About the Author

For the past half century, Stan Fischler has covered the Ney York subway scene more intensively than any Big Apple journalist-in print and on radio and television. He began his career as subway editor of the New York Journal-American in 1955 and remained on the transit beat for a decade. In addition to his writings on subways, Fischler has also been active on the television side. He wrote and helped produce ten features on New York's system called, "Subway Series," which won prizes for writing and production. Apart from his work in the transportation area, Fischler is renowned in local and national sports circles as "The Hockey Maven," and is recognized as one of the most outspoken authorities on the game of hockey. Fischler's first job out of Brooklyn College was as Rangers' publicist during the 1954-55 season. It was the first of many hockey-related positions for Fischler, who has since covered hockey either in print or on the air for more than 45 years. Fischler, who resides in Manhattan with his wife Shirley, holds a master's degree in Education from Long Island University and has taught news and feature writing at Queens College, Columbia University and Fordham University.

This book was published as part of the official centennial of the New York Subway system back in 2004, but it differs from the traditional history book approach. Instead of a dry and linear recitation of facts and figures from 1904 to 2004, Fischler weaves in his own lifetime of memories of riding the rails from borough to borough. His personal recollections range from watching the construction of a subway station literally under his own house as a six-year old during the extension of one of the lines, making family pilgrimages to relatives' houses, Broadway plays and various sporting events, all the way to taking his own children to the Subway Museum in Brooklyn as they grew up.The book is filled with many old photographs of stations, elevated lines and all of the versions of rolling stock that have been a part of the first one hundred years. Although the book seems to jump around from topic to topic and is sometimes hard to follow, the personal anecdote-style gives it a warmth not matched in many historical reviews. If you have a love for the New York Subway system, you are sure to enjoy this book from a native New Yorker and lifetime straphanger.

Mr. Fischler, when you get a chance to edit this, please add on every chapter heading, the borough. No one starts with page one. We skip around first and we don't have your encyclopedic knowledge of locations. Also, map a little legend supered on each photo, an indicator symbol of the approximate NESW direction, the year if you know it, and the borough. It would make the experience of reading the book even more enjoyable, if that is possible! Thank you for what is obviously a great gift to us.

I am 34 years old and have struggled with addiction for the past 15 years. It culminated with the loss of job, home, large retirement savings, many friends and family. I studied extensively to try to figure this stuff out on my own but continued to fail. Mind you i have numerous professional accreditations, degrees, and am of very high intelligence.Many of my friends referred to me as the "smartest and dumbest person they'd ever met." It was a weird statement to take pride in but I did as I knew it to be true. I simply could not abstain from drunken or drug induced outrageous behaviors including arrests, wild sexual parties, expensive damage to professional and personal reputation. It plagued every relationship I entered to the point where I became infamous.I entered a 90 day treatment facility and benefitted from some of the stuff we did there but if i ran the cost/benefit analysis or measured it based on the time commitment the results were pathetic. Most of this was due to the sheer insanity of the 12 step mentality, and the bogus "disease model of addiction" which i knew going into treatment was based on faulty reasoning and industry profits.This book walks you through all the stages of addiction studies and why they are inaccurate and then targets the true underlying causes of addiction. It tells the merits of rehab and 12 step based groups then provides valuable insight as to what these groups lack. An absolute must read for anyone serious about beating addiction.

When I read the first chapter, I had the feeling like I could have written it. I am a psychologist who worked with parolees, and when I'd get a referral involving a substance abuser, it would be as a last resort, after traditional AA programming had failed. The philosophy in this book works, & I have seen it work many times.

This book is of course, correct. It rightfully debunks the myth that god-programs of the 12 steps come even close to qualifying as "treatment." But people have been debunking this myth for decades now, and I've seen nothing change. The U.S. "treatment" centers are still overwhelmingly based in faith-healing, even though faith-healing has long since fallen out of fashion as a type of legitimate treatment. For every other medical issue, we do not tell people to get better by praying to the skydaddy to rescue them, yet this is what the 12 steps are based upon. I'm frustrated reading the same work over and over again, and seeing nothing change.The Sober Truth is accurate, full of explanations as to why god-programs and faith-healing do not work (what a shocker!) and contains some interesting personal stories. But this book is not ground-breaking or full of particularly new information; indeed, the most sober truth about the matter is the sad fact that a book like this still needs to be written and read, because the U.S. is so stubbornly steadfast in its make-believe ideas that addiction is a moral failing marked by "character defects" and the solution is a-higher-power-god-skydaddy-rescuer. No wonder addiction is an epidemic in this country.

In 160 pages of text, don’t expect this book to be a literature review of studies relating AA to treatment receptivity and treatment outcome, although it does offer some representative examples. I found The Sober Truth less of a polemic against AA than Rational Recovery. Both books seriously undermine AA claims to effectiveness and minimization of its religious underpinnings. The Sober Truth further overviews the marketing of AA by its proponents to the front lines of popular treatment without much empirical evidence to support its efficacy.Until I read this book I did not know that AA took its famous twelve steps directly from a fundamentalist religious organization founded in the early twentieth century. I did not know that Bill W. even after he stopped drinking was a heavy consumer of cigarettes and coffee, was serially unfaithful to his marital partner and experimented with hallucinogenics. I did not know E.M. Jellinek, the originator of the disease model of alcoholism, eventually distanced himself from the conceptualization. I did not know that five US circuit Courts of Appeals ruled against mandatory referral to twelve-step-based treatment on the basis that there is “no doubt” that AA meetings are “intensely religious events.”As a practicing psychologist with over thirty years of experience, I’ve certainly seen AA proponents and detractors along the way, including a subgroup of proponents who recoil at the religious infrastructure. Moreover, I am attuned to the paucity of adequately designed research published in peer-reviewed journals after the 70+ years AA has been around that demonstrates utility much above chance levels. Even the COMBINE study published by JAMA in 2006 comparing medical management (e.g., naltrexone) with “combined behavioral intervention” lumps “twelve-step facilitation” with cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and support system involvement rather than as a stand-alone treatment. If it is so effective, why is it not considered as an independent variable? The fact is it is not very effective as a stand alone intervention with success rates estimated between 5-10%. Even “success” is variously defined. Is it percentage of days abstinent from baseline? Is it the reduction of drinks per day?The authors propose an alternative approach to understanding and treating alcoholism. They assert the psychological function of addiction is to reverse a sense of overwhelming helplessness and that every addictive act is a substitute for more direct behavior. The reversal of helplessness is a function of addiction and the powerful drive behind addiction is rage at that helplessness. Alcoholism is treated as a displacement (substitute behavior) that can be reversed through psychodynamic psychotherapy aimed at understanding, managing, and learning about oneself so the direct action can be undertaken without being seen as either impossible or forbidden. Addiction as a misguided quest for empowerment is possible, even plausible. However, these assertions are offered without proof, without citations from peer-reviewed journals – suffering from the same weaknesses with which the authors indict AA. Anecdotal data is weak data prone to selection bias, accuracy limitations of self-report, mistaking correlation for causation, among many other things that limit its utility. Maybe that is in one of their other books. In this book, case study method offered (P. 157) as “the only way to describe [psychodynamic] treatment” would be anecdotal as well.I quibble with the authors’ contention (P. 124) that any AA group should be interchangeable with another AA group if the twelve steps were the active treatment components for addiction. Any psychotherapist who has done theme-based groups (e.g., divorce groups) or treatment-based groups (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy) understands each group has its own “personality” regardless of conceptual constancy because of the different personalities involved..Any treatment of alcoholism and other addictions may be considered successful if the individual lives a life in which there are no longer negative consequences, broadly defined, as a result of the behavior whether abstinence or temperance is achieved.Would you take a medicine wherein ~69% discontinued use due to unacceptable side effects within a year and only 5 to 10% of those who used the medication found relief from symptoms – a rate not appreciably different from spontaneous remission (those who discontinue substance abuse without treatment)? That is the analog to AA as well as the question posed by this book.

15 pages for $9.99? Un-freaking-believable. This should not be labeled a guide or a book.. more like a pamphlet. I am outraged that I spent money on it at all.

Don't buy this. Rip off. No index is provided so you buy it and end up with less than 15 pages on this complete book. Waste of money.

I read this for free with Kindle Unlimited. If I had paid $9.99 for it, I'd be very angry. There are 14 short pages of text. Of those, two are an introduction about the author. One full page gives advice like never go out alone, dress warmly, and bring snacks for photo outings. On another page, we are told not to set up our cameras in an area where mountains block the sky, and it's best to be in a flat area with mountains in the distance. Oh, okay. The only technical information given is basic camera settings for f-stop, bracketing exposures, and a few odds and ends of that sort. This is helpful advice you can quickly find for free online or figure out easily for yourself with minimal trial and error. The author actually sounds like quite a nice person. I have to think it is pure youthful inexperience that would make him think his scanty advice is worth any money. But it's still wrong to ask ten dollars for a few general hints. And very wrong to call this little booklet a "complete guide."

Made for 5th graders, with a chance it might be rejected by them. There are beautiful you tube videos that are for free. Go to those.

The book was much more basic than I had anticipated. Most of what was provided is obtainable by common sense and a few moments in the backyard.

The fifth volume of this groundbreaking, somewhat revisionist, series covers late 1970 through the first few days of the October 1973 Arab-Israeli war. (Volume 6 presumably covers the remainder of the war.)As with the preceding four volumes, this book provides the Arab perspective mostly through interviews with former pilots, and most of the available published sources. Because much of this material has never before been published, and is at odds with many sources (which predominantly rely on Israeli information), it frequently contradicts the established line, and challenges many old assumptions. In this volume the authors explicitly take their critics to task more frequently and more explicitly than in past volumes, it seems to me.This volume has some particularly nice aspects, especially the coverage of helicopter assaults and special operations in the 1973 war, which shed light on this poorly-understood aspect of the ground war in Sinai. Some excellent appendices include excerpts of Egyptian pilot's logs and a photo-gallery of Egyptian squadron commanders. Photographs, maps and illustrations are excellent as always.My major criticism of this volume is the editing, which seems poorer than earlier volumes. There are some sloppy typos which a spell-checker program could easily have caught, and the footnotes in Chapter 3 in particular need serious editing, they read like they were written by a verbose non-English speaker.

The ideal reference book for Arab Aircraft and airwar in the Middle-east. This series arguably could be the best ever produced.

These are excellent books by Harpia. I have bought all of their Arab MiGs series (and the Mirage series) and really enjoy all of them. Great easy to read text, with lots of details and excellent photos make these books ones I look at often, even after reading them once. Shop around as the prices can vary some. Buy the series and you'll not be disappointed. You will learn a lot from them!

This was purchased for my 14 year old daughter who asked for a devotional book of her own. It doesn't have dates in it like most devotionals I've owned, but there are 365 devotionals in it. Each devotion has scripture that goes along with an explanation, story, life experience, etc relating to that scripture written by other teen girls from all over the country of various ages. I love that the writings are by other Christian teen girls. The devotions are very easy for my daughter to understand because it's like hearing her peers explaining what they think about that scripture. This is important (in my opinion) for young Christians or young people seeking a relationship with Christ. I'm purchasing this item again today because my older daughter (17 yrs old) really likes it and requested one. Now my girls can do their daily devotionals together! I highly recommend this to anyone who has a young lady in their life who wants to have a closer relationship with Christ or who you want to encourage to have that relationship. I would say this is for a wide variety of ages of girls - depending on their understanding/knowledge of Scripture OR if they have someone they can ask questions if they don't understand. My daughter has had no problem understanding this devotional at all. We do look up the scripture in her Bible each day and read it there as well. That is the main time she has questions or may need a deeper explanation which I am more than happy to do and share that time together. In my opinion I would say the book could be for a girl who is 11 or 12 years old and up. She may need some explanation of Scripture, but the devotions written are so easy to understand. My daughters think the book is also very "pretty". It is hardcover, but it's a soft hardcover. Not like cardboard. I couldn't be happier with my purchase & highly recommend this to others.

I bought this book as a confirmation gift for a 13 year old girl and when I looked in the book and read some of the devotions, I did not feel that some of the topics were appropriate for young teens (i.e. sex, drugs, alcohol, homosexuality, etc.). Don't misunderstand me - I believe these topics should be DISCUSSED with young teens, but I do not think it is appropriate to hand them a book with a 2 - 3 paragraph devotion on these topics, without any follow-up discussion. I ended up not giving her this book and, instead, gave her a Bible for teen girls!

This is the one! Pick this one! I read all of the reviews from several teen girl devos and I did some google searching to find excerpts/sample pages. This devo addresses difficult topics that we may not think are appropriate for young teenagers, but unless your children are home-schooled, do not watch TV, and never have unsupervised social interaction (even at church), then your children are already dealing with these issues and they need this book to help them learn and live the only perspective that matters on any issue, God's! My niece saw me (when I dropped my daughter off at school this AM) and with this book in her hand and her finger inside it marking her spot, she yelled out to me, "THANK YOU for my devotional, Aunt Jessi!!!"Also, because it is written by teens, I think the readers feel like it is even more relatable to their own lives. The scriptures - the Bread of Life, and the stories within these pages, are just what the teenage girls in in our lives need to help them draw close to Him and have a joyful life even in the midst of the storms of adolescence.

I like this book a lot. Being a teenager it really does give some comfort to some of the problems we face. I do wish the day to day things were a bit longer since they're only one short page. But I make it longer by reading the page the reading the chapter the bible verse they use comes from.

There was a very important detail left out of this book’s description. Each devotion was followed by the girl’s name, age, hometown, and church. Every girl is a member of a Baptist church exclusively. Just something to be aware of before making the decision whether to purchase or not.

This book is even better than I had anticipated it would be. The stories are deeply relatable for my 11-year-old daughter. She keeps it at her bedside and won’t go to sleep without reading it. She says that the information has provided useful insight regarding her maturing thoughts and feelings. She especially appreciates that it is written by her age group so that she can connect with it on a more personal level. This is a fabulous book of comfort and guidance for every teenager or preteen.

I bought this for my 12 year old granddaughter and gave it as a Christmas gift. When she opened it, I pointed out that it was "for teens, written by teens", so she started browsing through it. Very shortly thereafter, she came over and hugged me, almost crying, saying that she had just read a devotion and it was so great! She got MUCH more expensive items that she asked for, but THIS is the one she seemed to care about the most!

Bought this for my 12-year-old niece who was recently baptized. It's a beautiful book with relevant topics for teen girls and what they face each day out in the world. Highly recommend!

We have the girls and guys version for our 10 kids! Love it and our teenagers completely relate to the daily devotionals. Our kids do this every morning before they come down for breakfast. Well written and such an encouragement that they are written by other like minded teens.

On the surface, this a beautiful, oversized book which is exactly as advertised-- an encyclopedic listing of outlaw motorcycle clubs worldwide. Each club has a little listing containing SOME information. Some have a box containing more info-- date, place of origin, locations, club colors (actual colors-- white, blue gold,etc.) and description of the club patch... and there SOME very nice photographs of SOME patches. Which brings me to my major beef-- NOT ENOUGH! It would have been very nice if at least most of the clubs had their patches pictured. Considering how many clubs have websites and E-mail addresses, this does'nt seem to be too big an expectation... What IS here is very nice---some beautiful photography and some essays by clubbers.. BUT---another beef, there are some inaccuracies and incompletes (nit picking? perhaps.) 1)FILTHY FEW is sub group within the Hells Angels MC ONLY, and a club that stole the name in New Zealand. It is NOT a "common idiom throughout the motorcycle culture". 2)The NUGGETS MC has not flown the described patch of "a beer drinking rabbit on a motorcycle" since it's very early days. Since the late 60's, they've flown their current patch--- a gold nugget with a motorcycle inside. They rode full dressers back then and morphed into choppers--an interesting fact not mentioned. 3)The Mongrel Mob of NZ should not have been included--- they wear cuts with patches but they DON'T RIDE. 4)The Gypsy Jokers is listed as a"classic club" and it is--- their patch is listed as a grinning skull... gee whiz, that's the Australian club who just appropriated the name and made up their own patch. The Aussies have since made a connection to the originals and adopted the real top and bottom rockers but kept the skull center patch. The REAL Gypsy Joker patch was and is a walking jester--- that's a real boner on the author's part. An annoying incomplete--"Curious about that demonic critter on the Pagan's patch?" sez the back cover and the blurb on Amazon--- Yeah, it's the norse fire demon Surtur or dark Surt, BUT they DON"t say that it's a direct lift from a 1963 issue of Marvel comic's JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY in a TALES OF ASGARD story drawn by one of the greatest comic book artists of the 20th century- JACK KIRBY. Despite these criticisms, it's still a cool book... One really funny feature is a reprint of a 1960's cop manuel on outlaw bikers--- so THAT'S where they got the idea that I had a shotgun rigged up in my handlebars!

The ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA alludes to being an A-Z authority on outlaw motorcycle clubs ... a one-stop shop for anything/everything pertaining to such clubs ... quite appealing to anyone curious in learning more about the outlaw biker culture. While the book provides a nicely organized listing of outlaw clubs with a decent collection of color photos, it lacks the substantive content I was expecting for a book with "encyclopedia" in its title.Organized alphabetically, THE ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA does provide general information about a large number of bike clubs, including a multitude of lesser-known groups. Most of the entries follow a standard base of details such as date of origin, estimated membership and the territory the clubs preside. As expected, the larger, more recognizable (infamous?) clubs receive more lavish, multiple-paged entries and more photographs, but not much .Considering the subject matter, the listing of clubs is likely incomplete/ever-changing and the availability of elaborate details is understandably scant as secrecy plays a part into the one-percenter culture; I don't fault the author for this. My issue is that the book could have been so much more, well ... "encyclopedic". It would have been nice to see the colors/patch accompanying each club entry. The larger clubs do have known histories (proven by the numerous television documentaries like the "Gangland" series and books written by actual members) that could have provided significantly more information, timelines, leadership, etc. Appendices could have shed light on the various add-on patches and symbolism. Other, overview topics could have been covered as well: the numerous other patches worn, crime, tattoos, the role of women in these groups, a timeline of significant events and how the culture has progressed/regressed over the years.The whole one-percenter culture is enigmatic, ominous and provocatively interesting to those who don't ride. I believe the ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA is an interesting and colorful presentation of a large list of outlaw biker clubs. One the surface, the book serves as a decent overview that covers a large number of the more obscure clubs and should satisfy those with little knowledge of such clubs. But for those who enjoy reading about biker clubs, the ONE PERCENTER ENCYCLOPEDIA will likely fall short of being the resource it is expected to be.

All I can say is that Mr. Hayes did a great job in telling what the clubs represent and how they have been misrepresented by the media as being villains when they actually are a brotherhood living by their own rules which by the constitution is everyone's right. Again he has done a great job. I highly recommend this encyclopedia for those wanting this insight.

I’m a member of a 1% club listed in this book and found it to be well done and an interesting addition to my library.

The title of this book is a bit misleading. When I saw that it is an Encyclopedia, I assumed that there would be information about the various OMC's; history, notable members, significant events about criminal involvement, etc.The book is merely an identification of OMC colors or patches with very little information about the clubs. My bad for making that assumption, but the book would be more fairly referred to as a OMC colors or patch picture book. I wanted the book for more of a historical purpose, something to show the evolution of the clubs, their conflicts, alliances and the dynamics of their criminal involvement. I should have done a little more research before I bought the book.

The book is missing more clubs than it contains. Those that are in it have very little information about them. Useless.

A lot of information. Not very in depth however. Just club names, dates formed, and locales. Some are wrong. Some not included.
