My daughter brought this book home as a part of her course work and she came to me for help. After reading this by myself and talking it over with my daughter, I can safely say this is truly a worthy read, especially in today's climate. The thing that points to the excellence of this book is the fact my 10 yr old daughter loved it and actively came to me to discuss. She had questions on the relationship between Esperanza and Miguel. She expressed to me the sadness she felt in the losses Esperanza had. My baby talked with me! This was wonderful.

I bought this book as Kindle+Audible (Whispersync), but ended up mostly listening to the audio, as I found the narration by Trini Alvarado excellent, and adding a lot to the atmosphere, with pronunciation of Spanish names etc with the right accent. The main character and narrator, Esperanza, is the spoiled daughter of a rich ranchowner in Mexico. The family’s situation changes when Esperanza’s father dies; and her mother Ramona, rather than marrying a man she does not want, decides to flee with her daughter to the United States. This is during the time of the Great Depression, and they end up in a poor Mexican labour camp in California. Esperanza has a hard time adjusting to the hardships of their new life – very different from what she’s been used to so far. But gradually, she learns to cope with the challenges. The story is based on / inspired by the life of the author’s own grandmother, also called Esperanza (Spanish for “hope”). The author has also cleverly incorporated the rhythm of the various harvest seasons into the story. I really liked the book, and I think it gives “food for thought” for our own time as well, concerning how we treat the present migration situation (not only in the US but the rest of the world as well).

this book has been amazing to read, i found myself on the verge of tears at times just imagining a young girl going through harsh struggles in life like Esperanza after only knowing a pampered life. the story is captivating to say the least. the way it's written is great for kids that have an expanded vocabulary, 4 years and up according to the description product detail seems a bit young. it's perfect for older kids about 8 years and up, teens and even adults like myself that LOVE reading award winning kid's books so that I can buy or recommend for family and friends.

This book opens a window into a different time era, culture, and way of life. Esperanza is used to living as a queen on her family’s ranch in Aguascalientes, Mexico. She has a loving family, and wealth beyond imagine to provide her with silk dresses, dolls and servants. However, everything changes when Esperanza’s dad is killed by bandits a day before her 13th birthday. Unable to own the ranch without her father, and the overwhelming pressure from her uncle’s desire to marry Esperanza’s mother, they decide to move to a migrant camp in California.Everything has changed for Esperanza once she arrives to America. She no longer has servants, wealth or her grandma to keep her comfort. She must rise above all these changes in order to survive. She has to learn how to work and provide for her family, while still grieving her father’s death. When her mother becomes sick from a dust storm and gets worse due to depression, Esperanza has to work even harder. She goes from not knowing how to sweep to being a productive worker like everyone else. Esperanza proves herself to the others when she works without complaining and attempts to save her earning to bring her grandmother to California with them. While this is all happening other works are trying to form a workers union and strike so they can earn higher wages and better living conditions. This adds some drama and conflict while also giving an insight into the workers lives.Esperanza does not only learn how to be a great worker but also realizes she can be happy without having silk dresses or servants. She really progresses with having a better attitude in working hard and staying strong through trials. She is able to see other’s perspectives and can have empathy for them. Although at times I would become frustrated because she would act selfish or like a spoiled brat. It was hard to read through at times because I desired for her to reach the point that she grew up and realized she can’t have her old life back. This books also touches on more important issues such as the Dust Bowl, Mexican Deportation Act, and the discrimination foreigners receive. It also shows the perspective of immigrant workers and how they struggle to even just put food on the table. I really enjoyed this book because Esperanza really does grow up and learn how to be responsible. It also would be great to incorporate into a classroom. I would think either a first or second year of Spanish would be an appropriate level for this book. It would be an easy book to introduce some Spanish vocabulary and talk about the culture of Mexico. I would break this book up by chapters and have them students write down the Spanish words as they read the book and make any notes about the Mexican culture or immigration. I would also want to talk about the historical events that took place during the time this story is taking place. I could co-plan with the history teacher to see if while they learn about the Great Depression in history they could read a real example in my class.

This book is required reading for my granddaughter who is entering middle school in Florida. The subject crosses many borders and many themes. It presents real problems in complex ways,so that you can see all sides of the question. There are many questions still unanswered in our society. It is a book that is hopeful and realistic. I really enjoyed it with her.

Mind-blowing work. Seriously. I read "Turing's Cathedral" first and expected this 15 year earlier work by George Dyson to be of lesser quality. I was thoroughly surprised with his treatment of the subject, especially in the late 1990's. To be fair, they are very different books written with different intent. "Turing's Cathedral" is a very thorough historical account of the IAS, Manhattan Project, and all the work involving early von Neumann machines. It was entertaining and thought-provoking, but ultimately a retrospective as a true historical account. "Darwin Among the Machines" is a forward-thinking work, and a terrific one at that. It begins slow as it gives all the necessary background material in the same manner as James Gleick's "The Information." Having already read "The Information" and other similar works chronicling the development of modern information theory, I was resolved to rate this 3/5 stars and behind Gleick's book (though to be fair it predates "The Information" by over 10 years). However, it really opens up around Chapter 9 (Game Theory) and boldly goes where no other book on evolution and/or information theory has gone before or since - tackling intelligence (natural, artificial, and invisible), economics, evolution, and technology in a master stroke. The last 1/3 of the book is simply inspiring in its concepts, and you realize that the longer first part of "known" background material is really there to set up the real topic at hand. It is the better of Dyson's two major books and ironically the more modern one (by far). I consider it as profound as Richard Dawkin's "The Selfish Gene" in turning an old subject completely around on its head. Well done!

This book is a great collection of history around the evolution of computers and artificial life. It reminds me of the 1970s BBC-produced "Connections" series that aired on PBS years ago. The show illustrated how modern inventions had their roots in centuries-old technology, and traced their path from the early inventions through various iterations up to the modern solution. Each chapter takes a single topic and starts back in time when it was the germ of an idea in someone's writings and carries it forward into the 1990's. This is not a technical book nor a book about computer science. It is more about the field of artificial life or perhaps artificial intelligence and brings the threads of evolution, encoding, hardware, software, networking, and other topics under a common theme. I picked it up because of a recent interest in the work of Nils A. Barricelli and was not disappointed in this regarded. I understand the other reviewers that were disappointed in the lack of technical detail, though I really don't think this is the aim of the book.My one complaint is that Dyson does get his details wrong at times. For example, when discussing Ray's Tierra system he implies that all digital creatures were 80 instructions long, which is not true. This makes me wonder what other details he may have off as well. I read the book as more of a broad swath of history, in which the flow of time and growth of the idea is the focus and theme. The book is extremely well notated and has sparked my interest to look up the original works behind a few areas of discussion. Like many writer's in the 1990s, Dyson expected big results in artificial life over the coming years which did not come to pass. However, as a comprehensive history of the fields behind Alife this is well worth a visit.

Since Dyson likes metaphors and analogies, I guess I will use one or two for my review. Reading the book was like eating a plate of spaghetti and meatballs: pasta for carb loading, meatballs for substance, and sauce for spicing things up. With a green salad thrown in, it would have made a tasty meal with more value. Translating my analogy, the spaghetti was the many stories told from the history of information technology, squirming around on the plate. The meatballs were the themes, compact and separate, and the sauce was the literary references. The structure of the book was much more like the flowing of a river than the design of a building. In the end, the river seems to flow into the ocean; seep into the ground; and evaporate into the air. It is up to the reader to draw off some of the water to put to work. My review may suffer from the same weaknesses, so be sure to read others. I don't like it when others based their ratings on media, but have to say that the print was too small.

Someone I admire reccomended me this book. The author does a good job on explaining why he thinks that machines will become intelligent beings, by making analogies between evolution and how technology has improved over time. However, be prepared to see the name of many philosophers and many important names tat you may not know. The author makes some assumptions about the target audience, in which I have to say, not everyone will enjoy this book, since it can become a difficult reading.

Another good read on the origins of modern computer science. Some interesting stories of Babbage, Hollerith and Van Neumann. I particularly enjoyed Babbage's human computers.A great read while kicking back at the beach.

Item arrive on time

An intellectual tour de force from a rare and extremely valuable perspective. Dyson is brilliant and his brilliance shines through every page of Darwin Among the Machines.

A nice intro to Butlerian perspective.

If you like white wolf....mmmm...how about I phrase it like this...If you like 'OLD world' White Wolf, this is a must have. This clan book tells a great deal of clan history as well as tidbits ofCanite history that are from a non Camrilla / non western angle. My game group prefers the older version of the Assamites...(blood curse, titheing your sire, honor...) and within that breadth, this is a great clan book. If you prefer the new version of assamites within old world, that you want the other clan book. Niether is the wrong answer. you just have to decide, what do you want our of your game / assamites. The only thing I wish it had was better Merits / Flaws.

You have to have this to complete any clan book collections Some surprising stuff that's for sure!

I really needed this.

Excellent condition and good read

It does a wonderful job of explaining The Clan Assamite

Very fast delivery and was just as described.

The Assamites, a clan of assassins hailing from Persia and Arabia, have long been characterized by negative stereotypes in the World of Darkness gamelines. The first edition clan book was filled with offensive remarks and stereotypes about Islamic culture and the Middle East. Clayton Oliver's revision of the clan was a very welcome change from all of that. The Assamites are detailed as being more or less like any other clan. The first chapter opens with telling us everything that we have been told about the clan is a lie, created in part by the western clans, and in part by the Assamites need to remain secret. We are given an extensive history of the Assamite's role in Middle Eastern history, from ancient Mesopotamia, Persia, Babylon, Carthage, Greece and Assyria to Byzantine era. Great detail is given to the Crusades, the back story being that the Crusades shattered the Assamite's relation to the west. From then on, we get some brief views of Assamite activities during the Ottoman Empire, the British invasion of India, the formation of the Arab States, and finally the modern era.The next chapter goes into detail concerning the Assamite's social structre. The main body of the clan, following an ancient Mesopotamian God-King Ur-Shulgi, is given great detail. With social ranks going from the Du'at (three leaders of the clan) to the Silsila (elder priest types) to the Fida'i (initiates to the clan). We also learn that there are three Assamite castes. The main caste, the warriors, are not the assassins that are always presented as Assamites. Indeed, the warriors were once judges and law enforcers, but slowly changed to warriors over time. And not all, or even most, are assassins. Indeed, they are body gaurds, soldiers, straegists, communications experts, technicians, smugglers, martial artists and bedouin lords. There are also two other castes. The sorcerers are blood magicians, drawing from ancient Hebrew, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Arabian, Persian and Indian magics. They are just as potent and deadly as the Tremere. The other caste are Viziers, the scholars and artisans of the clan. Not only are they record keepers, scholars and historians, but also scientists, linguists, religious experts, artists, jewellers, calligraphers, storytellers, legal expets, journaliss, Bollywood producers, politicians and so forth. Each gets a write up, complete with advantages, weaknesses, clan disciplines and bloodlines, and even specific ranks and offices. We are then presented with the Laws of Haqim, which unit the Assamite clan and guide them towards their goals. Political factions, from the loyalists, to those who want to break with the clan, to the Sabbat and Camarilla members, to those who follow other paths (like the Israeli Leopards of Zion, all female Furies of Erinyes and the elite hashashyin of the Web of Knives) are explored. We are also treated with steroetypes about the "foreign" clans and other creatures of the night. The chapter closes out with some details on unique Assamite disciplines and merits and flaws. Not only do we get unique multi-discipline powers, but also higher level Quietus powers, unique Celerity and Obfuscate powers, a vizier-specific Auspex power and the all new Assamite sorcery disicpline which draws on Mesopotamian and Persian blood magics. And of course, the book closes out with nine ready made Assamite templates (three for each caste, and one for each faction), several signature characters (some with stats) and an Assamite specific character sheet. Some of the more interesting templates included the archaeologist, character assassin, prophet of caine and witch-hunter (cool). Naturally, the signature characters included Fatima al-Faqadi (the Assamite signature character), but it also includes some really neat ones like Mata Hari (THE Mata Hari), Janni (an Israeli Assamite), Tegyrius (leader of the Schism who once rode with Alexander the Great) and Nar-Sheptha (a Babylonian sorceress bound into a series of CD-ROMS filled with magic lore), amongst others. All in all, I think this book has been extremley useful for the vampire setting, getting rid of some extremely offensive and prejudiced views from earlier editions and making vampire games fit better into a Middle Eastern setting. If you want to be able to play an Assamite with any depth, this book is a much needed supplement. Easily the best of the Clan books.

The new CLANBOOK ASSAMITE offers a wealth of information about this often misunderstood clan, challenging many long standing assumptions. It backs off things (like the duty to destroy other vampires) that made Assamites difficult to play with non-Assamite characters. Changes from the original CLANBOOK ASSAMITE include expanded roles for female and non-Middle Eastern Assamites. The Assamite belief that they may judge (and punish) other vampires receives a noble explanation here along with the Laws of Haqim which codify such duties. The ranks and factions of Assamite society are examined (antitribu included). The three basic Assamite castes (warrior, scholar and sorcerer) receive full treatment as sub-classes with their own discipline specialties etc. The book describes the ramifications of the Schism between Ur-Shulgi's followers and those of Al-Ashrad. The features are great: MET statistics, notable Assamites, character templates, discussion of clan disciplines, new discipline variations including an Assamite Sorcery path. Now the bad news: IMO this is the hardest book in the new CLANBOOK series so far. It constantly assumes prior knowledge. For example, a summary of the Schism and explanations of terms like "Web of Knives" and "dispossessed" are only provided toward the end although they are mentioned throughout the book as if they're already familiar. Unexplained, specialized terms ("kalif") sometimes appear. (The original CLANBOOK ASSAMITE had a glossary at the beginning- an unfortunate omission here.) Ur-Shulgi and Al-Ashrad, meanwhile, are omitted from the notable Assamite section- despite mention throughout the book and despite the fact that an update of the character profiles in CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT was needed in light of the Schism. (You'd need familiarity with other books to recognize the picture of them on pg. 30.) Less scattered discussion of issues related to the Path of Blood (outlined in VtM's basic rules) would have been helpful. Some advice if this book overwhelms you: There's a shorter, more concise, (clearer) treatment of many of the main points in LIBELLUS SANGUINIS III: WOLVES AT THE DOOR (for VAMPIRE: DARK AGES) as well as an Assamite Sorcery path. (The new CLANBOOK ASSAMITE seems to be a needed update of that material for a modern setting.) There's background on the characters of Ur-Shulgi and Al-Ashrad in CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT but little about their roles in the Schism. NIGHTS OF PROPHECY has a good summary of the Schism (including Ur-Shulgi and Al-Ashrad) and other recent Assamite developments. BLOOD MAGIC: SECRETS OF THAUMATURGY has more paths for Assamite sorcery. Material about Islam and vampire characters in Muslim settings is provided in WORLD OF DARKNESS: SECOND EDITION (chapter on Arabia) and in the V:DA supplement JERUSALEM BY NIGHT . The original CLANBOOK: ASSAMITE also has a list of selected reading on the Middle East.Don't get me wrong. I recommend this book highly. It changed the way I viewed this clan. (I used to HATE Assamites, actually.) It's essential for Assamite character players and for Storytellers. It may take extra effort for those new to VtM but it's worth it.
