These 'Art Of ...' books are not exactly what someone might think. They are not the art of the film, per se, but the art that was used by the creators along the way while they made their final decisions about what everything, from characters to backgrounds to heroes and villains, will eventually look like when the film is done. They're better suited for art and film students to see the creative process in action than fans of the film looking to relive a special moment that meant so much to them while they watched it on the screen. That said, they are a wonderful addition to your library, and I can't recommend the Pixar ones highly enough. :)

I wish I'd purchased the physical copy. I was happy to learn the stories behind bits of a film that I love so much. I could hear the soundtrack in my head the whole time. Buy it! Now!

Is awesome how this book beggings, A sequence drawing of Carl Fredricksen getting older, starting as a kid. The rest of the book have the concept art of all the characters, background illumination and more.A fun part is that the story of the movie happens in my country, so watcing how the pixar team made a Map and analysis of the "National Park Canaima" is really fun, and made me proud of the way they put it in the movieThis is a great book, for a great movie

Beautiful Book!I have my fair share of Disney Pixar Art books, and while I love them all, this one is one of my favorites. It's divided into classic Movie Art Book sections, but all the art is wonderful! The character design sketches for Mr. Fredrickson on the inside cover are just endearing, and I particularly like that aspect of the book. While a lot of the art is digital now, much of it was also brilliant gouache, which is lovely.I recommend this for any collector of art books, or even if you're just an avid fan of the movie, because it really is a wonderful companion to the film itself.

Not quite what I expected, but we still enjoyed it.

Love it!

Absolutely gorgeous! I adore this.

Collector books. I will have all his books are like having story boards in my home office. Paper Artwork Enjoyed seeingThanks and sorry my bad englsih

I like the way the book is set up, very easy to read. The front of the book has a drill matrix which helps you easily find the drills. Other than a couple of drills, most information here is very elementary and for someone who has never coached or played. I am a little more experienced as a coach, but still found some nuggets of good information. I believe you will learn something by purchasing this book even if it just provides additional plays.

This book helped to make my first coaching experience go better than it would have without. It was definitely lined up with how I felt 3rd and 4th graders should be coached, and while I had more players than most teams it wasn’t hard to adjust things to work for us.

I've been playing basketball all my life and love the sport but coaching is completely different. Knowing what to do and knowing what to teach are two different things. This book was easy to read and is a great tool to get started with. It explains the fundamentals that the kids need to know and gives a reasonable amount of drills to reinforce those skills. I use something from it in every practice. Please read the title, it tells you everything you need to know."Coaching Youth Basketball" - This book is about the basic fundamentals to teach to new, inexperienced or even older kids who have been poorly coached. It's an introduction to dribbling, passing, shooting, offense, and defense. They also touch on in-bound plays and beating a press."Only the Essential Drills, Practice Plans, Plays, and Coaching Tips" - This is a good thing, it's easy to read, understand and teach. It's a good starting point, as you and your team advance you will need more drills, plays, etc.

I bought this to coach my sons 10 and under team. I haven't played basketball in over 20 years. This book is very detailed and has drills for offences and defense. I am extremely pleased with this book.

I am new to coaching this year (4-5 grade boys) so I needed a book that would demonstrate the basics as I did not have any formal training growing up. The book is easy to read and lays out the basics from individual skill techniques to defensive and offensive sets for the team to run. It also has a schedule list of things to run a practice so you do not have to come up with one yourself to start. I have found this book to be very helpful. The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars is that I was hoping that it would contain more "fun drills" for the kids to do (kids really like the "knock out" game in it). Overall, worth the money..

Concise and free flowing material. Great starter book for any youth coach boys or girls, community school or private. Highly recommended

Basics of the basics, made me want to write my own book and share my experience. Good for the person brand new to come coaching and basketball.

Very good book. I found it quite helpful. Didn't agree with 100% of their advice, but that wasn't my expectation going in (I wouldn't expect anyone to agree 100% with me either). Much appreciation to the authors for writing this.

I can easily teach science and math no problem even if I am not given any curriculum, but ask me to teach art and I have a panic attack. I love art I really do and I think its a very important part of a rounded education, but I am more of a craft person. I never took formal art unless you count that elective on American art history in which we just learned well history (not art theory or even how to draw). So I basically had NO clue what should be taught for formal art education in any way. I found a lot of free stuff online, but with no idea what was or was not appropriate. It was too time consuming to try to figure it all out... so I did some research on amazon looking at different books and bought this one by Evan-Moor. All I can say is thank you for showing a systematic approach to learning formal art without a lot of unnecessary wordage that I do not have the time to read! I literally can pick up this book and open it to the first lesson and just go (as long as I have a stocked art supply cabinet). If I really want to find a handout on a particular topic - it really is not that hard now because at least I know what I am looking for because I know what topics to teach and focus on. So thank for this book from the bottom of my heart... now I can go back to planning excellent science experiments ;-)

Purchased this book as a quick reference for simple ways to teach some basic art concepts when I was recently hired as an Art Teacher for an after school program. This book is REALLY well outlined and illustrated, so it's very easy to read and follow if you need an idea in a pinch! Even someone who is subbing for Art (but maybe isn't as familiar with the concepts) can easily create a simple lesson for any child!Has some great back-pocket projects that could be substantial for the youngest kids, and can ben quickly implemented. Definitely a great book to keep on hand when teaching art to young kids, especially for an ART CAMP setting! My only complaint would be that a majority of the projects include PAINT, which is a bit more difficult to use in the program I am in, and some of the projects seem a little "young", but all in all, a great starter point for planning and reference!

Great for someone that has no idea about art as a beginner. Excellent for a special education teacher to teacher something else different as a therapy. It has different projects for each lesson. It covers pretty much every subject in art.

We love this book and have added it to our curriculum. I have a first grader and a kindergartner and the lessons inside are easily taylored to fit their needs and understanding. There are some other lessons that are beyond their grasp, but we just skip those. Each chapter covers a different concept such as lines, color, texture, etc and has several activities for each chapter. You can do them all or just pick a few and move on to the next chapter. Its great and can be used multiple years to fill in with the activities you skipped or repeat the ones they really liked.

Bought this book for homeschooling my son. He is currently in 1st grade (6 yo). Some of the activities/projects and concepts were a bit advanced, but easily adjusted to his learning level. Each concept has multiple activities/projects to reinforce the concept. Some of these activities are geared more toward the classroom and multiple people. Easily solved, as I did the activity as well! My child enjoyed my interaction and I had fun. This book will last many years and grow with my child's abilities.

This isn't a "teaching" guide at all. It merely is a project book. Yes it encompasses the elements in a hands on manner but that is all. I had to supplement with other books to teach the art lesson and use this book for projects. The artists in the back are really the only teaching aspect of this book. The color wheel worksheets were good but again not great.

So far, this is the best art book I have found for homeschooling my Kindergartener and 1st Grader. I teach art but more for older children and I have hate the other books I’ve purchased. This one is awesome and a lot of fun to work through together.

This has a really nice selection of projects for children. So often I pick up these type books at the library only to get them home and say under my breath how thankful I am I didn't buy them. This is well worth having.

#9,993 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Yesterday, my four-year-old son spotted his first millipede. (My husband called it a centipede -- Thank goodness for Google!) Anyway, the multi-footed creature soon became a math topic. And that math topic led to me finding this book.Although my little boy can read only a few words on his own, we have started incorporating "easy readers" into his story times. They tend to be shorter, so instead of reading three books, we can easily read five books in the same amount of time. They also tend to feature repetition and showcase certain words so that kids can learn to read on their own. They can also be really boring for the adult reader. Two things save One Hundred Shoes from falling into that final category: Charles Ghigna's wit and Bob Staake's artwork. One Hundred Shoes is a clever and rather sweet book in poem. Charles Ghigna creates such wonderful "word pictures" that the poem could stand alone without illustration. He also, however, creates such marvelous phrases that a talented illustrator can walk right in (pun intended), and Bob Staake does.Bob Staake takes the witty phrases and amplifies them to the point of the hilarious with his brilliant and silly illustrations. Every pages vibrates with activity and humor, but, as a Chucks girl, I have to say that my favorite two-page spread has the sneakers on it.

My 5yo thinks this is just the funniest book. She's still at a Level 1 Step into Reading level, so she doesn't understand the simple math concepts in it yet. Aside from the word "centipede," the verbal reading skills are still at a Level 1 in this book.

First of all, those in the know will have to get past the fact that despite the meaning of its name, a centipede tends NOT to have 100 feet. Those who can are certain to enjoy this simple story about shoes, feet and multiples of 100. Fortunately, the story is short, fast-paced and has logical rhymes. Unfortunately, the "math" part is really only about three sentences long and includes only: two times fifty, five times twenty and ten times ten. Even so, with arithmetic seeming to sometimes take a back seat to reading and writing, this is an easy, fun way to expose your younger reader to the number 100 and some of its factors. Reading level is K through Second grade. This would be a great book to read during 100th Day of School celebrations. Also good: Mary Clare Loves to Share.

Great book. However, there's one page that shows nearly all 100 shoes, but only like 98. I'm like, really? If we're going to count the freaking shoes at least have all 100. Still a fun book for my 5 year old.

My 3 year old granddaughter loves this story and asks me to read it over and over. The rhyming makes it fun to listen to. She loves looking for the centiped's tail throughout the story.

My grandson read this book tonight and he was confused at first as to why he needed shoes but he did enjoy the little story. I like these simple reading books for the kids to start out reading with. There isn't a lot on a page to frustrate and overwhelm them.

Wonderful Book-I purchased this book for my Great Granddaughter and she loves it.Sincerely,F.E. Manuel

My 1st grade daughter really enjoyed this book, while it didn't have more words then some of her Level 1 readers it did contain some challenging words which was nice, she loved counting all the shoes and ways to make 100, she did great reading it to me.

I am relatively new to blogging and I have engaged in a lot of research and reading to gain insight into freelance writing and blogging. I was in search of doable monetization strategies and this little book came along and delivered for me. I purchased this title because of another book summary by the same author. Of course what pulled me to this author was his second book, titled " Getting to $2,000 a month in 90 Days." Who would not be pulled in by that title? Nevertheless, it lead me to this short read and I am grateful; I purchased both books. This book provided an understandable overview and a good place to start if you are new to blogging and freelance writing. This was a welcomed score, it gave me practical and candid thoughts, ideas, and actions to take to be successful as a blogger. I found the information straight forward concerning a variety of topics. A decent book to have in your library. For me, a valuable find.8/9/2017

The author does a great job of explaining the different types of blogs and how to monetize them. There are some good strategies including promotion of affiliate links that will benefit both the beginner and the advanced blogger.

This was an easy to read and understand book. I've blogged before, but this time I want to take my new blog to the next level. Looking forward to using these strategies.

Nice quick read pack with information.

Clear and concise book with experience-evidenced advice. Thanks!

Covers overview well, and provides insight on what to focus on. Lacking in examples of great blogs. Bonus is probably worth price of the book.

This book clearly explains what is involved in marking an income from blogging. This is an organized approach to the profession. Very helpful.

While an interesting book full of useful information on the needlework arts, there are no illustrations in this version.

This book has many knit and crochet patterns of old time domestic projects like an antimascar and collar. Be aware that the wording is not quite like today, and follow their instructions on how to do single and double crochet, etc. Not sure of the year, but this seems from the late 1890's or so. Very fun to try and re-create from the old patterns that are simple and leave much to your creative imagination. Also, the title says with Twelve Illustrations, but there are no pictures...Illustrations must mean Patterns. Interesting book from a historical perspective.

patterns for knitting, crochet and netting but NO illustrations. that was the problem with this book. if you are a beginner this is not the book for you. I know how to crochet and can knit ok but without illustrations the patterns can be confusing.

dont really refer to much as it only has some of what i look for, so unless your into all 3 its not worth it to buy for just one craft

This is a wonderful free book and I've enjoyed crocheting some of the shawls and mittens. I'm looking forward to making some of the other items and following the patterns within its pages.

This is a reproduction of a vintage booklet. Interesting to die hard needlework enthusiasts.

these craft books are great, I love to find all the information I can get. I always try to learn more stitches, and creative ways to make new things. I hope you will enjoy this as much as I do. It all depends on your hobbies, and the things you like to do.

This is a well assembled collection of historical crafting methods that is essential for all crafters libraries.

My daughter brought this book home as a part of her course work and she came to me for help. After reading this by myself and talking it over with my daughter, I can safely say this is truly a worthy read, especially in today's climate. The thing that points to the excellence of this book is the fact my 10 yr old daughter loved it and actively came to me to discuss. She had questions on the relationship between Esperanza and Miguel. She expressed to me the sadness she felt in the losses Esperanza had. My baby talked with me! This was wonderful.

I bought this book as Kindle+Audible (Whispersync), but ended up mostly listening to the audio, as I found the narration by Trini Alvarado excellent, and adding a lot to the atmosphere, with pronunciation of Spanish names etc with the right accent. The main character and narrator, Esperanza, is the spoiled daughter of a rich ranchowner in Mexico. The family’s situation changes when Esperanza’s father dies; and her mother Ramona, rather than marrying a man she does not want, decides to flee with her daughter to the United States. This is during the time of the Great Depression, and they end up in a poor Mexican labour camp in California. Esperanza has a hard time adjusting to the hardships of their new life – very different from what she’s been used to so far. But gradually, she learns to cope with the challenges. The story is based on / inspired by the life of the author’s own grandmother, also called Esperanza (Spanish for “hope”). The author has also cleverly incorporated the rhythm of the various harvest seasons into the story. I really liked the book, and I think it gives “food for thought” for our own time as well, concerning how we treat the present migration situation (not only in the US but the rest of the world as well).

this book has been amazing to read, i found myself on the verge of tears at times just imagining a young girl going through harsh struggles in life like Esperanza after only knowing a pampered life. the story is captivating to say the least. the way it's written is great for kids that have an expanded vocabulary, 4 years and up according to the description product detail seems a bit young. it's perfect for older kids about 8 years and up, teens and even adults like myself that LOVE reading award winning kid's books so that I can buy or recommend for family and friends.

This book opens a window into a different time era, culture, and way of life. Esperanza is used to living as a queen on her family’s ranch in Aguascalientes, Mexico. She has a loving family, and wealth beyond imagine to provide her with silk dresses, dolls and servants. However, everything changes when Esperanza’s dad is killed by bandits a day before her 13th birthday. Unable to own the ranch without her father, and the overwhelming pressure from her uncle’s desire to marry Esperanza’s mother, they decide to move to a migrant camp in California.Everything has changed for Esperanza once she arrives to America. She no longer has servants, wealth or her grandma to keep her comfort. She must rise above all these changes in order to survive. She has to learn how to work and provide for her family, while still grieving her father’s death. When her mother becomes sick from a dust storm and gets worse due to depression, Esperanza has to work even harder. She goes from not knowing how to sweep to being a productive worker like everyone else. Esperanza proves herself to the others when she works without complaining and attempts to save her earning to bring her grandmother to California with them. While this is all happening other works are trying to form a workers union and strike so they can earn higher wages and better living conditions. This adds some drama and conflict while also giving an insight into the workers lives.Esperanza does not only learn how to be a great worker but also realizes she can be happy without having silk dresses or servants. She really progresses with having a better attitude in working hard and staying strong through trials. She is able to see other’s perspectives and can have empathy for them. Although at times I would become frustrated because she would act selfish or like a spoiled brat. It was hard to read through at times because I desired for her to reach the point that she grew up and realized she can’t have her old life back. This books also touches on more important issues such as the Dust Bowl, Mexican Deportation Act, and the discrimination foreigners receive. It also shows the perspective of immigrant workers and how they struggle to even just put food on the table. I really enjoyed this book because Esperanza really does grow up and learn how to be responsible. It also would be great to incorporate into a classroom. I would think either a first or second year of Spanish would be an appropriate level for this book. It would be an easy book to introduce some Spanish vocabulary and talk about the culture of Mexico. I would break this book up by chapters and have them students write down the Spanish words as they read the book and make any notes about the Mexican culture or immigration. I would also want to talk about the historical events that took place during the time this story is taking place. I could co-plan with the history teacher to see if while they learn about the Great Depression in history they could read a real example in my class.

This book is required reading for my granddaughter who is entering middle school in Florida. The subject crosses many borders and many themes. It presents real problems in complex ways,so that you can see all sides of the question. There are many questions still unanswered in our society. It is a book that is hopeful and realistic. I really enjoyed it with her.

Mind-blowing work. Seriously. I read "Turing's Cathedral" first and expected this 15 year earlier work by George Dyson to be of lesser quality. I was thoroughly surprised with his treatment of the subject, especially in the late 1990's. To be fair, they are very different books written with different intent. "Turing's Cathedral" is a very thorough historical account of the IAS, Manhattan Project, and all the work involving early von Neumann machines. It was entertaining and thought-provoking, but ultimately a retrospective as a true historical account. "Darwin Among the Machines" is a forward-thinking work, and a terrific one at that. It begins slow as it gives all the necessary background material in the same manner as James Gleick's "The Information." Having already read "The Information" and other similar works chronicling the development of modern information theory, I was resolved to rate this 3/5 stars and behind Gleick's book (though to be fair it predates "The Information" by over 10 years). However, it really opens up around Chapter 9 (Game Theory) and boldly goes where no other book on evolution and/or information theory has gone before or since - tackling intelligence (natural, artificial, and invisible), economics, evolution, and technology in a master stroke. The last 1/3 of the book is simply inspiring in its concepts, and you realize that the longer first part of "known" background material is really there to set up the real topic at hand. It is the better of Dyson's two major books and ironically the more modern one (by far). I consider it as profound as Richard Dawkin's "The Selfish Gene" in turning an old subject completely around on its head. Well done!

This book is a great collection of history around the evolution of computers and artificial life. It reminds me of the 1970s BBC-produced "Connections" series that aired on PBS years ago. The show illustrated how modern inventions had their roots in centuries-old technology, and traced their path from the early inventions through various iterations up to the modern solution. Each chapter takes a single topic and starts back in time when it was the germ of an idea in someone's writings and carries it forward into the 1990's. This is not a technical book nor a book about computer science. It is more about the field of artificial life or perhaps artificial intelligence and brings the threads of evolution, encoding, hardware, software, networking, and other topics under a common theme. I picked it up because of a recent interest in the work of Nils A. Barricelli and was not disappointed in this regarded. I understand the other reviewers that were disappointed in the lack of technical detail, though I really don't think this is the aim of the book.My one complaint is that Dyson does get his details wrong at times. For example, when discussing Ray's Tierra system he implies that all digital creatures were 80 instructions long, which is not true. This makes me wonder what other details he may have off as well. I read the book as more of a broad swath of history, in which the flow of time and growth of the idea is the focus and theme. The book is extremely well notated and has sparked my interest to look up the original works behind a few areas of discussion. Like many writer's in the 1990s, Dyson expected big results in artificial life over the coming years which did not come to pass. However, as a comprehensive history of the fields behind Alife this is well worth a visit.

Since Dyson likes metaphors and analogies, I guess I will use one or two for my review. Reading the book was like eating a plate of spaghetti and meatballs: pasta for carb loading, meatballs for substance, and sauce for spicing things up. With a green salad thrown in, it would have made a tasty meal with more value. Translating my analogy, the spaghetti was the many stories told from the history of information technology, squirming around on the plate. The meatballs were the themes, compact and separate, and the sauce was the literary references. The structure of the book was much more like the flowing of a river than the design of a building. In the end, the river seems to flow into the ocean; seep into the ground; and evaporate into the air. It is up to the reader to draw off some of the water to put to work. My review may suffer from the same weaknesses, so be sure to read others. I don't like it when others based their ratings on media, but have to say that the print was too small.

Someone I admire reccomended me this book. The author does a good job on explaining why he thinks that machines will become intelligent beings, by making analogies between evolution and how technology has improved over time. However, be prepared to see the name of many philosophers and many important names tat you may not know. The author makes some assumptions about the target audience, in which I have to say, not everyone will enjoy this book, since it can become a difficult reading.

Another good read on the origins of modern computer science. Some interesting stories of Babbage, Hollerith and Van Neumann. I particularly enjoyed Babbage's human computers.A great read while kicking back at the beach.

Item arrive on time

An intellectual tour de force from a rare and extremely valuable perspective. Dyson is brilliant and his brilliance shines through every page of Darwin Among the Machines.

A nice intro to Butlerian perspective.

If you like white wolf....mmmm...how about I phrase it like this...If you like 'OLD world' White Wolf, this is a must have. This clan book tells a great deal of clan history as well as tidbits ofCanite history that are from a non Camrilla / non western angle. My game group prefers the older version of the Assamites...(blood curse, titheing your sire, honor...) and within that breadth, this is a great clan book. If you prefer the new version of assamites within old world, that you want the other clan book. Niether is the wrong answer. you just have to decide, what do you want our of your game / assamites. The only thing I wish it had was better Merits / Flaws.

You have to have this to complete any clan book collections Some surprising stuff that's for sure!

I really needed this.

Excellent condition and good read

It does a wonderful job of explaining The Clan Assamite

Very fast delivery and was just as described.

The Assamites, a clan of assassins hailing from Persia and Arabia, have long been characterized by negative stereotypes in the World of Darkness gamelines. The first edition clan book was filled with offensive remarks and stereotypes about Islamic culture and the Middle East. Clayton Oliver's revision of the clan was a very welcome change from all of that. The Assamites are detailed as being more or less like any other clan. The first chapter opens with telling us everything that we have been told about the clan is a lie, created in part by the western clans, and in part by the Assamites need to remain secret. We are given an extensive history of the Assamite's role in Middle Eastern history, from ancient Mesopotamia, Persia, Babylon, Carthage, Greece and Assyria to Byzantine era. Great detail is given to the Crusades, the back story being that the Crusades shattered the Assamite's relation to the west. From then on, we get some brief views of Assamite activities during the Ottoman Empire, the British invasion of India, the formation of the Arab States, and finally the modern era.The next chapter goes into detail concerning the Assamite's social structre. The main body of the clan, following an ancient Mesopotamian God-King Ur-Shulgi, is given great detail. With social ranks going from the Du'at (three leaders of the clan) to the Silsila (elder priest types) to the Fida'i (initiates to the clan). We also learn that there are three Assamite castes. The main caste, the warriors, are not the assassins that are always presented as Assamites. Indeed, the warriors were once judges and law enforcers, but slowly changed to warriors over time. And not all, or even most, are assassins. Indeed, they are body gaurds, soldiers, straegists, communications experts, technicians, smugglers, martial artists and bedouin lords. There are also two other castes. The sorcerers are blood magicians, drawing from ancient Hebrew, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Arabian, Persian and Indian magics. They are just as potent and deadly as the Tremere. The other caste are Viziers, the scholars and artisans of the clan. Not only are they record keepers, scholars and historians, but also scientists, linguists, religious experts, artists, jewellers, calligraphers, storytellers, legal expets, journaliss, Bollywood producers, politicians and so forth. Each gets a write up, complete with advantages, weaknesses, clan disciplines and bloodlines, and even specific ranks and offices. We are then presented with the Laws of Haqim, which unit the Assamite clan and guide them towards their goals. Political factions, from the loyalists, to those who want to break with the clan, to the Sabbat and Camarilla members, to those who follow other paths (like the Israeli Leopards of Zion, all female Furies of Erinyes and the elite hashashyin of the Web of Knives) are explored. We are also treated with steroetypes about the "foreign" clans and other creatures of the night. The chapter closes out with some details on unique Assamite disciplines and merits and flaws. Not only do we get unique multi-discipline powers, but also higher level Quietus powers, unique Celerity and Obfuscate powers, a vizier-specific Auspex power and the all new Assamite sorcery disicpline which draws on Mesopotamian and Persian blood magics. And of course, the book closes out with nine ready made Assamite templates (three for each caste, and one for each faction), several signature characters (some with stats) and an Assamite specific character sheet. Some of the more interesting templates included the archaeologist, character assassin, prophet of caine and witch-hunter (cool). Naturally, the signature characters included Fatima al-Faqadi (the Assamite signature character), but it also includes some really neat ones like Mata Hari (THE Mata Hari), Janni (an Israeli Assamite), Tegyrius (leader of the Schism who once rode with Alexander the Great) and Nar-Sheptha (a Babylonian sorceress bound into a series of CD-ROMS filled with magic lore), amongst others. All in all, I think this book has been extremley useful for the vampire setting, getting rid of some extremely offensive and prejudiced views from earlier editions and making vampire games fit better into a Middle Eastern setting. If you want to be able to play an Assamite with any depth, this book is a much needed supplement. Easily the best of the Clan books.

The new CLANBOOK ASSAMITE offers a wealth of information about this often misunderstood clan, challenging many long standing assumptions. It backs off things (like the duty to destroy other vampires) that made Assamites difficult to play with non-Assamite characters. Changes from the original CLANBOOK ASSAMITE include expanded roles for female and non-Middle Eastern Assamites. The Assamite belief that they may judge (and punish) other vampires receives a noble explanation here along with the Laws of Haqim which codify such duties. The ranks and factions of Assamite society are examined (antitribu included). The three basic Assamite castes (warrior, scholar and sorcerer) receive full treatment as sub-classes with their own discipline specialties etc. The book describes the ramifications of the Schism between Ur-Shulgi's followers and those of Al-Ashrad. The features are great: MET statistics, notable Assamites, character templates, discussion of clan disciplines, new discipline variations including an Assamite Sorcery path. Now the bad news: IMO this is the hardest book in the new CLANBOOK series so far. It constantly assumes prior knowledge. For example, a summary of the Schism and explanations of terms like "Web of Knives" and "dispossessed" are only provided toward the end although they are mentioned throughout the book as if they're already familiar. Unexplained, specialized terms ("kalif") sometimes appear. (The original CLANBOOK ASSAMITE had a glossary at the beginning- an unfortunate omission here.) Ur-Shulgi and Al-Ashrad, meanwhile, are omitted from the notable Assamite section- despite mention throughout the book and despite the fact that an update of the character profiles in CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT was needed in light of the Schism. (You'd need familiarity with other books to recognize the picture of them on pg. 30.) Less scattered discussion of issues related to the Path of Blood (outlined in VtM's basic rules) would have been helpful. Some advice if this book overwhelms you: There's a shorter, more concise, (clearer) treatment of many of the main points in LIBELLUS SANGUINIS III: WOLVES AT THE DOOR (for VAMPIRE: DARK AGES) as well as an Assamite Sorcery path. (The new CLANBOOK ASSAMITE seems to be a needed update of that material for a modern setting.) There's background on the characters of Ur-Shulgi and Al-Ashrad in CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT but little about their roles in the Schism. NIGHTS OF PROPHECY has a good summary of the Schism (including Ur-Shulgi and Al-Ashrad) and other recent Assamite developments. BLOOD MAGIC: SECRETS OF THAUMATURGY has more paths for Assamite sorcery. Material about Islam and vampire characters in Muslim settings is provided in WORLD OF DARKNESS: SECOND EDITION (chapter on Arabia) and in the V:DA supplement JERUSALEM BY NIGHT . The original CLANBOOK: ASSAMITE also has a list of selected reading on the Middle East.Don't get me wrong. I recommend this book highly. It changed the way I viewed this clan. (I used to HATE Assamites, actually.) It's essential for Assamite character players and for Storytellers. It may take extra effort for those new to VtM but it's worth it.

The Writer's Practice: Building Confidence in Your Nonfiction Writing, by John Warner

Review

“Warner generously offers useful hints for improving nonfiction writing. . . . Warner’s style reads like informal, intelligent conversation founded on a genuine desire to share what he knows, and his helpful book will serve as a trusty companion to writers on their own or in class.”—Publishers Weekly“An essential guidebook in or outside the classroom for anyone who wants to think, act, and communicate as a writer.”—Library Journal“In this uber-handy guide, veteran rhetorician Warner invites readers to sharpen their written communication skills. . . . The guide is well-organized and extremely readable, infused with the perfect amount of Warner’s personality and experiences. Unique and thorough, Warner’s handbook could turn any determined reader into a regular Malcolm Gladwell.”—Booklist“In The Writer’s Practice, John Warner invites us on a quest. Quite literally—the book is no passive read, but instead an interactive journey. Warner lays out a map of writing challenges and puzzles (he calls them ‘experiences’), provides tools for the odyssey, and keeps up a friendly, encouraging banter throughout. The experiences stretch one’s writing practice in compelling ways, covering a wide variety of genres and skills. Completed collectively or selectively, the practices would assuredly benefit students, professionals, or anyone who desires to improve their writing.” —Sarah Rose Cavanagh, Assumption College, author of The Spark of Learning: Energizing the College Classroom with the Science of Emotion    “Think you can’t write? John Warner disagrees. In his carefully plotted guide to better writing, Warner argues that with focused practice, you CAN improve. So can your students. The Writer’s Practice offers an easy-to-follow series of lessons that, while prompting you to write, build essential writing muscles. An ideal book for anyone new to teaching writing or for aspiring writers keen to improve their craft.” —Carol Jago, long-time high school English teacher, past president of the National Council of Teachers of English, and associate director of the California Reading and Literature Project, UCLA  “A fast and fun guide to what matters in writing (spoiler: attention to audience and purpose), covering everything from academic papers and business reports to travel guides, memoirs, jokes and even obituaries. Warner writes for readers, and they’ll love him for it—plus they’ll learn to do the same.” —Daniel F. Chambliss, Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology, Hamilton College, and co-author of How College Works“With its focus on doing rather than explaining, The Writer’s Practice invites collaboration. Whatever route readers takes through the book (and Warner outlines several possibilities), they will encounter new and challenging authorial tasks, helpfully contextualized. Working through the various sections, writers will practice the “attitudes, skills, habit of mind, and knowledge” that Warner positions as critical to effective writing. The end product will be a sort of co-authored text, reflecting Warner’s goals and methods, and the reader’s effort and growth. Adaptable for classroom use but just as valuable for solo practitioners, The Writer’s Practice is an indispensable guide for writers and instructors alike.” —Susan Schorn, Writing Program Coordinator, School of Undergraduate Studies, University of Texas–Austin  “John Warner’s approach to nonfiction merges his experience as a creative writer and his expertise as a teacher of college composition. Rather than see creative and academic writing as opposed, Warner encourages the aspiring nonfiction writer to adopt a dual perspective: Analytical writing can be like a dialogue. A memory can be held up to the test of research. Too many writing tasks ask the student to regard their writing at a great distance, as if poking something vaguely distasteful or even dangerous. Warner’s book encourages students to bring non-fiction writing closer to them, to embrace its complexity, its challenge, and its importance to their own lives.” —Catherine Prendergast, Professor, Dept. of English, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign“Practice? Writer’s practice? Who’s a writer?? You?? Me??? Claiming that everyone is a writer, experienced writer and writing teacher John Warner shares his insights about writing. It’s not magic, but it takes practice—not a list of rules—to write well. He guides novices and even more seasoned writers to think about what they are trying to accomplish, and then how to make it happen. It’s not the usual school-writing, thank goodness, so students and those guiding them will find it refreshing and even, possibly, enlightening. In his I’m-in-love-with-writing approach, Warner can’t be stopped from sharing every trick he’s stumbled upon. We all write. We can all write better. It’s hard, and fun, and will change the way you look at communicating, and possibly the way you think about everything.” —Susan D. Blum, Professor of Anthropology, The University of Notre Dame  “In The Writer’s Practice, writer and writing teacher John Warner confesses: ‘There’s no one right way to write.’ Throughout this how-to volume on nonfiction writing, Warner remains grounded in this paradox by avoiding templates while guiding writers as well as would-be writers and teachers through the questions and problems that all writers navigate in the pursuit of writing well. This book is a gift and everyone learning to write (thus, everyone), or seeking ways to teach writing better, must add this work to their essential bookshelf.” —P.L. Thomas, professor of Education, Furman University, and author of Trumplandia: Unmasking Post-Truth America and Teaching Writing as Journey, Not Destination: Essays Exploring What “Teaching Writing” Means  “While most writing textbooks devote a chapter to the rhetorical situation, John Warner’s The Writer’s Practice is the rare book whose activities center on the idea that good writing responds to the demands of its situation. Presenting a variety of authentic writing tasks, Warner’s book shows students how to adapt their writing to address different audiences, even if that audience is oneself.” —Chris Warnick, College of Charleston
