Less scholarly than I expected. The forward discusses the Council of Jamnia and its role in creating the Jewish canon. However, councils were a Christian invention and were unknown in Judaism. Furthermore, Jamnia did not decide upon the canon. This egregious error ruined the entire volume for me.

Worth buying if anyone is interested in deeper understanding of Apocrypha parts of the Bible!

One of the great services that InterVarsity Press has given us is a wide range of collections centered on the ancient Christians. These series, such as the series on the Creeds and this voluminous set, provides for modern Christians a touchstone to the past, a hallmark of those who have gone before. In doing so, they shed light on modern beliefs that `have always been.'Billing itself as a `Christian Talmud' (Oden, Introduction xii), it contains passages of scripture (pericopes) with commentary by the patristic writers. The passages are given in the Revised Standard Version (unless textual variants require the use of the Latin), following the order and the versification of the RSV. Further, the arrangement of the books in this volume follow the RSV as well. While not all books (such as 1st Maccabees) is included, namely because ancient writers rarely if at all quoted from them, the more well know are, such as Wisdom, Sirach and Tobit.The importance of these volumes resides not in the introductions, overviews, and histories provided, but in the author sources which are used. These volumes go beyond the normal name to include those Christians who are less known, but no less important. We have the standards like Clement of Rome, Augustine and Irenaeus but we have those not commonly cited in the West such as John Cassian. We also have unknowns (to me) such as Hesychius, Isaac of Nineveh, a few pseudo's, and even Fastidiosus. There are Elders, such as Salvian, and popes, such as Leo the Great. Victor of Vita and some Anonymous Italians join the list as well. As does Didymus the Blind and his teacher, Origen. The Julians Three make the list - of Eclanum, Pomerius and Africanus. Even the Spaniard, Leander of Seville makes the index of authors. And it goes on and on and on... with names that I wouldn't dare to pronounce out loud and some I even give up on before I think it.The volumes include pericopes of passages, overviews, and topical arrangements per book. For this volume, a history of the Septuagint and an overview of the Apocryphal books are included as well. This serves to introduce, if needed, the readers to what they are about to read. It has not always been that these books were roundly excluded from Christian discourse, but have been used, some more than others, to help determine matters of the Church.Each volume is large, and this one no different. Coming in at 540 pages worth of material, the fifteenth volume in the Old Testament series provides a much need review of early Christian writers and how they used the hidden books to bring to light Christian values, doctrines and dogma.

Recently I taught through the books of the Apocrypha at our Adult Sunday School class. This was one of the books I used to help put my notes together. The other was the excellent Introducing the Apocrypha: Message, Context, and Significance. Eventually the class lectures led to me writing and publishing The Rest of the Bible, which is a devotional overview of these books.I have several volumes of this series of commentaries and have mixed feelings about the various volumes. The impetus and intention of this project is admirable and needed, but at times the selected passages and authors seems questionable. Maybe I am asking too much, because the challenge to gather commentary from the various works of the Church Fathers is a daunting one. Of all the volumes I have read, the Genesis volume is by far the best.The major disappointment with this volume is the lack of any commentary on the books of the Maccabees. Perhaps they are planning a part 2 or including that as a separate book. The Fathers quote Maccabees often, so there is no lack of material.The portion of this book is the comments on Tobit. That alone is worth the cost of the volume.

The Ancient Christian Commentary puts out the original writings of the early church fathers. It is one of the most valuable set of books for understanding Scripture as well as for understanding the foundations of the Christian faith. This book is in excellent condition and helps complete my entire set. Thank you.

Kassabova's personal history, like her country's, is full of complex characters and overwhelming challenges; one of her grandfathers, she realized later, was a homosexual struggling in a country that forbade it, and Kassabova herself developed teenage anorexia: "If you can't do anything to the world around you, you do it to yourself." Kapka Kassabova has written a superb book that I highly recommend to anyone interested in good writing, Bulgaria, Eastern Europe, life under Communism, the rich history and mystifying mythology of that area of the world. It has an intimate quality about it that makes her personal reflections about her life, family and country poignant, totally captivating and universally appealing. Don't be fooled by the sad quality of the opening chapters on her childhood. The narrative builds as her tour of her country progress through her journey to all the places in her memory and through the geography and history of one of the oldest and most complex places in Europe. She returned from a 14 year exile and world travel to find her roots, or what is left of them, in her place of birth. Full of memorable stories, her story of meeting a woman survivor of the communist era concentration camps during one of her many train rides was most remarkable. The woman characterizes the camp as being like the ones that the Nazi's had. Then she qualifies that by saying that the Holocaust was really over-stated and that it never really happened. Why do you care about Jews, she asks Kapka. Are you a Jew? The ironies and complexities of our past rise to the top throughout this fine volume. I don't know if Kassabova found the peace in her soul that she was searching for, but she certainly provides a soulful experience for anyone who reads this book.

This is the author's personal reflection of her life in Bulgaria under the last 2 decades of socialism and a trip to revisit places of personal importance for her 20 years later. While the account of life under socialism is very accurate, it has a darker hue, which may not be shared by other people who lived in those times there. Yet, it is a personal reflection, of a child growing up in the ugly panel block suburbs, in a young family who struggled to create a normal life and home, while managing two careers and two young daughters. Despite the darker hue of the pictures I find the account lovable with its honesty and sense of humour. The account of the journey 20 years later is also delightful and honest. A highly recommended book for anyone interested in Bulgaria.

This is a beautifully written nostalgic tour through the author and Bulgaria's history. Humorously sharing stories from her Cold War childhood, Kassabova recounts her past and current travels throughout the country. Never mocking, but always with an honest eye, she shares the varied histories of the towns and the people she encounters along the way.

A really interesting perspective on Bulgaria. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as an introduction to the complxity of the country and it's people. I started reading this book on the plane into Sofia, and many of Kapka's observations ring true. (including my baggage being lost!!) a very readable insight into Bulgaria.

5 stars though the translation was a little awkward. Beautiful funny political heartbraking and heartwarming all in one. Thank you Kapka.

This is an eastern european travelogue from the point of view of an ambivalent expatriate returning home, which gives an added dimension compared to travelogues of interested foreigners like, say, Rebecca West. (There's a point when the narratives of this book and "Black Lamb and Grey Falcon" almost touch, in the chapter dealing with Macedonia.)The first and more autobiographical half of the book was often quite poignant, as were the later parts in which the author visits her ailing, lonely relatives and the places of her youth.

This book of coming of age after the fall of communism in Bulgaria was fascinating. I enjoyed it tremendously,although once I moved to Bulgaria I found that many Bulgarian criticized it for the author's accuracy. That said, memoir is told from one's individual experience, as they interpret it. Overall, I think this is a fine book, by a fine writer.

Having just visited Bulgaria, I found this memoir very interesting. The author describes growing up in authoritarian communist Bulgaria and the country seen through the same eyes on her return as a much travelled young woman. Well written and it helps one understand so much more than the guide books tell.

Another great book for new traders in forex, repeats the intros into forex that many books do but also starts looking at simple strategies to get you going. I think its well worth while reading and Kathy is obviously a very successful trader and can be called an authority on trading forex. She has a different view on setting profit targets for trades as opposed to say Jim Brown in his book, but its well worth considering her approach if your psychology suits it. I think its worth reading this a few times.

As the book title 'little' this is indeed a very brief intro in the world of forex - a lot of anecdotal stories and not many strategies to speak of.The book's chapter titles will tell you the cliche'd nature of the writing - chapter 3 A's to Z of forex, chapter 6 - investor vs trader, chapter 11 top 10 mistakes.There are 20 pages of decent writing - and it's about the bollinger bands and a strategy that I have actually never read before.Chapter 8 which covers value investing strategy based on the double bollinger bands and Chapter 9 which covers trading the news.Chapter 8 is a good strategy to have in your arsenal, and this one chapter pretty much will make your 10 bucks a worthy investment. Chapter 9 is fairly similar to all the other trading news strategies out there, with her own opinion of how you should take trades based on how strong the prevailing sentiment is.

As someone new to trading, the whole Forex jargon was simply overwhelming for me. After visiting a few websites and blogs that specialize in Forex market coverage, I had to start from the basics. That's when I started looking for books which were well-received by people who are new to Forex domain. After checking out several book reviews and read quite a few samples I decided to purchase this and it was a correct decision. Felt like the first profitable trade I made - since there is so much to learn and take away in this book.I was hooked from page one and completed reading this in around 2 days. Now when I read blogs or visit websites which talk about Forex I have a fairly decent idea about what the discussion is about and it helps me grasp the concepts and get new ideas. As they say - "To learn a new skill, your fundamentals should be solid" and this books will certainly help a lot of beginners to get on a solid footing.

I have been learning Currency Trading for a few years now and mostly the book confirmed what I already knew (which is always good to confirm I am on the right track), but, it also gave me some additional insight into trading the currency market.

Excellent introductory book to trading the forexes. Very down-to-earth and highly understandable. It does not provide a great many specific trade strategies but does cover the basics of forex trading quite well.

Really enjoyable book, great gift material at a super good price.Only two comments that are negative - the size is a little strange (kind of short and squatty) and the back has a large sticker on it, describing what's inside. It seems very 'anti-southern' having such a nicely bound book to have a huge sticker stuck on the back (including the price!). Try and take it off - it'll rip into a thousand pieces and leave a sticky gunk.

Sweet tea, cluckensteins, BBQ and Hermes = the American South.This was a Daily Deal and it caught my interest-and I proceded to read it in two days. It's that engaging, but the upside is you can also read it bit by bit as it's well curated into themes with different columns/essays by certain folks in each field.In many ways, the "American South" as it's often portrayed is equal parts reality, myth, and legend. This book does its best to distill those elements into what is the 21st century American south. While I'm not sure every woman really need an Hermes scarf or monogrammed stationary, this is a good look into why things are just a little bit different south of the Mason-Dixon line. Maybe it's sweet tea in the blood?Warning, do not read when hungry.

Cheaply made book for too much money. For Southerners this book is preaching to the choir, they know all that by heart. It is dated, I have 13 Hermes scarves that I could not give away at this point.For transplants it neglects a few essential areas such as : Religion - just pretend. Lying - learn to do it with a straight face. Politics - pretend you are a political Virgin, let them court you for a decade or two until you know who your friends are. For women - marry an educated Southerner and keep him alive. On race - do not let white Southerners know that you believe all people are created equal.I am a transplant from Germany 50 years ago. I love the South but not unconditionally.

Now, I'm a "Damn Yankee," the kind that started to pass through, but ended up staying. So, although I learned a few things ( I've been in the South a while now) from the guide, I did find parts of it precious and whiny, almost like a spoiled child. Culture, arts, and hard-working salt-of-the-earth people do exist in other parts of the country, you know. So, if you're from the South, you will be moved to say "amen" a lot. If you are not, you will need a while shaker of salt, because a grain won't be enough. Will never understand the near life-and-death importance of football (weddings are planned around important games), but I do love the bourbon.

This was an excellent book on southern living.It put in perspective and explained some of the things I experienced but did not fully understand.And it discussed the different regions of the south, including language differences.I loved this book and a great read..

Love the book, great read! Beautiful front cover. Only issue i have with it is the stuck a gigantic white sticker on the back outside cover which looks horrible. I tried to remove it and it tore the cover. I would have given it a higher rating if they have not put this on the back side. Very disappointed.

Such a fun read. Took the Mint Julep recipe for watching the Kentucky Derby. Got our palettes and minds ready for our trip to coastal Georgia.A good book for sharing.

Good read and very amusing. The author is definitely familiar with living in the South. Any one fortunate enough to be relocating to the South should pick this up as it will give you some heads up to the unique requirements to survive socially in the South.

Truth and Method is one of the most important works of philosophy of the 20th century, and this revised translation by Weinsheimer and Marshall is the authoritative translation. I give both the work and the translation a 5+ star rating. This edition, however, has mistakes all over the place; they obviously scanned the pages of the Continuum edition and did little to no proof reading. (For example, key German terms are misspelled.) The font is also horrible and the line spacing is weird; and there are no margins to write in. Spend the money and buy the Continuum edition.

This is one of those great moments where a great student follows his master (Heidegger) yet gives us a new product and not simply a repetition of his master. In short, for Gadamer language is the horizon of being. As Kant was wrong to seek a thing-in-itself, so we also should beware of a "meaning-in-itself."Gadamer begins and ends his work on a strange note: the aesthetics and interpretation of art. It’s not that art determines how we interpret text, but art allows Gadamer to illustrate (no pun intended) the tension given that great works of art are considered “timeless,” yet they were produced in historical, finite circumstances. This tension points to the horizon, a key Gadamerian term.Every experience has implicit horizons of before and after and finally fuses with the continuum of experiences present in the before and after to form a unified flow of experience (246). Df. horizon = not a rigid boundary but something that moves with and invites one to advance further. Everything that is given as existent is given in terms of a world and hence brings the world horizon with it. As a horizon phenomenon “world” is essentially related to subjectivity, and this relation means also that it exists in transciency.”Hermeneutical circle: possesses an ontological positive significance. We have already fore-projected before we even approach the text. This creates an openness which situates our meaning with other meanings. Understanding is a participation in the event of tradition and not so much a subjective act (302).Horizons are temporally-conditioned. Time is not a gulf to be crossed by a supportive ground in which the present is rooted. We cannot stand outside of our situation. “All self-knowledge arises from what is historically pre-given, what Hegel calls “substance’” (313). Horizon: every finite present has its limitations. Every situation represents a standpoint that limits the possibility of vision. Horizons move with us. When we understand something, we fuse the horizons between text and interpreter. Fusion of horizons: We regain concepts of a historical past in such a way that it also includes our own comprehension of them (382).This will go down as one of those truly great books. Ground-breaking works. It’s not super-hard to read simply because it is well-written. However, he does presuppose a good bit of Hegel and Heidegger, so keep that in mind.A note about the reprint: I have the Bloomsbury edition and the text is fine. SHucks, I even got mine used. Yes, the spine willl crease when you read it, but that's true of most books. The spine, though, will not break.

Gadamer's Truth and Method is a long, dense, and richly informative effort to find a solid and rational basis for understanding in the human sciences or Geistenwissenschaften. Gadamer proceeds from the observation that efforts to adapt experimental methods used in the natural sciences, as well as sophisticated statistical models employed with less success but with just as much commitment to rigor in economics and related disciplines are, by their very nature, ill-suited to his objective. Gadamer is, of course, correct, though he puts himself in a position that die-hard proponents of quantitative techniques and the mathematical expression of lawfulness judge to be hopelessly problematic. Nevertheless, Gadamer persists. Whether or not he succeeds is inevitably a judgment call, but I'm inclined to view his efforts as fruitful, providing a persuasive methodological foundation for research in disciplines wherein well-informed interpretation necessarily takes the place of model building and testing.Gadamer's book, first published in 1960, represents a lifetime of scholarship, covering western philosophy from the ancient Greeks to the time of Truth and Method's publication. Gadamer's mastery of material pertinent to his task has rightly been characterized as encyclopedic, but it is also suitably focused, especially through application of the hermeneutic method, broadly speaking. With regard to questions such as what does it mean to be a thinking, feeling human being who actively interprets and contributes to creating the circumstances that give life meaning, Gadamer proposes that we seek a thorough understanding of the tradition of which we, as socially created entities, are manifestations.Without trivializing Gadamer's conclusions or misinterpreting their methodological and substantive import, it seems reasonable to conclude that he is referring to a process that is conspicuous in the social sciences, especially as understood by ethnographers, namely socialization in linguistically rich environments. Each of us is born and raised in an historically specific time and place that can reasonably be construed as having an interpretable shared culture, an ensemble of prescriptions, prohibitions, commonplace explanations, ways of making inferences, and modes of understanding to which consociates refer in making sense of what it means to be. Emile Durkheim's concept of the collective conscience and George Herbert Mead's generalized other are products of socialization into a specific socio-cultural milieu and can be construed as closely approximating tradition as Gadamer understands that idea. In a more critical vein, a similar claim can be made for Antonio Gramsci's concept of cultural hegemony. Thus, in Gadamer's view, "history does not belong to us; we belong to it. Long before we understand ourselves through the process of self-examination, we understand ourselves in a self-evident way in the family, society, and state in which we live" (Gadamer, 1998: 276). The language we use in understanding ourselves, moreover, in not merely a tool that we use, language is constitutive of being human.Research with reference to an identifiable tradition, a specific collective consciousness or generalized other is best done interpretatively, through application of historical methods or qualitative anthropological techniques to achieve hermeneutic understanding of the varying conditions of life as they are experienced and understood by concrete human beings. Given this orientation to making sense of one's place in the world, growing interest in historical and, especially, ethnographic applications and the consequences of their use has produced a good deal of contemporary interest in Gadamer's work and in hermeneutics generally.Gadamer has been challenged by Habermas and others as being insufficiently specific as to the meaning of tradition. In this critical view, complex modern societies are not characterized by one stable and homogeneous tradition shared by all. Instead, divisions such as class, race, ethnicity, native tongue, and religion assure a multiplicity of different and changing traditions for any time and place.While there is merit to this critique, I think it is often overdrawn, ignoring the fact that Gadamer's approach is readily applicable to co-existing but varied socio-cultural configurations for any time and place. Were we to completely discount Gadamer's approach for the reasons given by Habermas, we would also be obliged be reject Max Weber's use of ideal-typical analysis of social systems; an unlikely event, indeed.Truth and Method requires a substantial commitment of time and effort, and Gadamer devotes a lot of attention to failed alternatives to his hermeneutic approach to establishing truth in the human sciences. The book itself is terrible quality. It's required reading for one of my classes, and many of my classmates' books are falling apart. Mine has fallen apart into three separate pieces.Not recommended if you plan to write in the book (although practically impossible in such small margins).The text can be pretty dry (and there's nothing wrong with that) but it's as if the font tries to beg that it's not, and that's a little conflicting when trying to read it.

This version has many, many typos. It looks like it was never proofed. Just get the other version...this one is not the best. Plus, the font makes you want to gouge your eyes out.
