Required for an offshore class I'm taking. Interesting read. Very insightful and keeps attention better than a normal text book.

Wow. Just wow. It's hard to believe that in today's oilfield, companies can be so reckless with concerns for safety. The commission leaves no stone un-turned, and explains the painfully obvious errors made by BP, Halliburton, and TransOcean in full detail. As usual, the mainstream media didn't accurately explain the root causes of the disaster, but this book sure does. After reading, attempting to understand how BP is allowed to continue operations in the U.S. is beyond me. The commission did an excellent job (in my opinion) of investigating the incident, reporting on it, and recommending corrective actions on behalf of companies and government regulatory agencies.

Every scientist, engineer, and concerned citizen should read this clearly written and engaging report. Unfortuately, the binding of this tradeback book is defective - the pages become unbound when the book is opened. I returned my first copy only to recieve a replacement with the identical problem. Deep Water is available on-line for free if you don't want to spend $39.00 for a potentialy unusable hard copy. Also read the Chief Counsel's Report and BP's Internal Report, which are also available on-line.

This book was substituted without warning or notice for my Kindle order of The Man in the Gray Flannel suit. Literally, it is a bait-and-switch. This report is the outcome of an intense six-month bipartisan effort to determine the disaster's causes and improve our ability to respond to spills. Its authors concluded that the well's loss could have been prevented, its blowout can be traced to a systematic series of mistakes made by BP and its contractors, necessitates reform of regulatory oversight of deep-water oil production, and requires that industry and government develop improved means of spill cleanup - unchanged even 20 years after the Exxon Valdez. Stated alternatively, it is inappropriate to single out any single misstep as the cause of the Deepwater explosion, and doing so would encourage unjustified complacency going forward.The report is divided into three sections: Chapters 1-3 describe the events of 4/20/2010, and the events leading up to in the preceding decades - especially how expansion of deepwater drilling in the Gulf was not met by capable regulatory oversight.Chapters 4-7 highlight issues believed must guide policy in engineering, spill response, and the impacts of the spill. Finally, chapters 8-10 present the Commission's recommendations for business practice reform, regulatory oversight, and broader policy concerns.

I bought this as a hostess gift for a family that has had a summer home at Surf City, Long Beach Island for generations. They loved it!

I have read quite a few books about Long Beach Island history, and for sheer fun, this one is my new favorite. If you are at all familiar with the Island, this book will feel like a family album as you search through the hundreds of old black-and-white photographs, which are large, easy to see and captioned, looking for familiar faces and places. The book preserves the day-to-day history of that singular New Jersey barrier island, not only through previously unpublished photos from the collections of Lynn Photo and the late photographer Bill Kane, but also through the amusing and often intimate snippets from taped interviews (by the late Eleanor Smith) of long-time Island residents and old-timers who are also now deceased. The quotes and pictures both are wonderful. I found that I could open this book to any page at random and be thoroughly entertained!

Much more than a fine coffee-table adornment, this well-researched and thoughtfully-edited evocation of the culture of Long Beach Island is a delightful continuation of Margaret Buchholz Thomas's lifelong love-affair with the Jersey Shore. Like going through an old family album with the help of an uncle who knows all the stories and retells them with zest and flavor.

A great book for parents who want to apply Tuina therapy to their kids and reduce their dependency on doctors and medicine. The techniques are explained in a clear manner and also accompanied with an introduction that explains how to plan the course(s) of treatment. For each complaint (cough, diarrhea etc...) the treatment is based on the "pattern", which is the pathology (based on Chinese medicine's theory) that caused the complain in question. The right pattern can be diagnosed through different symptoms (fever, stool, mucous, breath etc) or causes (for example, diarrhea due to food poisoning) so the parent should very carefully observe the child and choose the right pattern so as to choose the right treatment. It's not always crisp clear though, so give it time and compare patterns over and over again.What I did miss is an appendix explaining pediatric TCM in general - an specifically the importance of supplementing the spleen-stomach system. This can explain the reader why, for example, many treatment start with supplementing the spleen. Also, I think it should be clearer that in Chinese medicine "fever" can be also just feeling warm, and not necessary fever as defined by pediatricians and detectable through a thermometer. I believe this is what is meant by "slight fever" in the symptoms? Perhaps the author can clarify that.This book is empowering parents to use Tuina, and does a much better job than the YouTube videos out there which in comparison, are not always as accurate and clear.

This book will empower the parent to be able to do something for their baby to help ease discomfort from cholic, or teething issues, or even the common cold or indigestion, and will also teach techniques that the parents can to just to boost the baby's own immunity so that they catch fewer colds. Still the go to book on my shelf.This is still the first reference book I pick up when looking for a hallmark I can't identify. In 90% of the cases I find what I am looking for along with a small bio. It's the missing 10% that frustrates me and I wish the book would be revised and updated again. Far better organized and more info. than the rest. If you can only afford one reference book let this be the one.

This book has been extremely helpful in identifying makers marks. It does not have photos of the marks, though, which I wish it did. It has drawings.Very easy to use, several ways to look up a mark and extra information about artists. I would buy again.

Not everything nor everyone, but the first guide you add to any reference library on Native American makers

I bought this book because of my collection of authentic Native American jewelry. An accumulation of over 40 years. Unfortunately, most of what I have is not listed in the book and I assume that is because of the fact the jewelry was not made in the southwest. Some of the pieces I have did have the Artisans and Hallmarks represented in the book and it gave me the information I needed. I would highly recommend this book. It is filled with drawings and sketches and history. I would also recommend Margaret Wright's book on Hopi Hallmarks.

This is a superb compendium of the marks and tribal associations of Native American artists, particularly silversmiths and artisans. I learned a lot while looking up several items in this book, the signatures and marks are mostly well-illustrated, although I found the mix of cursive, symbolism and print marks to be inconvenient....better if, as in some silver books I have for English silver, it was divided according to the KIND of mark, animals--plants--cursive letters--print--full names---nicknames, etc. Also, some of the photographs of the marks are so small that it is difficult to compare them with the "real thing". I also found that "lesser" artisans whose work is out there in the marketplace are not included, even though they are more common. Even these need to be identified as to family lineage, etc. by the collector since very often we see pieces included in auction bundles and their identification is sketchy at best. Much of what I have is as gifts from a relative in Arizona, signed pieces of great beauty, and yet I could not find a single one identified in this book. So is one then to assume that they are necessarily lesser works? As I've gotten into this more I've not found any book that approaches the subject in a tutorial format....I guess that is what I'm looking for! My understanding from others more involved in SW jewelry collecting is that they learned how to select the best items by trial and error....but for silver in this market that seems to mean rather costly lessons must be learned!

It's probably too soon to be writing the biography of James Packer who is barely past 50 with many productive years and many more interesting adventures ahead of him. In some ways he is the poor little rich boy and in others he is the supremely talented but angst ridden billionaire business tycoon. The book does a good job of pulling the curtain back and revealing how and why James has conducted his life and business affairs, warts and all. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if it had been written in a more chronological style. Instead, we jump around back and forth in time quite a bit. Being a long time Las Vegan I was particularly interested in those parts of the book dealing with James' business dealings here. I would have liked to learn more about them. They were all spectacular failures which almost brought his whole business down, but very little information was discussed regarding why the decisions he made were made. Overall I found the book to be entertaining and it seemed to be even handed in telling the story without a lot of puffery. I found it definitely worth the time and effort to read and would recommend it to anyone looking for a biography of a contemporary businessman.

While aspects of the Packer family, particulalry Kerry, were interesting and detailed, I found that by midway it had become repetitive. The same details and major events were outlined half a dozen times.

Throughout the book you can see the author truly cared about his subject and wanted to tell his story in context.

This book failed to tell a story. It didn't follow a clear timeline, it didn't dig into the awkward relationships or seem that balanced in its reporting. Instead, it came across as positive publicity for Packer, full of name dropping and a list of dollars made or lost.

This is without a doubt my favorite Calvino book. I have read every English translation of his books, many of them two and three times. I wrote my MFA thesis on Calvino's writings and Giorgio De Chirico's paintings from 1911 to 1916. Six Memos is my most cherished work by Calvino and I have read it at least a dozen times or more, so much so that my paperback version(s) are dog eared and hopelessly marked with notes. The Kindle edition is a much needed addition to my library. I always return to this book for creative inspiration, especially when I am in a dry spell. A must have for anyone who creates, whether it be writing, music, or the visual arts. His principles apply across the board.

Calvino was a genius and although sometimes he's difficult to read--in fact sometimes he just doesn't seem to make much sense--it's worth the effort to struggle with his ideas. I prefer his stories to his essays, but this little book is an interesting glimpse into the mind of a great man.

5 stars. Six Memos for the Next Millennium, a series of lectures Calvino planned to give at Harvard, is a wonderful meditation on writing. This isn't a technical guide to writing. Rather, Calvino focuses on more abstract themes and their corresponding sensory experiences. There is a lot to unpack, and I will definitely be rereading this gem for years to come.

Until I read about Italo Calvino's brilliance in Umberto Ecco's Six Walks in the Fictional Woods, his works remained on bookstore shelves as clouds hang in the sky. Two titles attracted my attention: Why We Read the Classics and Under the Jaguar Sun. So fascinating were Calvino's thoughts about literature in the former and the three stories in the latter that I located the title Six Memos for the Next Millennium from Eco's book and bought it.This volume is constituted by five Charles Eliot Norton lectures Calvino gave in 1985, shortly before he died. They are titled "Lightness," "Quickness," "Exactitude," "Visibility," and "Multiplicity." In each, Calvino explores the invisible working of language, whether it is the expression of mythmakers, poets or scientists -- ancients (Ovid and Lucretius), early moderns (Bocaccio, Dante and Galileo) and contemporaries ((Borges, Kafka and Kundera). But as well, he reveals his own thoughts about his own writings. For amateurs like myself, I also was introduced to writers I'd either knew casually or not at all - Cavalcanti (whom I discovered while reading essays by Ezra Pound more than a decade ago) and Montale and Leopardi.What is most exciting is Calvino's ability to uncover what is hidden in the work of such modern writers as Jorge Luis Borges, whose work has fascinated me, but which I've never been confident I penetrated. As a result of reading Six Memos, I plan to return to Borges' works soon, but not until I've read some more of Calvino's fiction, including Cosmcomics, which I am currently reading, with great wonder.After reading Six Memos for the first time, I've now read it a second time, more slowly than the first time, and plan to read it a third, even more slowly. Six Memos reveals to the reader the challenges of any writer to be able to capture the truth.For any reader who also wishes to understand the magic of poetry, this is, in my judgment the best book I've ever read. It not only opens doors to anyone interested in the poetic art, it provides a set of criteria by which one may judge good poetry from bad.I've also sent the title to fiction- and poetry- reading friends, anticipating that they will find it as exciting.

This book is a collection of talks on writing Calvino was preparing as a series of documents specifying some important keys of literature that he felt needed to be recorded as crucial elements of literary tradition. Indeed, in his essay "Visibility," Calvino brings up his concern for the future of imagination and literature in a world so full of prefabricated imagery, where images are provided rather than solicited. While his initial impulse was to write six lectures, he evidently reported at one point of his process that he had ideas for eight, but in the end he only completed five. In her introduction, Esther Calvino clarifies that she decided to keep the title true to Italo's original intention and publish the series under the original title, despite the missing sixth. In the lectures themselves, Calvino provides the kind of insight and fascination with the making of literature that fuels so many of his best books. Rather than come across as a manifesto of his own brilliance, as the premise may sound, Calvino spends a lot of time in admiration of the work of other writers, from classics like Ovid and Dante to colleagues and contemporaries, like Francis Perec and Douglas R. Hofstadter. The lectures are of course sometimes punctuated with personal details about his own writing processes, but I found them very inviting and revealing about the ideas he was trying to point out. Each lecture dedicates itself to an aspect of literature that Calvino finds crucial: "Lightness," or the aspect of language that speaks directly to a reader and is not always weighed down with intellectual metaphor but with direct communication; "Quickness," or the immediacy of literature - the way it cuts through random detail to get to the necessary; "Exactitude," or the precision of language (and when it needs imprecision); "Visibility," or the power of imagery to convey ideas; and "Multiplicity," or the complexity of content. Calvino is a writer who has always presented a kind of fascinating enigma. His works is spectacularly visual, and while crucially uncategorizable in its sense of being not easy to nail down in the area of metaphor or theme (something that Calvino no doubt worked quite strenuously at, clear when he talks about a poem's meaning in "Exactitude" as being "not fixed, not definitive, not hardened into mineral immobility, but alive as an organism"), it is also quite accessible and always an enjoyable read. Calvino mastered the art of experimentalism that did not read as though one needed to be schooled in the traditions of literature to understand his intents. Though Calvino clearly wants to offer his lectures as guides for the necessities of literature for posterity, it is also a manifesto on the man's own aesthetic, though it is not a manifesto that demands the agreement of others, or the demand that others follow in his footsteps. Though Calvino does have moments of criticism, as when he accuses schools of dispensing "the culture of the mediocre," which I take to mean the conveying of literature as something with set meaning that we must all learn and emulate (or at least parrot back), and also directs a barb or two at the publishing industry when he supports experimentalism with the following caveat: "The demands of the publishing business are a fetish that must not be allowed to keep us from trying out new forms." In this lecture series, Calvino presents himself quite wise and worldly, but also quite direct and earnest. A reading of this work at the start of any literature course on almost any level of schooling might provide a stiff reminder that literature is a work of passion, not just analysis, and it also works in the realm of paradox, as Calvino himself presents--that it is structure in literature that is needed to make it transcend structure, that one needs to be as aware of the lack of success in literature as much as success to see the stuff of great literature. Calvino's last `memo,' "Consistency," was never written, but I could only imagine where he would have gone with it, which was always a strength of Calvino's work. The last lecture seems to bring to a full circle many of things he brings up through the series, but Calvino's work always found a way to extend beyond the full circle. Perhaps, in the end, the consistency needs to be ours, to make sure that this wisdom does not go to waste.

As I read this book I found everything Chris said clicking with how I work. He pretty much summed up my own outlining process, but in a clearer way (totally going to use the exercises as a step-by-step guide). I basically start with the concept/synopsis for the book, which I derive from brainstorming/snowflaking. Then I do some quick character sketches and move onto Dan Harmon's story circles for the main characters. BTW, I really like how detailed Chris got in this section of the book. He tackled each each point with clear explanations and multiple examples. Very useful! Then I use Russell Blakes' action beat and reversal/surprise technique. Its very comforting and affirming to read that Chris has come to the same workflow :)I don't stop there though. I find I need a little bit more for my scenes before I start writing. I do some location scouting, which I learned from the guys over at Sterling and Stone. I'll find some pictures/art for the locations along with writing down key features, props, and smells that might be in the scene - that way I don't have to think of them on the spot as I'm writing, letting me focus on the story instead of the details. I also add info I picked up from Jim Butcher and Deborah Chester - Goal, Conflct, Disaster, Reaction, Dilemma, Decision. Sure this is more work up front, but it makes the writing process so much more enjoyable.

I've read The Writer's Journey, Story Engineering, The Art of Character, Layer Your Novel, and many more. But this book is different because it explains the creative process in addition to what-to-do. How do ideas form and fit together to create a whole. When an idea pops into your head, what do you do with it and why? If you're suffering from writers block, and don't know what story to write, I could see how Fox's beginning suggestions could help you turn intangible ideas into concrete sentences and put inspiration into your writing. Very well done and I will read often for reference.

Lately, I've steeped myself in information on outlining novels in an attempt to level up my craft.Even so, Chris Fox managed to provide a fresh take on the subject, which helped fill in gaps that I now realize were missing from my approach.My Kindle is full of highlights from this book that I plan to revisit the next time I sit down with pen and paper to outline a novel. Whether it's thinking of each plot development in terms of its proper setup, choosing the right kind of character flaws for your genre, or A/B testing plot developments to see which one results in the richer story..these are tools I plan to keep in my gardener's toolbox for each time I plan a new harvest!

So this actually taught me how to plot effectively!Often when asked if I were a pantser or plotter, I would answer "pantser" -- but the truth was I'm sort of in the middle. At some point I started saying "plantser", which no one seemed to understand; a better word was "percolator" but even fewer people understood that one.Now I can say I'm a gardener, because after reading this book not only do I know I am in the middle of the two things, I know *how to do it more effectively*. (Also, composting ideas is a lot like percolating them.)If you're vacillating somewhere in between pantsing and plotting and can't really figure out what works for you, I recommend reading this book. It helped me a lot and now I have way more self-confidence in my plotting skills. Turns out it wasn't that I was *bad* at plotting -- I had just never been given the right tools to do it effectively for my writing style.

This book will absolutely change how you write your stories. I have always been a pantsing plotter, suffering from constant questioning and retooling. Plot Gardening has changed that for me. Provocative questions and examples of why the seeds of your story are more important as to how tall your tree will grow. If you don't take care of the garden before you sow, your reap will bear little fruit. It is as heavy with Character Development as it is with Plot, and Chris reminds us we cannot have one without the other. Plot Gardening systematically leads you from the ideas to character development and world building. There are helpful links throughout the book in case you find yourself lost in your own head. If you want to go from a good writer to an amazing author; GET. THIS. BOOK!

This book is filled with amazing content and knowledge. You can tell Chris has done the time as an experienced writer and lays out some of the best methods for planning your novel.I think every writer could gain something from this book. I’ve always been partly a pantser and plotter for writing my stories, however, after reading this book I’ve gained a much better system for plotting and writing my current series.Read this book, do the exercises at the end of each chapter and watch how your story develops. I dare you!

I've really enjoyed Chris' nonfiction book series so far, and this installment is certainly no exception. He does a great job of presenting a lot of different options when it comes to considering how to plot a story, and backs it up and examples from well known works of fiction that the reader will easily understand (or can easily get access to). Even for longtime writers like me, Chris was able to present new information to consider in my own writing disciplines.

This book contains the best explanation of the Hero's Journey for writers I've ever found. Most explanations get bogged down in stuff about threshold guardians and which character should be your trickster archetype. But Chris gives you just what you need to create strong character arcs and outlines. My outlining has already improved since finishing this book the other day.
