I am over one third through a first reading of this text. I have a general methodology for reading texts or reference texts. First, a quick read through. Next a read through with note taking. Lastly, a final read through with additional note taking and working of exercises.I bought this text because I am taking a college course in Discrete Structures this Fall, 2011, for my major in Computer Science. The course has no assigned text per se. Hence, the need for a comprehensive text to scare the bejeebers out of me, and get a good, solid grasp of what the topic encompasses. This text definitely does both.This text is considered a one-semester course. It covers basic Number Theory, Probability and Statistics, Cryptography and Cryptanalysis, and much more.Since it includes theory as well as practical exercises for the student, and requires the student to prove some of the theorems, it might be classified as an upper division text for the undergraduate student after completion of a course in mathematical proofs or similar.Regardless, this text challenges me to learn beyond my comfort zone. Yes, it is intimidating. Yes, some of the material is beyond my current training and exposure. And, definitely, YES, I will learn more each time I read and study through it.As I am always looking for texts to become a permanent addition to my library, this text definitely qualifies for permanent status. It will sit very nicely next to my:"The Art of Computer Programming, Volumes 1-4A Boxed Set, Donald Knuth".I believe this text deserves closer examination as a course text or reference text for your library.Respectfully,Michael J. My family in Oregon who just bought a mid-century home are still thanking me for this wonderfully photographed and expansively detailed book on mid-century modern homes, emphasizing their outdoor landscapes. Now I want one similar only detailing Northwest properties over the Palm Springs concentric homes featured here.

As a midcentury person, I have always loved midcentury architecture. I lived near an Eichler neighbor hood and would take the side streets just to see them. Living in Evanston, IL I loved driving Sheridan Road thru “the ravines” to see Ferris Beuhler style homes.I loved that the Intro pages highlighted my home town of Park a Forest, IL. In high school I never knew Ethne to have a green thumb but when she moved to England she found her calling. She has studied all styles of gardens for her books and you can tell she knows what she is showing and talking about.I am going to love reading the rest of the book. And looking at all the pictures again and again.It’s a lovely, fun,

Great book and in great condition! Definitely would recommend for mid-century modern enthusiasts or anyone interested in MCM landscaping.

I wish this book had been available when I was a landscape design student years ago. The weaving together of art, design, architecture, gardens, and social changes in a beautifully written book (with excellent photographs) is amazing. My only reservation is the color of the typeface - it's gray, not black, and makes reading in less than bright light a bit of a challenge. Regardless, I highly recommend it - you won't be disappointed.

Ethne Clarke beautifully captures the style and soul of every garden(er) she meets. Her writing style is elegantly engaging, full of insight, wit and charm. What a gem.
