A very nice presentation that does an excellent job of emphasizing the meaningful applications of physics in everyday life. So if you were asking ``What can the Higgs particle do for me?'' this book will not answer that question, but it will show you the role of physics in things, such as cars, toasters etc..., the importance of which can hardly be denied. It will show you how toasting a bagel involves a large number of various physical disciplines (thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and electrodynamics, to name the most important).Of course, you may not need to read everything in sequence, but you will get a good general impression of to what extent physics is involved in everyday life, whether it is the several machines one uses, or simple facts which one knows by experience, but the cause of which may remain obscure (why, for example, does blowing on your coffee cool it down? what happens when the traffic grinds to a halt? The book gives interesting explanations to such doubts).Over all, a very nice book.

This book is not meant for the everyday person, regardless of what it says. I have an above average reading ability and this book was way beyond that. It was frustrating because I read and reread segments of text and still couldn’t understand the point they were trying to get across. So, just so much wasted money. Good luck if you decide to give it a try.

This book teaches you a lot about physics in a fun manner. if is easy to understand.

A fun, easy read

It was a gift and enjoyed very much by the recipient.

It was a fun read. I like the concept that we can understand common things though the perspective of hard science

Very interesting read, relatable

A gift to my husband who enjoyed it very much.

I found this to be an excellent set up for the continuation of the tale. Yes it is one of those books that captures your imagination as you sort out the interwoven story lines. Just as things start to come together and the characters start to become significant to the plot, you are left wanting to know what happens next. If you are a fan of fantasy and magic you will love "Marked The Ilenian Enigma Book 1" I am looking forward to the next book in this series!

Pedro Urví is a bestselling fantasy author who some years ago began to write as an experiment. Without any deliberate intention on his part, the experiment in writing turned into the Ilenien Enigma Series which went on growing until eventually it evolved into a epic saga of 4 books. Book 1, The Marked's second edition, was issued in 2016 and incorporates revisions. All 4 books were published by 16 July 2016.The Author is also a technologist in Bilbao with many years of experience working in the world of computer systems and cyber security. He has lived in the US, England and Spain and worked all over Europe. The Ilenian Enigma has become a hit with fantasy readers and quickly becoming an international bestselling series. His other passion is reading. He defines himself as a fan of epic fantasy, science fiction and thrillers. Something else he is passionate about is running. He runs along the river in Bilbao near the Guggenheim Museum as an escape from all these ideas, although mostly to relax. The series of 4 books each individually titled: Marked, Conflict, Trails and Destiny. A classic epic fantasy bursting with intrigue and action, adventure, packed with mystery, and danger. The hero is Komir: He could control the elements, Fire, Water, Air, Earth—and, from them, create magic... acquire an overwhelming power like the most powerful Mages of the great kingdoms... or develop the capacity to control the minds of others—make them obey your wishes—like the great Sorcerers and Shamans of faraway lands of the South. The reader discover a vast and fascinating universe, filled with lively, unique, entrancing characters.Decipher the Enigma of the Ilenians, which reigned in the dawn of time, only to disappear without trace. What happened to this Lost Civilization? What arcane mystery surrounds it?And there was Amtoko, the silver witch. Her true talent, her arcane Gift: the capacity to see and sense events and people beyond physical distances. Far removed from the remote continent of the Norriel tribe, beyond the Hundred Seas, hidden from the known world, new events were about to unfold that would change Komir’s life forever, and affect all Tremia. Tremia, a continent on the brink of war. Three kingdoms fighting to seize power over the great continent. The reader experiences palace intrigues, spying, treachery, murder and relentless pursuits. The author paints a landscape of darkness and light: The light of mystical powers, Komir’s medallion, the object of power. Can dangers of mystical origin, be defied. Discover the sinister figures; The Dark Lady, cults, danger, pains, perils, and death, political intrigue manipulating the fate of the continent from the shadows.Steel, Magic and Love. Live an adventure filled with intense romance, all-out fighting and magic.Komir, a young warrior from the mountains of Tremia, is trying to find his place among his tribe, the Norriel, when Fate knocks at his door in the cruelest possible way, to claim him as the hero he still does not realize he is. Together with his good friend Hartz he will begin a quest, an adventure full of mysteries and magical enigmas, which will lead him to discover his past, understand his present, and face a future of epic proportions. Will he be able to erase that dreadful incident that marked him out as evil in everyone’s memory? After passing the Ceremony of the Bear and winning the tournament, when he had finally succeeded in becoming a rightful Norriel warrior and achieved what he had always wanted... that will destroy all of it. His eyes filled with tears from a mixture of anger and frustration as he heard the accusations hurled at him like a merciless lashing. Komir is not an ordinary Norriel. He never has been and never will be. He is marked by destiny. A destiny that is now beginning to show itself, to unfold its wings. The great wheel of events has begun to turn after being still for many years. The Black powerful lady had just ordered a murder. A murder which if it turned out to be the Marked would be of unimaginable significance. It would change the destiny of the world as they knew it.Slowly a mysterious silhouette began to take shape at his side. It was dressed in a long black woollen tunic, with its head covered by a hood of the same color. The stranger’s shape eclipsed the sun which was bathing his body in light and blocking the pleasing sensation Komir had been feeling. He struggled to open one eye and looked at the visitor. He could not see the figure’s face; the only thing he could make out was a shadow beneath the hood. But he felt no fear in its presence, and instinctively knew the figure did not pose any threat. Though the shape was unfamiliar to him, it was not completely foreign. He was beginning to feel it was even somewhat recognizable. The enigmatic figure showed him its hands.Komir fought so long for his life, often closer to the kingdom of the mistress of eternal night than that of the living. There were moments when we feared she would take him with her.“But why come so far to attack a Bikia family? Was it chance or premeditated?”“Listen to me and pay careful attention, my young friend, because this will prove very useful to you in the future. On our great continent of Tremia, and in other faraway, unknown lands, there exist objects which have been created—or imbued—with great power.” Amtoko shook her head at Komir’s look of incredulity and went on. “Magical objects, just to be clear. Objects that have been created from the very same energy as that which feeds the Power, or have been infused with it for some purpose... what you might think of as ‘enchanted’. Do you understand, dear bear cub?”At the summit of the Mountain of the Ancestors, in Usik territory. The power of the element Earth lies buried there. Protect us, oh Mother Helaun, Foundress of our Order of Tirsar, with your goodness and compassion. Grant unto these good.“We humans have the tendency to fear and distrust things we’re unfamiliar with... Since they’re a very small minority, they’re afraid of being persecuted. The peasants can be terribly blind and violent when faced with their fears and superstitions. The writings have a strong tendency towards the power of destiny and destination.“Some things in life are not necessarily coincidence...” she replied, suddenly introspective. “Perhaps the gods have guided our paths to this crossroads... Perhaps it wasn’t mere luck...”As she finished her prayer, she pleaded sorrowfully: “I beg of you, Our Lady, to protect your valiant brothers, fallen here today in your name, as they travel to the celestial kingdom of the brave, so that by your side they may continue to serve the cause of goodness for the sake of all humanity.”“There’s one thing more we haven’t considered,” said Aliana. “If Haradin was right, and it looks as though he was, that being, that spirit, could be part of the Lost Civilization—the Ilenians.” We hear of a illusive "white soul". Myth, legends and magic form the basis of the story as described in the next passage:"From childhood on, Lindaro had always had a leaning towards studying and literature... He had dedicated countless hours to reading... well beyond the history of the kingdom, its allies and enemies, religion, healing, and a host of other topics. He had always had a penchant for history and religion, which went hand in hand throughout the ages. Tremia was a continent immensely rich in both. But the Dark Lady, Empress of Toyomi, was displeased, which was dangerous in the extreme. A warrior of hers could lose his head if he did not immediately rectify a perilous situation. His mistress did not tolerate even the slightest failure: After all, it was not the Marked's fault he had been born into a destiny that had inexorably placed him opposite to Dark lady. If he gave up that destiny, the Marked could save himself. But, no: the Dark Lady would not take that chance. Even if the Marked crawled on his hands and knees, begging, renouncing that destiny, she would kill him. Yuzumi would most definitely take no chances. She would slit his throat without a second thought. In the end, only one of the two could survive. Either him, or her. There was not room for both of them on the face of the earth. "You must die, Marked, and so you shall. Soon. Very soon. Of that I have no doubt."But there are three more books on this saga. For sure, the Marked 's destiny still has to change. An epic classic series, for the true reader of thrilling fantasy.Scarlett Jensen31 January 2017

Marked: The Ilenian Enigma, Book 1) by Pedro Urvi is a fantasy genre story aimed at a younger audience, grades 8-12. This book is a great addition to the epic fantasy genre with this story being the first in a series of four books. An interesting mix of the Lord of the Rings style with the Lost City of Atlantis, Marked is cleverly written and not only contains a solid backstory, but a fantastic setting as well. The first scene of the book is enough to draw the reader in, with a battle between a crazed assassin and a magician who is trying to save a small child. The language used in the book is elegant, and may seem wordy to some, but the level of detail is nuanced and necessary to fully describe what is happening. With plenty of different characters to get to know, this book will satisfy readers who crave variety in science fiction fantasy while having an astute plot line in a magical setting.

"Marked" is a good beginnings of an epic young adult fantasy tale. It has multiple character point of view so the reader gets the opportunity to get background on several characters. Probably the only thing I didn't like about the story was the vagueness about what "marked" means. I kept hoping that one of the characters would explain this phenomenon and if it was different from having the "Gift". I also will admit that Komir is very stubborn and has a good amount of growing up to do. I sympathized with him about the strange situation he is in but wasn't sure if I liked him. Most of the characters that were not villains were likable and felt realistic. Aliana has a kind heart and is generous. The story line is complicated with smaller struggles happening between characters like the budding romance between Lomar and Jasmine. I appreciated that there wasn't confusion when the point of view changed, which sometimes happens with so many moving parts. The book ends on a slight cliff hanger leaving the reader wondering if Komir was betrayed or attacked. Also left wondering if Komir and Aliana will meet and what is Kayti hiding? I look forward to reading the second book to see what happens next.
