Let me start by saying I have been an Amazon customer for twenty years and I have *never* reviewed anything before. But I consider this book to important for me to keep my mouth shut. It was a life-changer for me. Don't know why some reviewers are saying it is not helpful for people with severe depression - maybe some people with severe depression need a different approach, but let me speak for the rest of us. I was having suicidal thoughts, and on the highest doses of meds available. I was also in therapy. I tried two different therapists, both of whom wanted to talk about other people in my life - my parents, my husband, etc. - which was not helping me at all. I was at my wit's end, really scared that I was going to hurt myself if things didn't get better soon, when a friend recommended this book. You have to do the exercises - yes, they seem silly, but if they work, who the heck cares? Get a nice little notebook and a pen that you enjoy writing with. I made mine a sort of journal that I doodled in and added little inspirational quotes here and there. And yes, it is deceptively simple. Again, who cares? If standing on my head and whistling "Dixie" would have made me feel this much better, I'd be doing that, too. I started reading the book a month ago. I do not do all the excercises, but I did try all of them. I do what works for me. It's also true that there is the usual filler crap that you get in self-help books "Janet is a 40-year old dental assistant who came to me in 2005 suffering from..." blah, blah, blah. Just skip it. My depression is so much better that I am shocked. I am no longer thinking about suicide, and I am actually able to picture a future that is not completely empty and black. A future!!!!!! I have not had a future in years! I can't express what that means to me, but if you have depression, I don't have to. Try the book. If it doesn't work, I hope you will try something else, and keep on trying. You are not alone, and you deserve to be happy.

The ideas in this book are so simple, yet so powerful. We all have an inner voice (the Buddhists call it "monkey mind") that creates thoughts in our brain. These thoughts then make us feel a certain way. In knowing that our thoughts create how we feel, we can drastically improve the quality of our lives. This book shows that it's not what happens to us in life, it's what we think about it.For example, say you lose your job. Many people would then catastrophize and think negative thoughts about how awful it was, how we're going to be homeless and go broke and then we get depressed. Instead of thinking like that, we should think realistically about how it's tough that we lost our jobs, but we'll eventually find another one and that we will overcome the current crisis.I was a pessimist for years. Negative thinking becomes a habit and changes brain chemistry. By thinking more realistically and talking back to our negative thoughts, we can live much happier lives.

Once you start reading this book, you will start to feel better. If you suffer with depression, this book is better than any prescription I have tried. It deals with the here and now, and teaches you how to understand your own negative contribution to your depression, and it gives you several tools with which you can assess where you are at, how you talk to yourself, how you interpret others, and how to regain control over that narrative.Best book that I have ever read. It made a difference just reading, but much more so by using the knowledge and tools that Dr. Burns provides in the book. I bought copies for friends and family who have also had learned how to feel better and even feel good.I would give it 6 stars if I could

I was fortunate to learn that the author was trained at my alma-mater, and it gave me the initial faith to read this book and do the work inside. This is university tested and developed Cognitive Behavior Therapy made available to anyone, it's success has been documented in over 40,000 patients in double-blind peer-reviewed studies. It changed my life. For 15 years I WAS anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications, after reading this book, and doing the Cognitive Behavior Therapy exercises, I was able to wean myself off meds completely.

Unfortunately, I've had to grapple with anxiety and depression most of my life. But you work with the hand you were dealt, am I right? On top of meds and therapy, I've amassed quite a collection of self-help books, some better than others. I try to be proactive in dealing with my business; I feel that's super important in helping deal with mental and emotional problems. For anxiety, I've found that books on mindfulness meditation to be quite helpful. For depression, stuff that emphasizes CBT is effective. That's why I like this book. It's written well, although some bits seem a bit dated (an example in the book of something that might irritate you is when you use your last dime at a payphone and the call drops and you don't get your money back. Little things like that pop up here and there in the book, but don't detract from the important things).I use some of the exercises in this book with a therapist which is helpful. There are exercises where the author asks you to write out things instead of mentally reviewing things. I agree with that recommendation. It helps solidify concepts and organize your thoughts. The book is written well, and in a conversational way. I found there were many times the author explained something that made me say 'Yeah, that's me! If I'm being honest, that's how I think and what it really means!'Hopefully you'll like it. Do the exercises, be honest in the exercises, and if you see a therapist try working through this stuff with them. My therapist knew who this author was right away and was familiar with his work. It's one of the few books like this that I own that I go back and review periodically.

Well, summer school has started and Yuzu has heard many rumors from her friend about what happens. But the truth is much more interesting than the stories. There is another young lady, Shiraho Suzuran (or Shirapon as Yuzu calls her) also in the classes. She is very astute, and seems to know about people while watching them - all but Mei. As the two get to know each other, there is some time for fun - like the summer festival and the whole gang is getting involved. But when Yuzu overhears a confession between Mei and Shirapon, does this mean the end of her hopes for love - or can it help the two get closer? This was a good twist to the story. A new player for Mei has stepped up, and she is fixed on her. This was a good volume and will need to see how the next one develops for these two.

I hate the fact that I have to wait for the next one, this series draws you in and you just want it to keep going

Every volume is more delightfully delicious than the last, making that long wait between releases EXCRUCIATING! Fantastic characters that have kept me hooked since panel one, and leave me begging for more.

Its citrus, you know it’s good don’t waste your time looking at reviews :D

Citrus remains a strong series with Volume 7 and we are introduced to a new character, Shiraho Suzuran, whom Yuzu nicknames Shirapon. She's someone who has quite a gift for observation and deduction, almost like Sherlock Holmes reincarnated as a Japanese schoolgirl. Shirapon has a fascination with Mei and thinks Yuzu can provide needed information. As for our two heroines, they intended to dress up and go to a festival. Trouble is, the rest of the gang decides to make a party of it, depriving Yuzu and Mei of quality time. Yuzu and Mei have issues regarding their relationship and there are clues that Matsuri is plotting something for the next volume. There is a final story in which Yuzu meets Shirapon's family, which is an interesting one to say the least. Fans of Citrus will not be disappointed with Volume 7 and I am hoping we see more of Shirapon, perhaps even learn what is with her long gloves. Indeed, I think that if Saburouta was so inclined, Shirapon could carry her own series.

Lesbians

I’ve been a fan of this series for a while now, and I love the anime! It’s just fun to watch/read. I’ll keep rooting for Mei and Yuzu as the series progresses. Some might mistake this series for ecchi, but I believe it does provide lots of interesting plot development, alongside the former ;)

Good read

Notes from the Hyena's Belly, by Nega Mezlekia

From The New Yorker

Haile Selassie's Ethiopia regarded the lion as an emblem of the country's proud, ancient culture, but in this memoir it is the predatory hyena that symbolically stalks the land. The author, who is now an engineer in Toronto, spent a rebellious childhood in a small town near the troubled Somali border, just as the feudalism of the old order was giving way to the even crueller Marxism of the new one. He describes his experience as a member of a revolutionary student cell, his naïve enlistment as a teen-age guerrilla with the Somalis, and his survival of imprisonment, famine, and near-death by firing squad with the vivid swiftness of a Stephen Crane story. What mitigates the book's horror is its astute summaries of Ethiopia's history and its sharply observed parade of predators and victims, from the village tax collector, who carried "a cane with a retractable knife," to the author's mother, who relies on a medicine man to smoke the evil spirits out of her wayward son. Review

“[A] powerful memoir . . . By skillfully interweaving personal history, politics, and Amhara fables . . . [Mezlekia] has produced the most riveting book about Ethiopia since Ryszard Kapuscinski's literary allegory The Emperor and the most distinguished African literary memoir since Soyinka's Ake appeared 20 years ago . . . Mezlekia has summoned with imaginative directness and impressive tonal range, a world of uncertainty in which politics is never just background but permeates ordinary life.” ―Rob Nixon, The New York Times Book Review“[Mezlekia] describes his experience as a member of a revolutionary student cell, his naive enlistment as a teen-age guerilla with the Somalis, and his survival of imprisonment, famine and near-death by firing squad with the vivid swiftness of a Stephen Crane story.” ―The New Yorker“Nega Mezlekia's noteworthy memoir of growing up in Ethiopia is likely to tell readers far more than they previously knew about that embattled country . . . His book is as much a survivor's tale as it is a painstaking record of a country devouring itself.” ―Washington Post“Notes From the Hyena's Belly is not only a memoir, it is also a vital political and social commentary about the state of affairs in Ethiopia.” ―African Sun Times“His memoir tells us much about Ethiopia and much more about the human capacity to survive, even to thrive, in the midst of calamity.” ―Boston Sunday Herald“Spirited . . . A very welcome and much-needed contribution to the literature of the continent.” ―Newsday“Topical, moving, and fascinating. Nega Mezlekia concentrates his mind on his nation's history as he tells his own tale in prose imbued with a sense of commitment to truth. It is the best memoir by an Ethiopian that I've ever read.” ―Nuruddin Farah, author of Maps and Secrets“Notes from the Hyena's Belly is a lyrical memoir and a guide to the troubled recent history of Ethiopia. Growing up in Ethiopia during the fall of the Emperor Haile Selassie (whose reign Ryszard Kapuscinski chronicled in The Emperor), Mezlekia's formative years were filled with famine, war, and tremendous social and political upheaval. Despite such troubles Mezlekia's memoir is most engaging--it sheds light not only on the violence and disorder that beset his native country, but also on the rich spiritual and cultural life of Ethiopia. Through droughts, floods, imprisonment, and unfathomable killing sprees at the hands of military juntas, Mezlekia perseveres, and his lyrical tale bears witness to a world few Westerners have come to know. Part coming-of-age story and part front-lines reportage, Notes from the Hyena's Belly is a swift-moving journey that's never less than gripping.” ―BookSense.com“A glimpse into Hell. By some feat of alchemy, Mezlekia has transformed the nightmare that was his life in Ethiopia into a gripping story. Mandatory reading for anyone trying to understand Africa today.” ―Eric McCormack, author of First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstrous Regiment of Women“A masterful narrative that steeps the reader in Ethiopian folklore, myth, theology, and philosophy, blurring the boundaries between the spiritual and material worlds. Rich in wisdom, humor, and poetry, this is not simply the story of a boy coming of age, it is a portrait of a nation and its people.” ―George Makana Clark, author of The Small Bees' Honey“Magical . . . What makes Nega Mezlekia's memoir such a delight is the wonderment, at crazy life and crazier fate, that informs every page.” ―Charles Foran, author of The Story of My Life (So Far)“Mezlekia has a born storyteller's knack for pacing, and in his musical voice he manages to convey the helter-skelter of his existence . . . A story of high drama told with aplomb.” ―Kirkus Reviews“In telling his life story, Mezlekia describes in rich detail the turmoil and upheaval of Ethiopia after the fall of Emperor Haile Selassie and the rise of a communist junta and its 'Red Terror.' He recalls an early childhood full of stories and myths, with which he salts his accounting of biographical and historical specifics. As he matured and realized the injustices of Ethiopia's feudalism, he joined youth rebellions seeking reform. At 18 he was forced to join a guerrilla army as the social and political structure of Ethiopia collapsed in a struggle between western European interests and communist influence. Hungry for reform, he was disillusioned with a communist rhetoric that was accompanied by only slight change in the status of the downtrodden. Corruption was rampant, even as the general population faced famine, political 20unrest, economic chaos, and terrorism. Mezlekia left Ethiopia in 1983 and eventually emigrated to Canada. A stunning depiction of Ethiopia's current culture and conflict.” ―Vanessa Bush, Booklist“Born in 1958, the year he calls 'the year of paradox,' Mezlekia has written an intriguing book about growing up in Jigiga, Ethiopia. Full of adventure, political struggle, and intrigue, his memoir works as a coming-of-age story as well as a glimpse into a world of political corruption and change that Westerners rarely get to know so intimately. Mezlekia writes, 'We children lived like the donkey, careful not to wander off the beaten trail and end up in the hyena's belly.' He describes the careful divisions in dress, language, and culture between Muslims and Christians and brings them to life through vivid portraits of the people who populated his landscape. Mustafa and Ms. Yetaferu, two permanent houseguests, provide beautiful insight into these two religious and cultural stances in life. Mustafa's business adventures and Ms. Yetaferu's religious ceremonies stand in contrast to each other, creating a dynamic household. Mezlekia's tales of the spiritual and religious beliefs are some of the most fascinating parts of his life. He honors us with the telling of this rich story.” ―Barbara O'Hara, Free Library of Philadelphia, Library Journal“He treats the chaos and famine that enveloped his country with seriousness and style--even while recounting famine and war, he never loses the wit that no doubt helped him to survive some of the worst humanity has to offer.” ―Publishers Weekly

This is a memoir of the author's boyhood and young manhood in Ethiopia. Born in 1958 to a middle-class family in the city of Jijiga, Mr. Mezlekia left Ethiopia in 1980 and is now a professional engineer living in Toronto. Narrated with a light touch and a mixture of myth and fantasy, he opens a world for the western reader that has too long been influenced by nothing more than photos of skeletal images of starving children and grinding poverty. This story, however, is much more than that. From the start, there's a wide variety of interesting characters and a rich warm family life. There's Mustafa, the swindler, who boards at his home; there's Mr. Alula, the teacher, whose severe forms of discipline call for retribution by boyhood pranks; there's Wondwossen, his childhood companion, who joins a guerilla army with him; there are his sisters who never stop feuding. But most memorable of all is his mother, who holds her family together during the extreme hardships which inevitably come to this violent and war-torn land.He was 14 yeas old in 1972, a time when idealism and student protests were sweeping the globe. In Ethiopia, however, students were gunned down and murdered. Young Nega was jailed often and regularly, and always tortured, but somehow his descriptions of this time in his life are told with a touch of lightness. Years later, in 1977, when over 100,000 people are murdered in seven months during the "Red Terror" and bodies laid out over the streets, he yearns for the time when they were all just simply tortured. Throughout the book, I couldn't help shuddering at the all the cruelty. From the brutality of the schools, to scenes in the hospital where patients were beaten, to the way that monkeys were slaughtered, I found it disturbing how easily such things were taken for granted.Although Mr. Mezlekia does his best to describe the political situation, I found it hard to follow the various juntas and guerillas and political parties. The fantasies and myths, which I usually don't care for in literature, seemed very right for this book however. It was a constant reminder to me that this story did not come from a western author. Mr. Mezlekia is truly a witness to his times. He has certainly widened my understanding of his world.

Notes from the Hyena's Belly is a memoir that often reads like a novel. It depicts Nega's relatively calm childhood in sharp contrast to the growing unrest, civil strife and government corruption that dominated his adolescence and early adulthood. The book gives insight into a piece of Ethiopia's history, which is peppered with scenes from Nega's growing up years and folk tales that his mother told. Nega successfully speaks to the impact of civil war, government corruption and the too frequent global indifference to such issues in Africa, while at the same time maintaining a wry sense of humor that makes his story all the more human and real. This combination gives it a unique flavor and certainly makes it memorable.

Exactly what I wanted! Exactly what I got!

The story gripped me from the start. To see Ethiopian culture and history in such a clear way was so interesting. I learned so much watching the rise of Communism in Ethiopia through the author's eyes.

Eloquent telling of Ethiopian life during very difficult times.

I enjoyed the folk and cultural strands weaved into the narrative. Nega’s journey through one critical period in his country’s history provides a soulful window to a painful manmade experience with lessons to be drawn from

Good quality, good story, arrived a week after purchase with standard shipping.

If you want to walk in another person's shoes this is the way to go! This book is amazing! A must read!

This is a fabulous book. I’m a country boy. Both of my grandmothers canned. And my mother canned. (That’s what Victory Gardens were all about in WWII. Remember them?) And, since retirement 12 years ago, I’ve grown a garden myself and canned. But, where I have 100 canning jars, Daisy has 500. I have the old cookbooks, dating back to my great-grandmother, as well as the canning manuals. But Daisy provides recipes and tips that I’ve never seen before. Plus an easy, readable writing style. And honest answers. Reusable lids? Daisy says, “I have a confession . . . I have tried reusable lids and I really, really don’t like them.” Then she tells why. That alone saved me a lot more than the price of the book, I gotta tell ya.

Food preservation is quickly becoming a passion with me, so I read a LOT of resources on the subject. But I rarely read much of the narrative. Too eager to get to the step-by-step instructions... But Daisy's introduction, with its "write as if you're talking" style, drew me in immediately. I read every word from beginning to end! Other instructional authors should TAKE NOTE! The recipes look fabulous and I can't wait to try them. Plus it was fun to note that I'm already using some of the techniques described. I won't be embarrassed about canning all my leftovers as leftover soup. I'll be looking for other books by Daisy!

This book was all I wanted, and some things I didn't even know I needed! Not only does it emphasize SAFE canning practices, it does it in a manner that makes it easy to prepare ready-to-eat canned meals, assuring that all jars contain consistent amounts of product. You aren't going to have one jar of stew with mostly potatoes, and one with mostly meat. I have not tried any of the actual recipes just yet, as I just received the book a week ago. However, I have ear-marked about half the book and am eager to start! My garden will be expanded this year, and I will be canning until my heart is content! In addition, the book is full of healthy meals...you don't have to wonder what is in your food when you can it yourself. You will know!I did see one error in the book on a chili recipe that calls for 4 cups of ground cumin (for 7 quarts), but that is the only thing I noticed that I was disappointed in.You don't have to be a 'Prepper' to appreciate this canning book!

I love this book! I read it all in one sitting because I couldn’t seem to put it down! There are so many ideas and things I never thought to can before that now I can’t wait to try these recipes out. This by far, is the best “ prepping” book I have bought yet.

I did not really dislike, I was disappointed I paid that amount of money for this book. I am sure there will be something I can use at some time. All the information could be found in other cookbooks, especially Ball Canning. Nothing new here. All the pages are black and white. I am a seasoned prepper and canner, so I appreciate the effort on the part of the author, but this is definitely for a brand new beginner. One that does not have access to other canning books and a computer to look up questions. Thanks for your effort though.

I have wanted this book for so long....Lots of 'SIMPLE" canning if you are an ingredient canner...BUT there is so much more...perfect

Just got my pre-order! Exactly tge kind of book i needed. Explains everything. Looks like I'll be keeping this one in my kitchen. Very helpful. Now to get more jars....

I LOVE THIS BOOK, ..I HAVE USED THIS BOOK ALMOST ON A DAILY BASIS. I KEEP IT CLOSE WHEN I'M PICKING IN MY GARDEN AND EVEN CLOSER WHEN IN THE WINTER I AM USING THE FRUITS AND BERRIES TO MAKE JAMS AND JELLIES

Review

"You know the kind of joke that's super-hilarious but also points in some genius way to the whole thing of the universe? Like that."—Daniel Handler"If Emily Dickinson had a Tumblr, these witty one-liners are what she'd be posting...You'll want to not only display this one on your coffee table, but also read it from start to finish."—Marie Claire"Let us agree that Legault’s version cannot, and is not meant to, rephrase Dickinson’s original, but rather seeks to recreate the spirit of the poem in a style and length that speak to today’s readers (who tweet and text while reading multiple books on a single flickering screen)."—The Millions"There are so many ways into and out of this book. If you want to put it on your coffee table and pick it up at random to have a good laugh, then that’s fine, but you can also read it all the way through (as I did), letting yourself be pulled between diverse ways of reading...n the end, through this structure of repetition, Legault’s Dickinson emerges just as bold, queer, crass, hungry, sexual, demanding, and repetitive as I always knew she was."—Los Angeles Review of Books"A valuable contribution to the field of radical translation. "—Lambda Literary Review"Sheer genius that begs to be recited aloud."—Daily Candy

Paul Legault has attempted either a herculean or foolish task—depending on your point of view—of reducing all 1,789 poems of the great Emily Dickinson to a sentence or two. (Of course most of her poems are around eight lines anyway so it’s not as if he were trying to reduce Tennyson’s “In Memoriam” to one sentence.)I looked up what Mr. Legault calls translations of three of my favorite Dickinson poems and have written the first stanzas of each of them and the author’s words as well. Anyone who reads my little review can draw his/her own conclusion. The Bustle in a HouseThe Morning after DeathIs solemnest of industriesEnacted upon Earth –(I hate cleaning. Especially right after someone I love just died.)I’m Nobody! Who are you?Are you – Nobody – too! Then there’s a pair of us!Don’t tell! They’d advertise – you know!(I’m so insignificant that I don’t even exist. I’m so insignificant that I don’t even want to exist. I don’t even want people to know that I don’t exist. The way frogs exist. And no one cares about them. The way they’re arrogant the way they exist. I hate frogs.)If you were coming in the Fall,I’d brush the summer byWith half a smile, and half a spurnAs House wives do, a fly (Dear Sir, Sometimes I miss you. Let me know if you’re going to visit me so I know whether I should kill myself or not.)Mr. Legault also intersperses the same portrait of Miss Dickinson (I would never address her as Ms.) that we all recognize throughout the book with different captions. Here is one of them: “Dickinson, simultaneously aroused and disgusted by the thought of sex.” I rest my case.A word about the book’s appearance: it is very attractive with gold-edged pages and a cloth bookmark. And the author should get credit for reading all of Miss Dickinson’s poetry—what a delight that must have been. I’m sticking, however, with the original poetry.

This has nothing to do with Emily Dickinson. It is someone's sick and loose interpretation of her works.

I really enjoyed reading this along side of Dickinson's poems...anyone who enjoys her poems will enjoy this book...just a fun read.

Occasional misfires in the extreme, when Legault's aim is to "interpret" Emily Dickinson's poems. But, I'm glad I bought this book. Yay! for the author for treading, treading into Dickinson territory because the inviolable is the best material for humor.

This collection fails in so many ways, it doesn't merit review at all. If it weren't for the fact that it might mislead people into purchasing it, I wouldn't have bothered. To say, as the subtitle suggests, that it is "An English-to-English Translation of Emily Dickinson's Complete Poems" could hardly be further from the truth. Most of the one to two line quips (and to call them that is a stretch) have only a faint reference to something in the original but by no means capture anything of substance from the Dickinson poem. The back cover states "Everything is still there -- flowers, New England, God, Bobolinks, the high mortality rate of the nineteenth century, sexual obsession -- though written out in 'plain speech' ...". Really. What the author doesn't state is that there is very little of those things. What there is in abundance [and somehow I missed those in the original Emily Dickinson poems] are over 100 references to Big Foot, robots, Sigmund Freud, wizards, time machines, and zombies. There are 75 zombie "poems" alone. Is this the author's "attempt to rewrite her poems (with their foreign beauty intact) in 'Standard English.'"?The book is in fact not an "Emily Dickinson Reader" but, as one reviewer stated, a "vanity project" -- and a juvenile one at that. Legault is not Emily Dickinson's "humble translator" but rather an egocentric amateur.I would have far less criticism if the author were more honest. If the collection had been presented as a spoof on Emily Dickinson's poems, fine. If he had promoted his own zombitic twist to her poetry, I would have had different expectations. Even so, as another reviewer stated: "This is a joke that would be funny once, maybe twice, but stretching it out into an entire book is kind of overkill..."Though the author seems to have a working knowledge of Emily Dickinson, it doesn't appear as though he gave her poems a very careful read. In fact, the entire collection appears to have been whipped out in a matter of days. For some people Emily Dickinson is sacred and her poems should not be touched. I do not fall into that camp. Many people are a bit intimidated by her poetry. The language certainly can do that alone, but the complexity and bold experimentation -- the sheer genius of her poetry can challenge even the most devoted student. Any attempt to simplify an Emily Dickinson poem will lose something, yet if it remains inaccessible even more may be lost.If Legault sincerely wished to provide an "English version of what she meant." he should have tried harder, much harder. A book that comes closer to that end is haiku Emily! (2011) by Everett Decker.haiku Emily! At least there, some attempt is made at preserving something of the original while making it more accessible. A comparison of the three will illustrate my point:[Franklin numbering used]FR10Garlands for Queens, may be -Laurels - for rare degreeOf soul or sword -Ah - but remembering me -Ah - but remembering thee -Nature in chivalry -Nature in charity -Nature in equity -The Rose ordained!hE! 0010the laurel's for distinguished fewand garland's for the Queenthe rest will have to just make dowith roses shared betweenTEDR10I could probably only be queen in a completelyimaginary state. Forgiveness is at the heart of the Gospel.”This title is a call to action, meaty with understandable biblical instruction and the redemption only achievable through God. “Flourish into your full self,” Unice writes.Brave Enough will be sold with an accompanying DVD designed to approach the reader on multiple levels and is perfect for group study. (CBA Retailers+Resources)Blogger, counselor, and ministry leader Unice (She’s Got Issues) addresses unsung heroes and everyday bravery in her new book. Writing directly to female readers, Unice encourages women to be “brave enough” to handle life’s big and small challenges. Two chapters deal specifically with grace. “Brave enough women take grace seriously,” she writes, to have grace, one must “approach conflict with love and gentleness.” Unice also discusses the importance of courage in tackling life’s difficulties. She believes that “facing our limits―our own ‘enough’―often means facing our greatest fears.” In all cases, Unice supports her advice with real-life stories and a generous amount of scripture verses. Each chapter ends with a “Brave Enough Pause,” consisting of “Our Daily Brave,” a challenge to the reader to apply the teachings in the chapter to everyday life, and “Pray,” a prayer to end the chapter in conversation with God. Women dealing with situational anxiety or everyday fears will find encouragement and validation in this book. Those who have deeper fears or challenges may be in need of more stringent words of advice. (Publishers Weekly)

Review

Every woman I know needs more courage―to make the hard choices that lead to the best decisions. In Brave Enough, Nicole invites us to a deeper understanding of Jesus-courage that empowers and transforms our lives. You need this book! (Christine Caine, Founder of Propel Women and A21 Campaign)A lack of courage holds us back from doing those things―uncomfortable, risky, costly things―that God is calling us to. Nicole Unice reminds us that the One who calls is also the Source of the courage we need. A timely, welcome message at a time when we have Kingdom work to do! (Carolyn Custis James, Author of The Gospel of Ruth, Half the Church, and Malestrom)Brave Enough is an eye-opening, soul-embracing, spirit-filled book with wisdom on living in the freedom God has called us all to. Nicole challenges women to truly engage their hurts and hang-ups with insight into the daily journey that God wants with us. Through her practical engagement, you will be given invaluable tools to truly get your brave on each and every day. She reminds us that as women, at our core, we are all brave enough! (Ebony Halliburton, Lead associate director for women, DC Metro Church)Life―in all its joy, pain, and complexity―is not for the fainthearted. Raw and real, Nicole shares stories, wisdom, and practical tools that empower us to live in freedom and hold tightly to courage for the days ahead. (Jo Saxton, co-pastor of Mission Point Church, chair of 3DMovements board, speaker, author)In Brave Enough, Nicole gives us permission to be courageous. She challenges us to be confident and dares us to step into the purpose, passion, and potential that God designed us to embrace. It all begins with a daily, authentic encounter with Jesus. With real-life wisdom and authenticity, she invites us into a new adventure of being, living, and exploring the grace and growth of life in Christ. (Heather Zempel, Discipleship pastor at National Community Church in Washington, DC; speaker and author)Brave Enough is a call to abandon ourselves―our fears, flaws, and failures―for a called-out life, a life that stands the tests of time and pressures of the crowd. As followers of Christ, we are called out to live bold and free. Christ’s grace makes us brave enough. Nicole offers this gift to the church with a challenge to live graciously and courageously. I also love the prayer prompts, journaling, and exercises available throughout the book, as I have found these foundational disciplines instrumental for mentoring and discipleship. (Natasha Sistrunk Robinson, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary)As a pastor, husband, and father of a grown daughter, I found that Brave Enough speaks to the heart of the real stuff. Life’s hard experiences require us to be brave, but some of the more ordinary things require us to be brave too. And while this book is beneficial not just for women, it uniquely speaks to them and offers freedom from many of the fears that put chains on life. It gives them permission to not be Christian superwomen or the people that “the voices” say they should be. Instead, Brave Enough offers each reader the freedom to be the person God has made her to be. The insights and encouragements in this book are needed, and they offer us help for living in a culture filled with insecurity by comparison. (David Dwight, Senior pastor, Hope Church)Brave Enough is one of those books that stays with you. As I read, I felt as if Nicole was writing directly to me, opening my broken areas and pouring the truth of God’s love and power back into those very spaces. Her words are gracious, understanding, challenging, and life-giving, and you will find more freedom and more courage by the time you reach the last page. (Laura C. Robb, Writer, blogger, seeker of joy and everyday courage)Brave Enough offers wise, practical teaching for anyone who wants to uncover truth from God’s Word. Nicole Unice has lived and learned what it means to be brave enough in the midst of a busy life as a counselor, ministry leader, and mom. She is an articulate Bible teacher who has the unique ability to make scriptural principles understandable. Her stories, examples, and advice will inspire you to apply godly insight in your own circumstances. If you are brave enough to open the pages of this book, I believe it will change your life. (Mary Ann Ruff, Womens ministry director, Hope Church)Nicole Unice is one of those souls who becomes an instant friend the moment you meet her. Kind, smart, funny . . . all around likable. She has you belly laughing one moment and in deep, soul-searching conversation the next. Nicole’s new book, Brave Enough, is Nicole doing what she does best―encouraging, challenging, and motivating us to live boldly and freely the life God has for us. (Jenni Catron, Church leader and author of Clout: Discover and Unleash Your God-Given Influence)Nicole gives us a kick in the pants (gentle, but still a kick!) to step up our courage and live the lives we’ve been called to live. And then she offers practical steps to take our giftings further and further! (Elisa Morgan, Speaker and author)Nicole’s book helps us see that the life God is calling us to goes far beyond what feels safe. She reveals that what God calls us to do requires bravery. The good news, however, is that Jesus requires us only to be brave enough: brave enough to take that step of faith into the unknown, the messy, the scary, the downright ugliness of loving hurting people, the place where we risk failure, and the place that requires vulnerability. Nicole then shows how he comes to meet us there and gives us what we need to live out what he has for us. (Sara Pomeroy, Founder and CEO, Richmond Justice Initiative)
