Excellent book. Easy to read format and very thorough if you are interested in cost estimation you will enjoy it

The other reviewer is right, the FONT IS TINY!!! That being said, the book is written by the experts. You aren't going to find better material anywhere and it's relatively easy to understand.

Content looks superb, ideal for project managers with a technical bent. However, the book is printed in the smallest font I've ever encountered. Some of the diagrams are indecipherable to the naked eye, while subscripts and superscripts are a challenge. After an hour with a magnifying glass in hand, I gave up and returned the book for a refund.

A great book. Very practical, theory only when required, relevant examples. The book is also fun to read.

The content is quite informative and easy to comprehend. Both authors analyze the cost estimation process that normally takes place in the DoD and the public sector in general, but the ideas could also be implemented in the private sector. The Font problem was also solved. Really enjoyed reading it. Totally recommend it.

Font issue resolved! I met the authors in September 2015 at the DOD Cost Analysis Symposium, and ever since the book was released, they had complained to the publishers to fix/increase the font, and they have now done so. The second printing was released early this month and indeed the font size is increased and improved. As for the book, I found it to be well written and very valuable. I have it on my shelf at work!

As usual with Dostoevsky, the read is complex, even in this instance with the simplest of storylines - an old man ranting. The complexity comes from Dostoevsky's amazing ability to articulate the waves of thought behind human emotion - the flood and ebb of reasoning, the articulation of the irrational. But complexity extends well beyond style. Dostoevsky counters and buttresses contemporaneous philosophical thought using the rantings of his protagonist, "the underground man", the narrator. For those not familiar with Søren Kierkegaard and Nikolay Chernyshevsky (and here I admit my own ignorance) even a quick read of the short, but well done Wikipedia article on this title will be a very useful primer. Interestingly, the reviewer mentions that 'underground' is a flawed translation of the Russian and that 'crawl space' (my alternative) or something like it, might be more apt, implying; underneath the structure and within the loathsomeness of darkness, rats, snakes, spiders, and evil spirits.Part I "underground" overwhelms, tediously with rant, still, the reader comes away with a sense of the underground man's misery, frustration, and disgust at life. It is a pure rant with minimal structure. In part II "Apropos the wet snow" we are taken on a - years earlier - 'social encounter' of the underground man. It does not go well - in fact, the reader will now feel, compellingly, albeit without sympathy, the narrator's hatefulness.Dostoevsky's novels so overwhelm with depth and seriousness that other authors on the list of '100 greatest books' (which I am reading through) can seem well behind. In order NOT to be that reviewer who ‘gushes’ 5-stars at everything picked-up - and because this isn’t my favorite Dostoyevski novel I’ll give it 4-stars (but if my arm were twisted - even a little - 5! ;-).(translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, Publisher: Aegitas April 20, 2017)

The first part of the book is phenomenal and timeless. It speaks about how resentment is a part of human nature or maybe how humans will never be satisfied, that it is perhaps ontologically necessary that we cannot experience satiety or fulfillment. I’m not quite sure how to word it, but if you read it for yourself that would be cool, and then you could tell me what it is that I read. I thought the first part was an absolutely brilliant nsight into human natureThe second part is about an angry Russian guy being an angry (and especially miserable) Russian guy. It feels uniquely Russian. I found the second part hard to relate to—probably because I’m not a Russian from the 19th century. But the texture was vivid: I could feel like the spite and the cold wind. Dostoevsky does an amazing job of carefully invoking a vivid image (of something Russian.)

_Notes_ is long on thought and character, and short on incident.In the first (and shorter) part, there are literally _no_ incidents; it consists of a great deal of existential-ish philosophizing and critiquing of society (and of the personality of the narrator, who is never named). Even more, the narrator critiques contemporary scientific utopianism, insisting that, even if human nature were reduced to mathematics, it would still be human nature and perversely inconsiderate of its own best interests; that Man is not a rational animal at all but an emotional animal who demands, above all else, freedom (or its illusion). Man, he says, feels oppressed even by simple mathematics; he wants to be free to declare, when he chooses, that twice two is five.Determinism, he observes, relieves Man of the burden of guilt; Man, he implies, cannot live without it. Implied but never stated (though apparently it was stated in the original text and removed by Russian censors) is that only through faith in Christ can this paradox be overcome.The second part consists, basically, of two sequences of events.In the first, the narrator decides to insult an officer by bumping into him on the street, and eventually does, to no effect.In the second, he invites himself to a party of farewell for a man he doesn't like, gets drunk and behaves badly, berates a prostitute, and makes an ass of himself in front of his servant.Really, at the level of plot, that's about it. It doesn't so much end as is cut off, first by the narrator's claim that he will write no more, then by a fictitious editor's claim that he did, indeed, write more, but that there's no point in continuing.Fortunately, there's a great deal that _isn't_ at the level of plot: deep and detailed analysis of Russian society of the nineteenth century ... which turns out, really, to be analysis not of society, but of the narrator himself, whom we quickly realize is not a reliable or objective speaker. In fact, _Notes_ is a portrait, a portrait of a thoroughly unpleasant and despicable human being; who is, nonetheless, a human being and not some kind of metaphorical cockroach. Even as the narrator demands our despite, Dostoevsky invites us to love him as a perversely damaged image of Christ.

Sage is the right word for Joan Erikson: wife of Erik Erikson and an often "silent partner" to her more famous husband. Joan Anderson, the author of A Walk on the Beach, meets Joan Erikson when she is well into her later years and prior to the death of her husband Erik. Joan Erikson is quite the character: vital, full of wit and wisdom. The two Joans form a close and loving relationship, providing Joan Anderson with a backdrop on which to reconceptualize her own life. This books chronicles their meeting, relationship and Joan Erikson's lasting influence on her. It is a loving tribute to a woman who was extraordinary. After reading this book, however, I do question Erikson's Ninth Stage of Development, which does not seem to truly fit the woman described in the book. She is more vital and does not give in to the despair that the stage seems to indicate.

Another inspirational book by Joan Anderson, one of my favorite authors. Her candor gives me pause. Can I ever learn to be so transparent and honest?

A story about a woman who has raised a family and is now grappling with lack of direction and meaning in her life. She meets an older woman who, through her zest for life and sharing pearls of wisdom, helps her find herself. “You’ve got to remember everything,” she would counsel me, “the highs and the lows. Don’t let them go into the scrap basket just because the moment is over. These are the treasures that you wear for the rest of time. They are meant to be around your neck. As you fondle each pearl, you can say to yourself, ah yes, I remember.”

The two Joans -- Anderson and Erickson -- develop a wonderfully rich friendship as they share the challenges of becoming authentic while discovering the wisdom offered through the various stages of life. Joan Erickson honors her husband by continuing his research and writing regarding developmental stages of life. She shares this richness of discovery with Anderson as they nurture a lasting friendship. Excellent book. I didn't want to put it down and certainly did not want it to end.

I have given this book many, many times to friends. Such an excellent read. Of all of the wonderful books that Joan has written, the wisdom shared between these two “Joan’s” is remarkable. We are here to mentor one another...this lovely book demonstrates not only how, but why it is so important. Thank you, Joan.

This is one of those books that is filled with wisdom -- one that you want to highlight and go back to time and again. Little tid bits of wisdom are scattered thoughout the book. At the end of the book she lists "LIFE LINES JOAN ERIKSON’S UNCONVENTIONAL WISDOM". These are so good to keep handy and review whenever you think of it. We get so busy in our daily lives that we forget the important things. This also shows the importance in our own lives of having a mentor and of also being one to someone else.

Interesting g book about a women’s journey to find herself. More importantly it is a book about a wonderful exciting older woman that encouraged her to express herself and break away from the mold she was in.

I loved the fact that a woman in her 90s could be so spry and informative. This book made me laugh and cry, which is what a good book does. Would recommend it to others.

Excellent history book. So much information, so much details. A great makeup artist is one who knows it's background, and this book will definitely get you started. Got mine new, hardcover.

I bought this as a birthday present for my husband. He had been looking for something like this for a few years but never bought himself one cause he couldn't decide if it'd be worth it, since he was unable to see it in person. It arrived quickly packaged nicely with care instructions. My husband absolutely loves it.

Great book. The used quality was less than expected. It had tears and was covered like a library book. Wish I had known so I might have found something in better condition.

I highly recommend this book. I bought it when I was 14 years old, back in 1997, thinking it was a makeup instructional akin to a Kevyn Aucoin book. What I got instead was even more exciting. The history of makeup in the 20th century. Castelbajac touches briefly on ancient and pre-modern beauty, and starts jumping in for the in-depth stuff at 1900. She discusses makeup and cosmetic technology and how it relates to art, history, music, and technology of the corresponding time period. Accompanied by Hollywood glamour photos, vintage ads, and photos of the creators and products they produced. I can not speak highly enough of this book! One I go back to over and over, and have used many times as a reference when trying to create a period style of my own. Try "Face of the Century" if you are looking for a scholarly author. It will not disappoint.

"The Face of the Century: 100 Years of Make-up and Style" was a wonderful learning experience. It is a non-fiction book about the history of make-up and fashion (mainly make-up). I have always been interested in make-up, fashion, style and things of that nature, so reading this book was very fun and fascinating for me.Besides all the interesting facts in the book, I loved all the photographs included in it. You can read all you want, but to see what lipstick ads looked like in 1930, and to see how the definition of beauty has changed throughout the years was fascinating.I certainly recommend this book to anybody interested in make-up and fashion and/or history.
