Review

"Matt's commentary may be the most significant and comprehensive line-by-line exegesis of the Zohar to ever appear, given its fusion of wisdom gained from the older religious commentaries and the fruits of modern critical scholarship." (Eitan P. Fishbane Jewish Review of Books)"[T]his is a very serious translation of the Zohar holy, an elaboration that took years of work and research on the part of Daniel C. Matt and his team of several scholars who have spared no effort to give the greatest number information of each passuk, each parashah, bringing reliable sources . . . This fantastic edition of The Zohar not only presents an accurate translation of the text, but also an interpretation with insights, more accessible . . . Brilliant expositions on complex subjects rendered easy by Daniel C. Matt, his wonderful ability to transmit profound ideas is amazing." (Gilson Sasson Journal Mitzvah)"Matt provides invaluable commentary to put the Zohar into context and explain the almost disconnected paragraphs." (Daniel D. Stuhlman Association of Jewish Libraries)

Daniel C. Matt has done for the student of ancient literatures what I wish all orientalists could do with their translations - create out of the ashes of history a readable, easily referenced edition of the Zohar. Though other translations and editions exist of value, none have done for the modern scholar and student of the Torah and Zohar, what this work has done. To be more specific, the compendious note are as valuable as the translation itself! And a must for a well rounded syntopic investigation of this work and its relationship to the Torah and other Talmudic and Sage teachings. Again, I bow politely to Dr. Matt. Excellent work and most welcome to student or mere bibliophile. P.S. Being able to have access to the actual reconstructed Aramaic text is without question most welcome. If you are only now learning of this set of the Zohar - collect the previous yet while ye may!!! - MCH

Reading the Zohar has made my life so different. I have been given so many revelations to my asked questions. Long before I found the Zohar, the Almighty sent me a message that I did not understand. After reading volumes 1-5 and 8 (I skipped six and seven due to monetary problems) I now have the understanding of Almighty God's message. The Zohar is a living guiding light for seekers of the Truth. Because money is an issue, I have not been able to purchase every available Zohar, but I "know" that money will no longer be an issue and I will have the entire collection before the end of the year, I call on the "Book of Genesis" to witness and grant this testimony!

The Zohar is the pre-eminent work of what most people refer to as Kabbalah. Far too often people who are interested in Kabbalah are given some new age crap filled with Neo-Platonic or worse dribble. There are far too many people who publish and hold themselves out as a scholar or "practitioners" of Kabbalah, who are nothing more than charlatans. The Zohar is the real thing and it is the basis of mystical Judaism. The Zohar contains a discussion of the nature of G-d, the origin and structure of the universe, the nature of souls, redemption, the relationship of G-d and man. For those affected by Rabbi Cooper's position of G-d as a verb, the Zohar reinforces the idea of the spiritual journey as the most significant aspect of Kabballah. The practice of Tikkun olam, humanity's shared responsibility to heal, repair and transform the world, flows from [at least according some scholars] the ideas expressed in the Zohar of how it is through the striving of humanity to obtain moral perfection through unity with G-d as expressed by the practice of virtue and by moral perfection, man may increase the outpouring of heavenly grace. Thus we as humans, participate in the redemption of the world through our virtuous actions. This translation will help those who wish to understand the basic concepts of Kabbalah but I caution folks who buy and read these volumes, that it is not easy to wrap one's head around these concepts. Too often people will read and reinterpret what they read in terms of prior experience and cultural identity. It is important you find a reputable scholar or rabbi who will assist you in placing the concepts you read about here in the proper internal context [how they fit together in this work] as well as the external context, [how they fit into the body of Jewish religious thought they are derived from]. One need not be a Jew to read and study these volumes. In fact I encourage anyone who wishes to embark on the study of the Zohar as regardless of your own spiritual path, your experience will be enriched by exposure to the principles found here.

Very heavy reading but well referenced. You will need a knowledgable Hebrew Scholar to help you to put into proper perspective, unless you are one yourself.

You really should start with Volume One--I spend about 1 year studying each volume. Daniel Matt's footnotes makes it possible to understand this exceptional work on Jewish mysticism.

All Volumes mare terrific and insightful--this one no more and no less

This is an important work.

This is an incredibly detailed book for beginners. This book very much holds your hand through the process. To do this, you will need wide ruled paper, as you'd find in any stationery store, a common pen to learn the basic forms, and Pilot Parallel Pen 2-Color Calligraphy Pen Set, with Black and Red Ink Cartridges, 1.5mm Nib (90050) specifically in the 1.5mm size. Grab some extra ink while you're at it. You'll need it. This goes through ink fast. This really does focus on the basics. First you learn the basic strokes, then the bare skeletal form of the lower case letters, then the letters themselves organized by similarity of form. Take your time. You should not move up to using the calligraphy pen until you have memorized the basic forms. You shouldn't need to ever look them up (they are all together on a single page if you have to) but rather, you should have them committed to memory. After all that, the entire process is repeated with the upper case letters, finally ending with numerals, punctuation, and flourishes.I've been doing a page per letter and that helps a lot. The goal is to build muscle memory and skill with them, so once you're done you can use them and not think about it.This teaches only one font, Italics, and only shows two others by way of where to go next. It is not a comprehensive guide to calligraphy, but is a suitably comprehensive guide to starting out with calligraphy. Once you have these basics down, you can pick a font and start learning it. Chase after too many to start, and you're only more likely to get confused. There is time, and there are plenty of books, for that later on.

This was somewhat helpful. If you don’t have patience or talent then you’ll deff have a problem. I didn’t get very far but it did have some great points. I did not become a master though.

It was a gift for a 9 year old that loves to draw, paint, and now learn the ancient art of Calligraphy.I learned in my teens, so this was a great craft to pass down.

Nice comprehensive book on calligraphy. Would recommend.

I expected more. I'm very disappointed.

The book was in great shape & I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Absolutely fantastic book

This book is a great primer for anyone wanting to learn the Italic hand. The strokes for writing each letter are clearly delineated, and the exercises are terrific. I especially like the way the author groups letters that have similar stroke patterns together for practice. Seeing the pattern between the simiar letters makes its easier to get the strokes down pat.

Review

[A] sorely needed resource for teens and, frankly, many adults... Downright revelatory. ... Kuklin captures these teenagers not as idealized exemplars of what it “means” to be transgender but as full, complex, and imperfect human beings. As Kuklin writes, “My subjects’ willingness to brave bullying and condemnation in order to reveal their individual selves makes it impossible to be nothing less than awestruck.” She isn’t wrong.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)Kuklin brings her intimate, compassionate and respectful lens to the stories of six transgender young people.... The collective portrait that emerges from these narratives and pictures is diverse, complex and occasionally self-contradictory — as any true story should be.Informative, revealing, powerful and necessary.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)[A] strikingly in-depth examination of the sometimes clinical complexities of being transgender, even as Kuklin’s empathy-inducing pictures put a human face on the experience. ... Kuklin’s important new book brings welcome clarity to a subject that has often been obscure and gives faces—literally and metaphorically—to a segment of the teen population that has too long been invisible. Speaking with equal impact to both the reader’s heart and mind, Beyond Magenta is highly recommended.—Booklist (starred review)Readers [will] become immersed in these young adults’ voices and experiences. The youth interviewed here do not uniformly share It Gets Better-style happy endings, but their strength is nonetheless inspirational as they face ongoing challenges with families, sexual and romantic relationships, bullies, schools, transitions, mental health, and more. The level of detail about their lives, and the diversity of their identities–including gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, and geography–provide a powerful antidote to the isolation and stigma that some transgender youth experience. ... There is much here that will resonate with and hearten the kids who need it and will foster understanding and support among those who live and work with transgender teens—School Library JournalPain and possibility are juxtaposed in this groundbreaking book that by its very existence portends a better future.—San Francisco ChronicleIt is a testament to Susan Kuklin's gifts as a listener and interviewer that her subjects describe their lives with such candor. ... Kuklin introduces each teen with a bit of background, and often (but not always) the teen's gender at birth. Kuklin treats her subjects with tenderness and respect. Her book provides both reassurance and answers to questions that teens may not even realize they have.—Shelf Awareness ProThe presentation of the spectrum of experiences is remarkably nuanced and sensitive... Kuklin also brings her skills as a photographer to the book’s design, using some pictures documentary-style interspersed throughout an individual’s interview, others grouped as breathtaking galleries that explore expression or isolation.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's BooksKuklin’s book is not just a lifeline for teens who are going through something similar and need to see themselves and their lives so openly portrayed—this book is an important read for the parents, friends, and loved ones who want to understand what a transgender teen might be going through. This book is worth having on any shelf in any library and will not linger there long. ... A highly informative resource that is powerful, respectful, honest, and most importantly, long overdue.—VOYAIn her edited transcriptions of the interviews, Kuklin lets her subjects speak wholly for themselves... Photographs (of most of the subjects) are candid and winning; and appended material, including Kuklin’s explanation of her interview process, a Q&A with the director of a clinic for transgendered teens, and a great resource list, is valuable.—The Horn BookThis book examines a sensitive issue and explains the spectrum and diversity within the transgender community as well as defines the distinction between transgenders and individuals identified as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or queer. ... This book is a valuable resource for students desiring information on gender identity and the LGBTQ community.—Library Media ConnectionRiveting.—Wall Street JournalWhile several books have illuminated the lives of LGBT youth, this is the first book to focus solely on trans subjects, in an attractive collection that's perfect for a coffee table or your favorite pre-teen's bookshelf.—The Advocate ("The Year's 10 Best Transgender Non-Fiction Books")An eye-opener. ... Through extensive interviews, Susan Kuklin has captured the thinking and personalities of each subject in this book. Her sensitive photographs shows them as interesting people who have struggled to understand themselves and how they each, in their own unique way, differ from the norm.—The Huffington Post[A] candid, inspiring book. ... The teens are members of a group, but also distinct individuals, each with a unique, highly personal story. It goes without saying that their decision to share these stories is courageous. But being brave and taking chances is what transitioning is all about.—The Chicago Tribune

This book helping me in my transition I love it

Absolutly love this book. I saw it at my school library and actually used as a reference for a project I did on the harms of transphobia, but I loved the book so much I just had to have my own copy. Its an easy read and you can easily jump around the stories so you don't have to read it from cover to cover. Since I myself am not transgender but my brother is it's really helped him understand himself and our mom get a better understanding of what he's feeling since the stories are from the perspective of actual trans people. Would definitely recommend for anyone interested in learning more about lgbt and trans people.

I was having a hard time understanding transgenders. A student of mine suggested this book. It gave me a much clearer understanding.

As a future therapist, I was looking to understand the experience of Gender Dysphoria. I learned so much from reading this book and thought the author did a very respectful, thorough job of telling the stories of these 6 teens.

These stories will warm your heart and bring you to tears, sometimes simultaneously. Real words from real teens in a rare unedited view of the amazing variety in our humanity. Transgender people are among the most courageous on the planet. This book shares their stories and lets you see for yourself.

I had the feeling I needed to read this book. Even though I have seen a few documentaries on LGBT issues this book gave me more of an understanding of what 6 transgender teens felt and experienced while growing up. I feel that each teen she interviewed gave me insight into how gender is a part of who you are, but it also it is not the only aspect of life that defines you. I felt their voices came through extremely well. By letting these teens speak up about their lives in a constructive way it helps open up dialogue in a productive building way. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to open up their mind to people who they would consider different.

Didn't really keep my interest, but I enjoyed reading a few of the stories. I'm so glad to live in a society where LGBT are finally being accepted, slowly, but surely.

This book is wonderful. I have used it with many of the LGBTQ teens I work with. They can always find someone to identify with. I have purchased additional copies to hand out.

The book is a very easy read and draws connections to many things. Could, theoretically, be given to children to read.

Can't wait to get her other book!

Everyone needs to read this very well-written and in-depth book. This one book has taught me so much. I'm going to re read it every year. When you think you know a lot on spiritual and mystical topics, a new powerful book comes along just at the right time.Thank you to the author for sharing.

Worth re-reading. Helps on days when I feel like I am starting to drift into a negative mind-state. Thank you!

I hooked on reading it. Although it is a short one, it has lots of valuable information. The author even include his ritual or routine towards preservation of sacred secretion. He referred to an external source for biorhythm calculations.

Review

"Peter is a pioneer, an adventurer, an inventor and a seer. His advice is the best kind of advice.  It is advice learned in the trenches, in the arena, on the fields of life."--Edward Hallowell, MD, from the Foreword, bestselling author of Driven to Distraction“Peter Shankman is living proof that living outside the bell-shaped curve, combined with a drive to succeed, can produce amazing results.”--Jordan D. Metzl, MD, author of The Exercise Cure  “While ADHD may be considered a ‘deficit’ to some, Shankman positions it as an attribute within the context of our immediate future. ADHD is a unique gift of creative synthesis that makes sense only inside of the complex digital networks and hyper-stimulation that now defines us.”   --Amanda Steinberg, CEO, Worth Financial and author of Worth It

2/27/18What turned me to this book? I’m sure many of your readers including yourself could relate to this but I’m on an endless pursuit to better myself. To your point, with ADHD we’re either on one end of the spectrum or the other, we live on the extremes and I wanted to make sure I was on the right side. School is where I struggled the most with the typical symptoms so I decided to poke around - I always knew I was wired differently. I was diagnosed just before getting into college. At any rate, after I started my initial dosage (Dexedrine) 6-8 months in, I nearly failed all my classes. I also lost all my creativity. My sister remarked I was zombie-like and lost my personality. So, I turned my cheek to the entire concept and began doing my own experimentation to improve myself. In college, even though I didn’t get the best grades, I had a strong entrepreneurial drive starting from elementary school. Junior year college, I co-founded my own business with a friend. That business was in the home loans space (yeah, I know). Obviously it didn’t last too long but luckily I was smart enough hedge with college. The experience gained from this business combined with my background in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Economics landed me a job on a trading desk as a Desk Strat (Quant). In this industry, it was a well known thing: If you didn’t have ADHD, you’re toast! All top performers had the symptoms and they were extremely sought after. Fast forward to now, I lead a Data Science team in Tech. During the journey of self-improvement, disciplining myself, etc. I got wind of Cal Newport’s series. I’ve been a huge advocate of his work since: Read 3 of his books, took one of his courses, read countless blog posts, and participated in one of his experiments thus far. That’s when I first heard about your ability to dial-in on airplanes (read this about 2-3 years ago). Recently, I read Ray Dalio’s new book : Principles. He talks about the benefits of understanding your own brain better and repeatedly emphasized "people are wired very differently," and the creative type need the most discipline. So in efforts to understand my strengths and weakness, I turned back to ADHD. (By the way, Ray’s definition of a “Shaper” is very similar to the strengths you described on pg.13) As I was browsing through books ADHD, I came across quite a few but the two I bought was yours and Driven to Distraction. On Faster, the reviews were solid and I recognized your name and it was recent.Things I could relate to.. The high you described after/during presentations, I experience a similar feeling - this past friday actually gave one to the entire organization. (I also happen to be good at presentations) I actually wrote this shortly after it: It's an incredible rush, from the nerves leading up to it and to afterwards when everyone's high fiving you and giving "Good job!" handshakes, asking tons of questions... it's absolutely riveting. It’s the same feeling I get from extreme sports and this high last for hours. I’ve been diagnosed about three separate times with ADHD. Though, I do well at my job, I’ve had repeatedly difficulty with coworkers and bosses (not all just 2). I’ve repeatedly been deemed talented but difficult / unmanageable and it’s not my intention to be difficult, but it’s my unique ways which got me into the “talented” category to begin with. Similar what you mentioned on pg 39. I live in Manhattan as well! So envisioning your stories were pretty easy. The Squirrel references for key insights.. Firstly brilliant analogy. My friends joke about how my dog and I have similar personalities but most say I'm very animated and cartoon character-like which bodes well for presentations, now that I think of it.What distinguishes this book from others.. Thought leadership and advice material is often provided as a disparate set of facts. You do a great job of connecting these into a greater, overarching concept.Which insights did I extract?- Early rises (5a) but I go straight to work (90 mins) - meditate - gym - office I can’t begin to tell you how much this has positively impacted my life. My issue was waking up and falling asleep before midnight. The WiFi light bulbs coupled with the REM Alarm app on my phone help SO MUCH! This is something I’ve been battling for practically my entire life. As for falling asleep my lights are triggered to dim into this Amber tone by 9pm. It automagically makes me sleepy.- EWR instead of JFK Though, I’m sure it wasn’t your intention by mentioning which airport you frequented but it made me question why I leave from JFK so often. Newark is much less crowded. Is that why you prefer it? Seems to be nearly the same commute time.- Decluttering I know you’re a major (pg 139) proponent of outsourcing, however I feel it comes with some bias of being a Manhattanite. The services industry is huge out here. I’ve also found some satisfaction in doing things myself. For example, If I want to take my mind off something stressful, cleaning or doing something else engaging helps me disconnect. But when I get my new job (hopefully soon) I’ll give this a shot. For now, I’ve formed this into a Sunday habit.- Hot buttons After you brought this up, this helped me identify specifically what about my boss drives me up the wall.- Sporadic Burst Exercises Has been a proven successful so far - an instant boost.- Commitment to researching digital productivity hacks So far I’ve mined a bunch of good stuff from your book but as the world evolves, I need to start a habit of it.- Double up on outdoor activities Couldn’t agree more with this. Even in the frigid winters here in NYC, I’ll find enough layers to go running along the Hudson on the way to Chelsea Piers every morning. Was advice tailored to people with ADHD? Yes, I would definitely say so. Certainly on decluttering and exercise. I know health & organization/planning is emphasized in most material on productivity, however I think this impacts people ADHD doubly, I can attest from my own experience. Anders Ericsson, in his book Peak mentions, likens mastering a craft to summiting a mountain: You could either spend a while trying to figure out the path to the top or have a Sherpa show you the way. You sir, are the ADHD Sherpa.Trivial to insightful ratio? I was very compelled to write all this to you so I definitely found it much more on the insightful side. Did it blow me away? No (because I read so many self-help books already) , but close enough. What I liked most was how well I could relate to you, that’s a key distinction from any other book I’ve read. One of my favorite authors Mark Manson puts it this way: Since this book is comprehensive, you'll find information that's either trivial or insightful. If it's insightful great! if it's trivial, use this as reaffirmation. I think of it kind of doing a math problem and looking at the solutions set just to instill confidence on your approach. I found this often to be the case, for example, I wasn’t sure about sporadically working out throughout the day. I had tried it once when I was unemployed, even though it was effective stopped because I got a job and it’s awkward to seek out remote areas of a building to do burst workouts. But your emphasis on it re-ensured, it was worth the cost. How fast did I read it relatively speaking?I read it faster than any self-improvement book I own and I have at least ~20.- Stuff I find helpful in my own routine- Meditation Vipassana- Exercise, leaning a bit more on the cardio end- Preparation & Planning at the hour-level- Routines & Habits- Nearly a paleolithic diet- Reading & Writing- Timer cube for time deterministic tasks like cleaningMy favorite part of the book Often times being as different could lead to poor treatment and/or being ostracized. He reminds us on how to deal with such behavior: At the end of the day you can't control other people's actions, but you can only control your own and you should have the courage to be yourself despite what others think.

Received the book one day ahead of launch, sat down, and finished it in one sitting. As the parent of a child who some have surmised might have ADHD, I wanted to understand more about it. All I see in my daughter is brilliance - she’s like a poet when she speaks, and she gets bored when BORING tasks or topics are placed before her. I get her, but I wanted to be armed with the facts.A bonus: I don’t have ADHD, but I still came away with some excellent tips on getting in shape, getting organized ... basically becoming a more productive person. And I trust Peter – he might have ADHD, but he’s someone who can write an entire book on an 18-hour flight. He has mastered focus!Great advice to those with ADHD, those who live with people with ADHD, those who have kids with ADHD. Thank you for this book, Peter!

I've followed Peter's podcast for about a year after discovering him while searching for something to listen to while on the plane. It's unreal how similar our brains work, the many stories of his everyday life scenarios and how he has dealt with them. Truly on the same page. When this book was announced, I snapped it up. Eager to learn how to use my "superpower", the life hacks he outlines are simple and easy to implement. I'm hoping to change my life and truly live my life faster than normal!I can't sit still long enough to read a book, this one has my attention and I cannot put it down.Squirrel!!!!!Putting words, experience, rules, and sense to what I have dealt with over my lifetime, I wish I would have found this sooner. If you, your spouse, children or family members have ADD/ADHD, you will learn what they cannot tell you about how their brains work.Buy this book and listen to what Peter is telling you regardless if you have ADD or not. You will gain time in the day you never thought you had. Thank you Peter!

Reading "Faster Than Normal" is like having a really long conversation with a good friend. A friend who really "gets you" and values your challenges as what makes you unique.Since being diagnosed with ADHD as a grad student in 1995, I have read A LOT of books on ADHD. What puts this title at the top of my "must-read" books are the practical tools Shankman suggests as well as the necessary reframing that needs to happen in order to leverage my brain's differences and make them work for me rather than against me.Shankman writes from his own personal expeerience and with his disarming style of self-deprecation. He's been in the same trenches and knows how hard one must work to be successful with ADHD. Not in spite of it, but because of it.

I stumbled across a Forbes interview of Peter Shankman last week. I've never purchased a book this fast in my life. I proceeded to download the entire backlog of his podcast and then went back to finish the article because I had 9 tabs open in Chrome and just got thoroughly sidetracked. Yep.Peter is fun to read, and it's so refreshing to approach my ADD as a superpower to be channeled, not a problem to be managed. Sure, most of us can't skydive and chill or fly to Tokyo just to write a book *cue eye roll* but we definitely all develop weird coping mechanisms.I didn't read the book so much for the hacks. Books are my source of dopamine, and I read more self-help and business books than is healthy (although I'm a writer and editor, too, like Jennifer Harshman on his FTN podcast). I know the tricks and the strategies, but I really enjoyed reading his book and listening to his podcast. It's just nice to know I'm not alone and that AD(H)D looks different on everyone.Highly recommended for anyone who's ever been overwhelmed by a calendar.

This book offers unique, usable recommendations in a digestible format. The author celebrates the awesome gifts that come with having a faster than normal brain, while offering ways to mitigate the blunders we all tend to face.
