, however briefly, is to take a roller coaster ride into the ethereal and strange. Winged sprites flit too and fro, and the King has always about him a smile that is first playful and fun, and upon closer inspection, hinting at some darker purpose. Once Patrick has gone to their fair land, they are all about him, hiding here and there, yet the reader knows that they are invisible to everyone-another example of that mischievous, almost sinister magic they weave.All in all, a tremendous book and perhaps too overlooked in the children's section. Though Irish in nature, it is not about St. Patrick's day, so there is no need to keep it mothballed until then! Bring out this treasure of a story and illustration and read it often!!

This may be my favorite leprechaun story ever! Peddler and blarney teller extraordinaire Patrick O’Kelly's boastful clams of being the best teller of tales has made their way to the King of the Leprechauns; and he is not amused. Everyone knows, or should know, that Leprechauns are the best bards of the land. The king tricks O’Kelly into accepting a gift that will forever change his storytelling ways. The Ring of Truth is a fantastically illustrated and entertaining story, perfect for a read aloud on Saint Patrick’s Day or any day.

I ordered 5 different study guides for Mark and worked the first lesson in each one. I chose this one over all the others. Our group is now on lesson 15 and for the most part find the guide very useful. There are some lessons that are a bit thin, but overall the lessons take 45 minutes to an hour depending on the discussion. There is a leader's guide included in the back which I've found to be useful. We did get several books that were misprinted and had to be returned.

A good study guide. Easy to follow. A great learning tool.

All of these Life Guide books I have read are goo.

Great for house fellowship use or small bible study group.

I really enjoyed this study of Mark. It's a well thought-out study guide and asks you questions that make you think and infer, instead of simply asking you to regurgitate the passage.

My son and I love the Hollywood 101 series! Not only are these books filled with terrific scenes for kids to learn and hone the craft of acting, they also include a ton of practical information for parents, too. For instance, I used to always tell my son to go practice in the mirror--I know now that this was the wrong advice. Buy The Ultimate Commercial Book to learn why. But what I like most about the Hollywood 101 books is how thoroughly encouraging they are. In a business rife with rejection, and often dejection, Chambers Stevens is positively optimistic--yet realistic, too. He calls for hard work, solicits confidence, and makes it all fun in the process. After all, what's more fun for kids than acting out!

Disappointed. I found very little that I wanted to use with the teens/preteens I teach. Lots of material that I found objectionable for that age.

These are "original", cliche skits, not scenes. Rudimentary, simple, not from full length plays. Stick to the classics. Some of the skits have good conflict, but most are short and not very challenging for young actors.

This is not an easy read for middle school students.

I'm very happy with this collection. I've ordered some more scripts.

I really question the high rating this book gets. Its contents are trite and useless. Nearly every scene in the book has the tone of a piece of work thrown together in minutes with worn out cliches. My students often create better scenes in one class period. This book should be offered for free.

I purchase this book to help my daughter with auditions. Auditions frequently ask that a monologue be memorized and prepared prior to arrival. Little did I know when purchasing this book that my daughter would be auditioning in front of the author himself! Chambers is very knowledgeable about acting and auditioning. He is a great acting coach and directs the kids in a fun way.The book also helped her practice her acting skills and gave her direction to improve. Anyone wanting to get into acting would benefit from purchasing Chambers' Stevens books.

Wow! I couldn't WAIT to get this title from Roxanne O'Brien, and pre-ordered it immediately. My expectations were more than fulfilled when the book arrived and I found it full of detailed explanations of all the necessary supplies and tools, as well as chock full of projects to start off with. I enjoyed O'Brien's upbeat, encouraging writing style, as well.Since I already had a dapping block and some metal stamps, all I needed was gray gesso and a little copper sheeting to make the pendant featured on the cover. IT WAS SO FUN TO DO! :D I am already sketching out designs for another, and there's a bracelet I want to make, too. My mind is already dreaming up seasonal projects for Autumn and the Winter season. This is a REALLY good book for getting the old noodle to sprout ideas!If you've always loved the LOOK of enamel, but don't have access to a high-temp kiln, live in a walk-up without a balcony, or have small children or pets and don't want to operate a blowtorch inside, this book opens the door to a fabulous technique to allow amateur jewellers to add the beauty and detail of colorful enamel, but without the attendant risk of setting the house on fire (or accidentally sending Fluffy to an early grave)! DEFINITELY TWO THUMBS UP! :D

I was so excited to receive this book today! Weighing in at 88 pages and eight projects, it might seem to be on the slight side, but there is a LOT packed into these pages and your imagination is truly limitless!First, each and every photograph of pieces shown in the book, whether an example or a project or even just tools, is excellent. Call me silly, but I particularly like seeing photos of the author's actual tools and supplies, as it makes the pieces seem more real and more accessible.Second, I've never seen or heard of colored pencil on copper before, and apparently (as of this date), only Prismacolor Premier colored pencils will do the job. That's great, because I actually own these, and if you don't, you can find them virtually anywhere, from Walmart to craft stores to art supply centers. The author recommends the 12-pack of pencils to start with, but hey -- I'm a color-lover so I linked you to the larger pack, and they're quite affordable!If you aren't already familiar with working with sheet metal, you can find other books on the subject as well as online and YouTube tutorials for everything you need to know -- the basics of cutting metal, punching holes, riveting, and even sawing metal. If sawing sounds like too many blades being broken, never fear -- stores like Beaducation have pre-cut metal pieces in all shapes, sizes, thicknesses, and metal types. They also have a zillion metal stamps and various types of dapping tools which are used in some of the projects.Don't get worried when you reach the page about hydraulic presses and silhouette dies made of acrylic sheet -- Roxan O'Brien offers alternatives to the hydraulic press and dies. These tools and materials are for the more advanced jewelry designer. She spends six pages on the press, and I feel that, while not entirely necessary for the book (and a possible turn-off for the crafter flipping through who happens to land on those pages), it's good to know what the next step could be in making this truly your OWN design and your OWN creative process. If you're lucky, you'll have a grandfather or uncle or husband who has a garage full of tools, and they just might be hiding a hydraulic press in there behind the decrepit old Mustang they've been remodeling for 45 years!Another aspect of the book appeals to my OCD and list-making tendencies -- each of the eight (8) projects has a list of supplies needed and a check box to literally check as you go. Small detail, but one I love.The projects start on page 25, and Roxan doesn't hold back. The previous 24 pages about tools and patinas and dapping blocks were all necessary and sufficient to get you going immediately. One item that isn't in the supply list that is most necessary is patience. You are literally drawing a work of art, and don't rush your work (I speak from sad, sad experience). If you get confused, never fear -- page 32 has a wonderful troubleshooting list. How many times have I wished other books had this feature? And oh, she knows those of us who can't help but rush through a book and start right away! She includes a Cheat Sheet so if we didn't read and properly digest all the directions, we can get a quick look at the process and decide before we're halfway committed to the project if this is a piece we can confidently complete.Bottom line -- even if you never complete a single one of O'Brien's projects, she has given you loads of ideas to create your own pieces, from the simple to complex. If she shows a project with a dapped piece, you can make it flat instead. If she chooses to rivet pieces of metal together, you can use wire work to connect the pieces. If your drawing isn't what you wish it were, lines and color are what many an artist made their bread and butter on. And think of this -- if you have a friend who's a whiz at art but has no desire to work with metal or fiddly jewelry bits, why not do collaborative pieces, where one provides the art and ond provides the metal know-how and decoration?Pages 64-87 cover patina. Some people love the idea of changing the color of the metal instead of their own art. Put aside the colored pencils (or consider layering an art side with a backing that's been patinaed) and go through six (6) different ways to patina metal so it has an aged or rustic look.I sound like I'm gushing, and I suppose I am, because I've been making jewelry for ten years and I've seen many things get introduced to the design scene, and suddenly everyone's work looks like everyone else's. By using your own art, your own idea of where to use metal stamps, texturing, patinaing, riveting -- all or just one -- you have a book that is calling upon YOUR inner muse to create, not simply copy the author. To me, a great crafting how-to book is one that gives me basic projects that give me pleasure and satisfaction of a job well done while giving me a clear runway to take off, spread my wings, put the book aside, and translate my ideas into my own creations -- thanks to Roxan O'Brien's excellent tutelage.Buy this book if you're bored with current trends. Buy this book if you love metal but are stuck on what to do next. Buy this book if you love to draws but never quite knew how to translate that into jewelry that doesn't take months to complete. However, I have found Roxan's core technique to be frustrating and ineffective (for me).The crux of my issue with Roxan's technique--shape/drill, sand the copper to give it a bit of tooth, cover with Gesso, color with pencils, blend with turpentine, seal--is the use of sanding and Gesso to create the surface to adhere the color to the copper. I found that the culprit was the smooth surface, the lack of 'tooth' in the substrate in which to adhere the pencil.I decided to look further, and found Mary Karg's book, Layered Colored Pencil Jewelry: A Step-by-Step Exploration of Colored Pencil on Copper. While Karg's book seems to be self-published, I found her book to have a much better technique--shape, drill for layering, roughen using a tungsten-carbide Dremel bit, patina, color, blend, layer, seal. The mix of the rough surface and the Patina made coloring infinitely easier. Additionally, the instruction on creating layered pendants was good, and I found her projects to be much more artistically appealing. I found most of O'Brien's projects to be 'crafty' rather than artistic.If I had to do it all over again, I'd skip this book and go straight to Mary Karg's.

Although the title would suggest the focus of the book is on using colored pencils on copper, one-third of the book talks about other coloring techniques. Most of the other techniques can be found in several places. I have not painted and not used acrylic paints but the author says the technique is similar to water colors. The author sprays acrylic over the final design but then talks about protecting the metal. So what was the acrylic for. I finally figured it out but it should be evident by the writing. I would like more detail on hints on actually using colored pencils--not tools, not metal working, not patinas. Seemed to have a little dab of a lot of things.

Some of the instructions aren't terribly clear. Took me a while to figure out why it seemed a step was missing in a couple of projects. Have several years of metalsmithing experience. Looking forward to exploring this new technique.

Lesson learned: read an excerpt before purchasing. The main idea for this book was intriguing, but the style it is written in undermines the story. The WHOLE narrative is written as interviews and excerpts from reports. When I started reading it I hoped it would give away to a more normal writing style; it didn't. As a result, the interview-narrative style makes the story feel claustrophobic by focusing on a handful of characters. The scope of the event - finding an alien artifact - would have (and is implied) global impact, but the reader never gets that scope or sense of scale. The characters are more interested in their personal, sexual, and emotional lives and the resulting drama than the alien artifact and its consequences, making the book seem shallow and a bit like a soap opera. Mysterious characters are not explained or developed, which just made them distracting. I finished the book, but won't be reading the sequel; it is written again in the same excerpt fashion.

I wanted to read something fun and light that would also keep my total interest. Too often, I read books where the writing is not enough to pull me in and I am easily distracted from the story. This was the perfect antidote. I had a great time reading this novel, and while it's not a literary sensation, it's fabulous entertainment and I can totally see how it could translate well into a movie.The basic premise is the accidental discovery by a little girl of a gigantic sculpted hand made of unknown metals and housed in panels inscribed with strange symbols. No one knows what it is, except that it's thousands of years old and defies anything discovered in human history to date. The little girl grows up to become the scientist who studies it and discovers it's only a piece of a whole--representing a giant metal statue or robot, with its various components scattered throughout the world. So begins a secret hunt to find the pieces, assemble them, and figure out what the heck this thing is, how it got here, and what it's meant for.If you like sci-fi and action, this should be at the top of your list. If you dislike "documented interview" or "journal entry" narratives, this may not be for you. I know a lot of people express frustration with this style of writing as being distracting or confusing, and if not well done, it certainly can be. However, I think Sleeping Giants does a great job of keeping the characters straight (mostly by telling you at the top of each chapter who the interview is with), and I think the voices of the characters and the dialogue do a great job of filling in the details of the story. I prefer lots of dialogue in an action story, anyway...reading pages and pages of detail on a supposed action sequence will lose my interest quickly.Overall, this is a fun read with an interesting plot, so I'm giving 5 stars for its entertainment value and how much I enjoyed it. And I'll definitely be reading the sequel.

I had this book on my wish list for several months before finally deleting it. Something just didn't seem compelling about the summary on the back. Then I kept reading about how good it was and that it was optioned for a movie. I decided to go ahead and give it a shot. When I bought it I didn't know it was going to be in the interview style like World War Z was done in. This is a genre that I do not enjoy. I feel like I'm missing a lot of character building and that certainly was the case with Sleeping Giants. It was very frustrating to not know what was going through the mind of the Army helicopter pilot who drove his truck into one of the others working on the project. Seeing that play out through the interviews of others was very unfulfilling.This book also caused me to break out of my "suspension of disbelief". As a lifelong scifi fan I'm fully capable of immersing myself into high concept futuristic novels and accepting that, duhh, what is happening in the book isn't really possible. In Sleeping Giants we're presented with a couple of episodes where American military forces challenge Russian autonomy without repercussion. In the first, a military unit goes into a Russian territory to retrieve an alien artifact. There are no consequences to this even after two Russian soldiers are shot and killed. In another, American submarines have a showdown with two Russian subs over an alien artifact on the bottom of the ocean. One of the main characters causes an event that literally obliterates one of the Russian subs, but there are no consequences. These kinds of things just would not happen without provoking a strong response from a foreign power and this really pulled me out of the story as I was pondered with exasperation how this could be possible.It's hard not to see how the author had so much trouble getting this book published in the first place. I was unable to get through the book and ultimately put it down 2/3's of the way through.

I guess I cared enough about what would happen to actually finish the book. But, it was touch and go at times. The style of the book was a series of interviews conducted by the same nameless person who seemed to have more influence than he, at first, let on. At first the style was interesting, but it got old fairly fast. In fact, it seemed implausible that some of the interviews would have been recorded at all, such as the one with the leg surgeon (I won't give away what it is was about). There weren't very many plot surprises as the story progressed.But, to be fair, the book was not all bad. The development of some of the characters was good (including the nameless interviewer). It raised some interesting issues about how we make decisions. Perhaps the author's next book will be better.

The idea behind this book is fantastic. I just feel like it's not being executed very well. There are tons of awesome opportunities for action or scenarios where the author could really build up an amazing description but it all just falls flat and takes a back seat to a silly love story. I really hope that the second book does not continue down the same path.

Beautiful place, that I have seen and loved, but this is a great history of golf in Pebble Beach and the wonderful Monterey Peninsula , Great photos from the area's history, new colorful shots, detailed records and photos of all the great championships played in the area-- Great names from Bing, Babe, Clint, are all included in the story-- but like great places in our lives, somebody sometime had the imagination and fortitude to create what we love today, read their story-- Great book. Having read all of Col. Taylor's Pike Logan books, I'm in a good position to compare this latest effort to the others. It's easily one of his best, perhaps the best. All of his books are packed with action, but this one more so than any of the others. He manages to maintain several storylines on a parallel track and all of them converge smoothly at the end.The main characters are reasonably well fleshed out, particularly if you read some of his previous novels, because you will be familiar with these characters. But this novel has many more characters than previous ones. So, some of the lesser characters are somewhat blank. But it's not something that will annoy the reader. The action will keep you turning pages.If I were to find fault with anything in this fine work, it would be the overwhelming use of acronyms. If you have a background in military-speak, it shouldn't be a problem. However, I'm guessing that most of his readers don't have that background, and struggle in places with the multitude of acronyms.

This is another exceptional 'Pike Logan' story from Brad Taylor. While I am somewhat prejudice,hsving read all of the books and short stories by Brad Taylor, his novel 'Operator Down' did not disappoint. This 'Pike Logan' thriller picks up only a couple of months after the end of Taylor's latest short story 'The Infiltrator' where Aaron and Shoshana get married. Now Aaron is on a non-Mossad mission to South Africa for the Diamond Exchange. Brad Taylor works Pike and Jennifer into a mission tracking an American arms dealer in Tel Aviv where they attempt a social (lunch) meeting with Shoshana. This leads to a rather interesting encounter where Pike and Jennifer help break up an attempt at killing Shoshana but she is suspicious that Pike is somehow involved in setting her up. I particularly enjoyed the setting within Lesotho with the comparison to the Italian microstate of San Marino. Taylor puts together a number of credible threats that are woven into the Taskforce's mission through a little manipulation by Curt Hale. I gavethis book five stars and highly recommend it.

This is likely the best Pike Logan novel of the series. It highlights all the characters and gives each plenty of print space. It reads at a breakneck speed. The majority of the novel takes place in South Africa and even if you know nothing of the area, Brad Taylor's descriptions are so vivid you can easily visualize the area. There are multiple plots and subplots to maintain your interest chapter after chapter. Taylor brings every single character to life in the most realistic of styles. If you enjoyed the other Pike Logan books, you will love this one.

I have read all of the Pike Logan books and think that Brad Taylor improves his writing and humorous language in every book. Pike and Jennifer lead the Task Force to South Africa to stop a weapons sale and to rescue Israeli friend, Aaron, before his wife Shoshana destroys the Task Force mission in her anger. As usual, Pike must balance the Task Force mission with his own humanitarian goal. The Task Force succeeds in helping a South African hero thwart a totalitarian coup without disclosing their presence.

Another fun and exciting adventure for Pike and his team. Really enjoyed the setting of this story, it's one that hasn't been used mush in thrillers lately. Seeing characters brought back that I really didn't expect was a plus, as was the intertwining of Pike's team, Aaron and Shoshana.The Pike Logan books have gotten better as each book has come out. This one I finished in a few hours as I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. And that really bums me out because now I have to wait even longer for the next book.

Sorry but not into this style of writing. Didn't feel a connection to any of the character... Some felt more like cartoon characters (Shoshanna). Difficult to follow storyline with many characters being involved and when switching from one character's storyline to another... was not smooth. Way too much detail when it wasn't needed. There has only been two other books I've given up on, can now make that three.

As always another hard to put down. Loved the different start and development of the story. Pike and Koko kept flow of the action moving as always but the crazy Lady continued to fast forward the story and throw in continued surprises as she tries drive Pike off the deep end. Looking forward to forward to forward to the next book.

Captain Taylor has begun to come into his own as a writer. Yes his previous efforts were exciting. Yes, they were accurate portrayals of the kind and caliber of people who operate on behalf of the greatest of all nations. And yes, he knows from first hand experience the tools and techniques of the special forces operators. But now he's obviously growing up as a writer and it shows. His observations and characterizations now flow onto the page.
