The organization was really not clever: answers are at the back of each page with a question on it, which means you have to do them in order to keep from spoiling the previous question. Literally every other puzzle book I have ever had (and I've owned a lot) aggregates answers at the end - it's such an obvious thing to do. It doesn't help that pictures bleed through so much that you can clearly see them on the question side of the page - the tetris question is entirely ruined because you can see all the configurations (shown in the answer) beneath the question. The book itself says there's "no right or wrong way to proceed through the book", but that's not true: the only way to proceed is in order. Stumped on a question? You can't move on without risking getting a hint you don't want, or even the whole answer.

I just got this book the other day, so I haven't gotten through (nearly) the whole thing, but thus far, I've really enjoyed it. The puzzles I've tried are challenging but approachable. If you gravitate toward the puzzles/crossword section of the Sunday paper, it's probably worth purchasing this book. A different way to stretch your mind.

Amazing book. Love these puzzling problems and have always enjoyed his weekly posts. Recommend this for anyone who loves to think!

Too hard . Not really riddles

It was a gift and they liked it.

It’s a time machine back to 12th grade calculus.

Saw an excerpt in the latest issue of Games magazine. From that puzzle sample alone this book looks like the biggest beating of a grind of boring difficult mathematics No riddles at all. Hard Pass.

Wonderfully fun book and can’t wait to read more from this author.

Review

"This is clearly the most important and best-executed American music reference book to be published in 2004. This volume is indispensable and its usefulness is enhanced because it's clearly laid out and easy to read. ...there are enough tidbits to titillate even the most jaded veteran ofdiscographies. I am profoundly grateful to Tony Russell (and his associates) for compiling Country Music Records: A Discography, 1912-1942 and to Oxford University Press for its publication. It is no surprise that my copy is already showing signs of wear less than six months after its publication.Obviously this book is unreservedly recommended and will no doubt recieve high praise and will win numerous awards--accolades that it richly deserves." --American Music"This volume has turned out to be mightily impressive, beyond even what aficionados could possibly have hoped for. The American arm of Oxford University Press have served the project in the finest possible manner."--Musical Traditions"English discographer Tony Russell's magnum opus Country Music Records, is a massive discography of every pre-WWII country music recording ever made. For years, the thousands of commercial recordings which preserved the vital sounds of one of America's most original musics formed a vast, confusing terra incognita; here, after twenty years' work, is a map to those vast riches."--Charles Wolfe, country music historian and author of Classic Country, and A Good Natured Riot: The Birth of the Grand Ole Opry"The publication of Tony Russell's Country Music Records is the best publishing news that I've heard in many years. I only wish that this collection had been available when I began research on my book, Country Music, USA, back in the early 1960s. My work would be greatly improved if thediscographical history of country music had been available at that time. Thankfully, future students of American vernacular music will profit tremendously from this fine and meticulously documented study. When one views the results of Russell's labors, we can see why it has taken him so many yearsto finish. It is a first-class piece of scholarship and, as far as I can tell, every known 'hillbilly' recording has been included. The wait, though long, has been worthit."--Bill C. Quite expensive but a very important book for anyone doing research on country music or writing articles on the same. Wish Russell would do another covering the next ten or so years. About the only negative I see is that the only Canadians he listed is Wilf Carter (Montana Slim) and Hank Snow.

The long-awaited labor of love by respected discographers and country music experts Tony Russell and the late Bob Pinson has finally been published -- and it's been well worth the wait. The comprehensive discography is everything and more a collector of old-time country music could ask for. As well as being THE reference book on old-time country recordings, this magnum opus makes fascinating recreational reading. The sheer depth of scholarship is astounding, with collectors and discographers from around the world contributing. As Tony Russell says, though, it is regrettable that Bob Pinson didn't live to see the finished book. I have no hesitation in recommending this book. If Amazon allowed it, I'd award it a 10-star rating.

REALLY USEFUL FOR WESTERN SWING

This book is exactly what I've been looking for for some time, a discography for every Country record from 1921-1942, with session dates, accompanists, if any, with what instruments played, matrix numbers and catalog numbers of records actually issued and on what labels. A collectors' dream. Same format as Dixon & Godrich's Blues & Gospel Records 1890-1943, and Brian Rust's Jazz Records 1897-1942. I was interested in Cajun reecords, which, until this volume, were not well covered.

This product came highly recommended to me by some of the premier historians in the country music genre. It's a wonderful thing, almost miraculous, that Mr. Russell was able to put together such a monster of a research project in such a user-friendly format. Kudos to him and his team! I've spent hours looking through it and find it thoroughly informative and inspiring. I will certainly use it for all future research projects.

A great source. My only complaint is that the book is physically deficient and is falling apart.

I couldn't agree more with the rave reviews of the book itself, but the Kindle edition is a disappointment. For some reason searches don't reach the actual discography entries, as if they are in graphics mode. Big problem for research.

Every detail is collected for these pioneering recording artists. Very well organized and easy to reference. It is a perfect book!
