I have always struggled with writing a resume that grabbed people's attention. I know in this job market, people don't want to see the same thing from each person. And we all know that there are plenty of people who are educated and qualified and have experience and are the ideal candidate. But Paul does a good job at helping you to learn that ways of the resume writing world. I learned so many valuable lessons about writing a resume. The directions and lists of what to do and not do were so easy to follow.Additionally, Paul offers a sense of humor that is not easily found in a book that is supposed to be serious. The techniques ring true and I can't wait to try them on my next resume. However, it wasn't the dry, boring technical jargon that one would assume is found in a resume writing book. The humor makes this an easy read. Anyone who is looking for a job would definitely benefit from reading this book.
One of the major appeals of this book was its casualness and ease of reading. It feels like a well respected friend is giving you sound advice. Of course, this style of writing may not appeal to everyone, but for me it made understanding the process for crafting a successful resume much easier to comprehend and then translate into practice. Additionally, I appreciate that the advice has a large focus on content instead of some books/articles that focus mostly on the technical aspects, such as font type, header size, etc. Highly recommend!
Full disclosure, I did receive a copy for free to provide an honest review. I have read many, many resume creation books in my lifetime. ALL are nothing more than variations of the same ol tried and true formats. THIS book is different. First it adds a bit of humor into a rather dry topic. Second it does in fact shed some light on the reasons why the tried and true doesn't work anymore. If you remember the "rule" of a one page resume and have struggled to decide what of your multiple skills/experiences/successes to squeeze onto that page then read this book and be set free.Being written by a person who's career was to sort through hundreds/thousands of resumes looking for THE right candidate the information provided is an insider look as what works today in the resume world of job search. (including electronic sorting apps that kick out your resume before any human even sees it and how to beat them at their own game)My only confusion was the comment, made a few times throughout the book about the author disliking "Templates" and then he provided a few of his own. Are they good or not? Read the book to find out!All in all I found the information very beneficial to me and others I know personally who are seeking employment. Get the book, read the book, apply the knowledge, get the job!
This guy is brilliant when it comes to teaching people how to create a resume. Upon finishing chapter 1 I immediately became a little stressed out just thinking about my own resume and how much was wrong with it/what I needed to fix moving forward. I flew through this book. The author's commentary was warmly welcomed and his stories were highly entertaining. He is very intelligent and gives great examples of what to do and what not to do. He also goes over important things such as LinkedIn and your elevator pitch. Be sure to create a LinkedIn url that is specific to YOU! The main takeaway that I got from this book is that my resume needs a lot of love if I want my dream job. Making some changes, so...fingers crossed!
This is an very helpful book. I am in the process of updating my own resume right now and this book has helped me to break very old habits of how a resume should be written. It also helped to find out what recruiters are looking for in today's resumes. The only thing is that I wish visual examples would be shown of each section or chapter.
