This book here is a treasure. Every tattoo artist that does Celtic Irish Gaelic words on people needs this book. Look you don't want to go to Ireland with your groovy tattoo you got down at Myrtle Beach at 3:45 am...who does that?... And have the Hakney driver start laughing at you so hard that he takes you to the local pub to have the locals look and laugh at your tattoo that you thought said "Guns and Roses" in Gaelic and instead you find out it means "I have this Rosey rash near me groin or on me bum"... now most of the county thinks your a Twit. Don't let this happen to you. The book has a number of horror stories and good intentions gone wrong. There is a crash course in how words are put together why you should never believe anything you see on the internet and The best part is the words and Phrases by category that have been double triple checked by a group of Gaelic speakers. Bring it with you when you go to get that tattoo so people will see your message and go "Nice ink". They Also have a Scottish version as well. Now you can get that "Ride to live live to ride" tattoo done correctly!

Clear, concise and correct. As a lover and a sometime teacher of the Irish language, I have been frequently asked to translate an English phrase for use as a tattoo. I always refer them to someone with better Irish because if someone is going to permanently ink something on their skin, it ought to be correct. A small error in spelling or in the placement of the fada can change the meaning of a phrase entirely to something which makes no sense at all. Frequently English expressions become utter nonsense in a literal direct Irish translation. (Avoid Google Translate!) Ms.Nickel's book outlines the pitfalls and presents pages of appropriate translations. Not only for tattoo artists or those contemplating a tattoo. It is also a great resource for language learners who wish to build vocabulary. Tá sé go hiontach.

This is so incredibly excellent and handy! We'll probably use it more for art design than tattoos, but it serves that function admirably, AND comes with an excellent introduction chock-full of historical and cultural context for your use of these Irish phrases. I'd give it ten stars if I could.

This really has almost nothing to do with Tattoos. It is more a correction of grammar for tattoos for those who want to use Irish Gaelic.

Russell Carleton has done a nice job of breaking down various aspects of recent trends in baseball and highlights areas that have yet to be exploited (like sending runners home from 3rd more frequently than what occurs now in sac fly situations). I was particular interested in his deep analysis of a trend every baseball watcher is familiar with - the infield shift. He also did a nice job of examining success in the amateur draft. Yes, there is math involved. But Carleton does a nice job of explaining the how and why behind it so that it isn't too overwhelming for the unfamiliar. Carleton also tackles the parts of the games that listeners often hear commentators discuss, like luck and momentum, and his thoughts are well worth reading.Carleton's insight is augmented by a thoroughly enjoyable writing style. He blends a good mix of humor and personal anecdotes that makes the book easy to dive into for long stretches.Recommended for all baseball fans, especially those interested in advanced stats.Full disclosure: Carleton and I were loosely associated 10 plus years ago as we both wrote for Evan Brunell's Most Valuable Network blogsite. He wrote for Statistically Speaking, while I wrote about the Pirates. I don't recall us having any interaction as my time was mostly spent whining about the state of my favorite team and, since I believe I was the oldest long term writer on the site, I occasionally gave out (somewhat) unsolicited relationship advice on the internal message board. The site was a very fun place to be in the early days of blogs.

First let me say that I hated the first 11% of my kindle book. I almost gave up. DON'T! This is an extremely enjoyable book by a very likeable author whose love for the game is palpable in his stories and writing. He is also a humorist and a psychologist to boot. His purpose is to shed some light on the SHIFT or evolution in baseball thinking which has consumed the sport in the last decade. The Shift does not refer only to the explosion of the defensive shifts in the game, but rather the movement away from the human element to a more data driven game. As a psychologist, the author tries to reconcile them for the game and for the reader's perspective of how and why the game is played today as opposed to twenty years ago.(Think "The Trouble with the Curve" meets "Moneyball". The concepts in the book are not all novel or ahead of the curve, but they are important for the fan to understand. Carleton does a very nice job explaining WAR and emergent value, expected value, and how General managers go about trying to add value to a team so that every possible advantage is gained. He offers proof in the form of statistics for his theories. t's not an easy read and it flies in the face of us old guys' beliefs in certain ideas(steals, bunts, when to run on a sac fly),but it is very thoughtfully written. I am amazed at how granular the sabermetricians have become. They analyze every pitch, every outcome, every out, every hit, and come up with statistical proof to show why bunting a man over to second does not improve run producing percentages. Everything is examined for "what is the expected value of a play or non act". The same is true of a steal. At what point is stealing second base worthwhile in increasing the chances of a run? For example, based on 2017 statistics, unless the runner has better than a 73.94 % of making it safely, it isn't worth trying. When should a runner tag on a sac fly from third base with one out? It turns out, he should go practically every time. One thing I thought was cool was the discussion of whether the KC third base coach should have sent Alex Gordon in the final game of the 2014 WS when there were two outs and Sal perez was up. He makes a persuasive argument based on Perez' OBP during the season and the playoffs that there was a better chance of an errant throw or missed tag than the chance that Perez would drive him home. There is a lot here to digest, including leverage situations for relievers rather than just the bottom of the 9th(a concept used by Francona with Andrew Miller), and the expected extra runs attributable to catchers for good pitch framing based on stats of pitches. Carleton also makes a statistically driven case that defensive shifts may actually do more harm than good. Two other things I found fascinating. First, he produces evidence to show that there is little if no correlation between giving a pitcher three days rest rather than four with a result of fewer injuries. Second, he did a computer simulated season of games to judge whether traditional notions of batting orders made a real difference. Surprise! Only 1.5 runs scored was the difference in the year. The use of bull-penning and high leverage usage of relievers, and the value added by player versatility are discussed, and he debunks some myths including the myth of momentum as an influence on games. So, this is a very helpful, funny and well explained(except for Cox regression) book about the evolution in thinking and the myths still viable in the game. Great job

If you like baseball analytics, this book would be well worth picking up.MLB teams have long picked over all the low-hanging analytics fruit (value of walks and on-base average, defensive metrics), and so Carleton discusses some of the more contemporary hidden sources of value that teams now try to exploit (pitch framing, players that can play multiple defensive positions), etc. Carleton also analyzes various common managerial gaffes (not using elite closers in the ninth inning of tie games), and one of the more interesting sections was a discussion of alternatives to the modern 5 man starting rotation, and why the 5 man rotation will probably not go away any time in the foreseeable future.The author loves to scour data, and he offers lots of little factoids, while not necessarily recipes for building winning baseball teams, will be interesting to people who take their baseball seriously. One interesting example was an analysis of 0-1 counts. It is well known of course that pitchers gain a tremendous advantage simply by getting the count to 0-1, but Carleton shows that batters who get to 0-1 by fouling off a pitch fare much better in the at-bat than do hitters who swing and miss at strike one or who take strike one. This is a very plausible hypothesis, but it's interesting to see the data behind it as well.Really my only complaint about the book is that the title suggests that there will be much more analysis of the shift than is actually done (about one chapter of the book is solely dedicated to the shift). One very interesting conclusion the author reaches is that the effectiveness of the shift has decreased in recent years, in part because of an uptick in walk rates when the shift is on. The author also uses game theory to determine when and how often players should consider bunting to an empty half-infield when some of the more extreme shifts are used.For better or worse, the author doesn't get too bogged down in the mathematics behind the analysis. He throws out fancy terms like Cox regression and logistic regression, but there's little discussion of the gory details or how an interested reader could go about duplicating his findings. Presumably, this is to keep the book layman friendly, but I suspect a good part of the target audience might like to see some of the details here a little more flushed out.

Still reading this book. Hard to put down so I would say buy it you will enjoy it.

This is the second in the series I've read and the only character that is from the first book is the keeping of the watch, and is a stand alone. The author does a good job of explaining how the watch works to the one who accepts it. I must admit I did enjoy book one more.I didn't feel a great connection to the H/h as I did in the first book. The H was a womanizer of the first order and all he wanted was to get the h to bed. It wasn't until the end of the book that he wants more from her than her being his mistress. Hard to fell a connection to the H when you don't respect him.There is lovemaking, within marriage and mildly described. Heat level maybe 2.5-3 if that out of 5.There is one suspenseful scene, one villain, no Highland fight scenes either. There are some editing errors too.The blurb explains what the story is about better than I can, so I am just explaining what you may discover reading it. We have no cheating, no cliffhanger for our couple. I did enjoy there was an epilogue 24 years in the future and we get HEA. (ljb)

With the help of the mysterious pocket watch and an old woman named Gertrude, she finds herself transported to 1279 and learns the true meaning of healthcare, life and love.On the flipside, I would love to see a short novella about Elsie, the young woman who travelled forward in time.Thank you, Ms. Giltenan, for a great reading escape!

Dr. Elizibeth Quinn Dr, no not that oneBurned out and disenchanted she poured her troubles out to a gentle old woman on a plane ride gave her a chance to be the healer she dreamed of being. A simple pocket watch and a magic word sent her back to the 1300's. All she had to do was say the word in sixty days to come back to the present. James Bond? rumplestiltskin what was that word, Love and laugher and a place to belong, A poor memory may not be a bad thing,.I had been given this book in return for an honest review.the writing is fantastic. The story line is wonderful. Watching Dr Quinn juggling the 21st century knowledge in the 14th century is fun.The story is fun, sweet and clean.

I would recommend you this book because, it gives you a sense of the past and anyone interested in health-care is always interested in how our love of med line have evolved thru the centuries.I enjoyed the love the families showed each other.Also how the stood by each other in times of stress.

What a very delightful blend of the past and the present! Cecil Giltenan never disappoints and has captivated my attention with this wonderful book! In-depth characters, a creative paranormal romance with a twist, and all set in the beauty and majesty of Scotland. Paul Woodson is a very talented and skilled narrator as well. I have bought and listened to many of his audio book recordings and enjoyed his professionalism and talent every time. This is one I'd recommend to anyone. The romantic scenes were written and performed very tastefully. Now, on to the next book in the series. 😀

Another sweet time travel romance by this author with the formula I love the most. Elizabeth is a doctor and is swept back in time to meet the very handsome heir to the Laird Cade in Scotland in the 1200's. Elizabeth is a busy and disillusioned Obstetrician who doesn't get to know and spend time with her patients. She meets our old friend from the first book Gertrude who has the ability to time travel and offers her to time travel into the body of Elsie who is about to die. She takes of the offer and lands Clan Macrae as Elsie the niece of the clan's healer and is asked to lie to go the Clan Mackenzie to help with Cade's stepmother's pregnancy. She went along with this because she knew she could help.Elizabeth has the usual issues in her new time such as riding a horse. Cade is suspicious of "Elsie" but goes along with the plan. During their trip back to Mackenzie land she and Cade build a friendship and an attraction. Elsie is mouthy and funny maybe too much so for a girl in that time but he likes it. Both Cade and Elsie are likable characters and the romance believable all except Cade is an upper class heir of the Laird and Elsie is just a midwife.What works the best for me is the attraction that they share but Elsie holds strong to her beliefs that she won't go further than an innocent (or maybe no so innocent kiss) because she would never get in a relationship that she has to call her partner "Sir". Cade explained that yes he couldn't marry her but basically she could be his mistress because he has strong feelings for her. Well Elsie won that argument because she decided to try to stay away from Cade and he did not like it one bit. There is one love scene that is explained as "2 Shades of Grey instead of 50 Shades of Grey" and I would agree with that. Much more PG than R but their chemistry is sweet and steamy.The last part of the book has an adventure to help Elsie become one of Clan MacKenzie and this part was a bit slow pace and predictable for me. However, the whole story is a predictable but tried and true formula that I love in Time Travel Romance.

Let me start by saying I have been an Amazon customer for twenty years and I have *never* reviewed anything before. But I consider this book to important for me to keep my mouth shut. It was a life-changer for me. Don't know why some reviewers are saying it is not helpful for people with severe depression - maybe some people with severe depression need a different approach, but let me speak for the rest of us. I was having suicidal thoughts, and on the highest doses of meds available. I was also in therapy. I tried two different therapists, both of whom wanted to talk about other people in my life - my parents, my husband, etc. - which was not helping me at all. I was at my wit's end, really scared that I was going to hurt myself if things didn't get better soon, when a friend recommended this book. You have to do the exercises - yes, they seem silly, but if they work, who the heck cares? Get a nice little notebook and a pen that you enjoy writing with. I made mine a sort of journal that I doodled in and added little inspirational quotes here and there. And yes, it is deceptively simple. Again, who cares? If standing on my head and whistling "Dixie" would have made me feel this much better, I'd be doing that, too. I started reading the book a month ago. I do not do all the excercises, but I did try all of them. I do what works for me. It's also true that there is the usual filler crap that you get in self-help books "Janet is a 40-year old dental assistant who came to me in 2005 suffering from..." blah, blah, blah. Just skip it. My depression is so much better that I am shocked. I am no longer thinking about suicide, and I am actually able to picture a future that is not completely empty and black. A future!!!!!! I have not had a future in years! I can't express what that means to me, but if you have depression, I don't have to. Try the book. If it doesn't work, I hope you will try something else, and keep on trying. You are not alone, and you deserve to be happy.

The ideas in this book are so simple, yet so powerful. We all have an inner voice (the Buddhists call it "monkey mind") that creates thoughts in our brain. These thoughts then make us feel a certain way. In knowing that our thoughts create how we feel, we can drastically improve the quality of our lives.This book shows that it's not what happens to us in life, it's what we think about it.For example, say you lose your job. Many people would then catastrophize and think negative thoughts about how awful it was, how we're going to be homeless and go broke and then we get depressed. Instead of thinking like that, we should think realistically about how it's tough that we lost our jobs, but we'll eventually find another one and that we will overcome the current crisis.I was a pessimist for years. Negative thinking becomes a habit and changes brain chemistry. By thinking more realistically and talking back to our negative thoughts, we can live much happier lives.

Once you start reading this book, you will start to feel better. If you suffer with depression, this book is better than any prescription I have tried.It deals with the here and now, and teaches you how to understand your own negative contribution to your depression, and it gives you several tools with which you can assess where you are at, how you talk to yourself, how you interpret others, and how to regain control over that narrative.Best book that I have ever read. It made a difference just reading, but much more so by using the knowledge and tools that Dr. Burns provides in the book. I bought copies for friends and family who have also had learned how to feel better and even feel good.I would give it 6 stars if I could

It changed my life. For 15 years I WAS anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications, after reading this book, and doing the Cognitive Behavior Therapy exercises, I was able to wean myself off meds completely.

Unfortunately, I've had to grapple with anxiety and depression most of my life. But you work with the hand you were dealt, am I right?On top of meds and therapy, I've amassed quite a collection of self-help books, some better than others. I try to be proactive in dealing with my business; I feel that's super important in helping deal with mental and emotional problems. For anxiety, I've found that books on mindfulness meditation to be quite helpful. For depression, stuff that emphasizes CBT is effective.That's why I like this book. It's written well, although some bits seem a bit dated (an example in the book of something that might irritate you is when you use your last dime at a payphone and the call drops and you don't get your money back. Little things like that pop up here and there in the book, but don't detract from the important things).I use some of the exercises in this book with a therapist which is helpful. There are exercises where the author asks you to write out things instead of mentally reviewing things. I agree with that recommendation. It helps solidify concepts and organize your thoughts.The book is written well, and in a conversational way. I found there were many times the author explained something that made me say 'Yeah, that's me! If I'm being honest, that's how I think and what it really means!'Hopefully you'll like it. Do the exercises, be honest in the exercises, and if you see a therapist try working through this stuff with them. My therapist knew who this author was right away and was familiar with his work.It's one of the few books like this that I own that I go back and review periodically.
