Great maybe as a coffee table book but hardly as informative as I'd expect a handbook to be. Also outdated, containing info about models already discontinued prior to publication ...definitely was not worth pre-ordering.

The captions for the large number of photographs in this book are printed in a light gray text which is unreadable even with a magnifying glass. As there are far more photographs than actual written content concerning the subject the unreadability is really annoying. When I could actually read the captions they contain no technical information regarding what drone was used to capture the image or how the photo was post-processed or any actual information about the photo other than a description. Considering that the book is sold as a "handbook" both those factors keeps me from recommending the book as a source guide for this new area of photography. I take the term handbook to refer to a detailed reference for the subject that the book addresses. This is really a book of photographs all of which have a quality of sameness in their composition. That may be due to the nature of the technology and as such is not entirely a negative point. But the caption design is so bad that I had to knock off a star for what is really a pretty average book.

I never really write reviews but I wanted to help people out who might be debating about whether or not it's worth buying. There is good info for beginners but not much for those of us that are beyond that. Also there a LOTS of photos which is cool but the book is being sold as more of a handbook than a photo coffee table book so the title should change not to disappoint people. As a handbook there should be way more written content, diagrams, charts, etc…. Also the way the text is laid out is terrible. There are little paragraph breaks, and not much contrast between all the text with spacing, italics, bold, etc… which makes it not very easy on the eyes or readable. Some spreads are just a mountain of text which makes it feel daunting to read. If you think I am saying that because I'm old then you are wrong, I'm 29. All in all if you are looking for drone how-to content look elsewhere if you are looking for pretty pictures then this might be for you.

What an awesome book! In addition to being a great tutorial guide to this fascinating emerging field, the pictures in this book are just absolutely stunning!! Considering that the author is still in college, demonstrates his abundant talents and eye for this field at a very young age. Even if you are not interested in flying drones yourself, it makes a great coffee table book. We have it proudly on display! Kudos to Guttman! I look forward to more from this young photographer in the future!!!

The authors ability to accurately describe different drone photography techniques is top notch. Having flown drones before, I bought this book looking to gain a deeper understanding of drone photography. I was not let down. While there was a decent amount of text information, the pictures are really what sparked my creative juices. The author is clearly a subject matter expert. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to buy a drone. Also makes a good coffee table book.

I would highly recommend that anyone who's got even an inkling of interest in drone photography purchase this book! The author does a wonderful job of conveying an emotive story through pictures. The composition and expression captured in each image leave me in awe. I'm very happy I got this book. Even if you don't have an interest in drone photography, you'll appreciate the quality of each image. Beyond looking, it's a feeling I get when I look at the photographer's work that can't be described with words. You'll understand when you get the book!

This book was a lifesaver on our trip to France. It explains the unique way the French view the world, and outlines ways to negotiate the country (and especially phrases to use to let the French know we were't rude buffoons). It's our experience that the French, even Parisiennes, are lovely hosts and welcome tourists when we indicate a knowledge of their sensitivities. I've given copies of the book to several friends, and I never visit France without reviewing the book. Highly recommended.

Before our 3rd European trip I purchased this book and what a difference it made. Friends used to comment that the French were unfriendly. On our first two trips we thought the French were just a little too reserved. If our friends had read this book, they would have realized how much they missed by starting their trip without understanding the 2 or 3 basic rules of courtesy in France.If you approach someone and fail to say "hello" when their culture is based upon simple beginnings to a conversation, it is any surprise that the person doesn't jump to befriend you? Polly taught us the very simple means of being polite that opened the French to us. Suddenly we knew the simple secrets that caused the French to go out of their way for us.If you are going to France, you must read this book. Plus it is a fun read!

I've only just begun to read it, but, while valuable, doesn't seem to "flow" as well as her book "French or Foe" (that one gets five stars+). Might change my mind once I get into it more. However, still very glad I got it. It one has an open mind to at least be accepting of cultural differences, if not appreciating them, then both books would enhance any visit to France. But if one is NOT willing to look at other cultures other than their own of having any validity, then both books would be a waste of time. Many Americans are like the latter.

If you want to understand the French, buy this book. It's filled with all sorts of useful information, whether you are planning to just visit briefly or live in France for an extended period. Out of the dozen or so books I have purchased on France/Paris, this is one of the most helpful in helping me plan for my upcoming trip there.

I just got back from Paris, and I am so glad I read "Savoir Flair!" and "French or Foe." These two books prepared me for my trip and helped to make it even more pleasurable. I loved Paris! In fact, I loved it so much, I'm going back in August, so two trips in a matter of three months!The people of France were nothing but welcoming. Everyone was so nice. The French people went out of their way to be kind to me. I know for a fact that because of reading these books, I knew what to expect and how to handle myself in their environment. Everyone should read Polly Platt's books and take a few French lessons before they go to France, if they want to get the most out of their time there.I am now going to reread these books before I go again. I have purchased many books about France, but these were by far the most helpful.

This book takes a different slant than a normal DK or Fodors guide book - it allows the reader to get a sense of what it is like to visit France from a cultural perspective. While it is somewhat dated - the French culture has not changed that much and this gives a very helpful view of how to enjoy your experience and interact with the French in a way that is pleasing both to the visitor and the French.My concerns with the book (the reason I gave a 4 star rating) relate to the age of the book (published in 2000) and the fact that it appears the author is somewhat enamored with name dropping and high class living. The age of the book can be offset by purchasing a current guidebook (DK Guides is a good one) for current tourist type information.Other that these issues, I highly recommend the book.

Savoir-Flair was fun to read, and gave a great insight into the mindset of the French and Parisians. It was just slightly out of date (francs were the currency when it was written). It helped me prepare for my first trip to Paris this fall.

From about 1955 to 1965 many young men in the USA were obsessed with fashion. This reproduction of the Japanese original has dozens of photos of men at Ivy League colleges during that era.I am old enough to remember older guys coming back from college wearing these styles. Today, it would be difficult to distinguish between the clothes worn by men who are in college versus young men panhandling outside of a homeless shelter.Some people will notice many that many of the photos are a bit fuzzy or faded. The original book is fifty years old and this edition is basically a photocopy of those ancient photos with a new English translation.

This is, according the publisher, a facsimile reproduction of the original 1965 book, originally, and i think exclusively, published in Japanese.Its an interesting piece of history, almost anthropology- taking a look around any campus today can yield an interesting comparison.This is NOT as the publisher has said, a high quality jcrew catalog from last season. The shots are 'on the street' not fashion set ups.What it is: A couple of Japanese men's photos and observations from a trip to America - published for a Japanese audience, presumably who had interest in dissecting the Ivy mystique. The mystique, and that era, are long gone, nevertheless i find it interesting to see how another culture, who admired us, viewed us.IF you buy the book with that understanding - then it's a good value for the price and interesting read. If you are expecting a Ralph Loren store window you'll be in for a disappointment.

It would be difficult for any book to live up to the extravagant praise the second coming of "Take Ivy" received on some of the styleblogs I read. Long available only in the rare and expensive Japanese original or in samizdat copies, the English-language release of "Take Ivy" some 45 years after it was first published was to be a milestone in menswear journalism ... even a touchstone for a new generation.So I have to admit a bit of disappointment that I wasn't entirely blown away by "Take Ivy." The photos are interesting, if often a bit grainy, but certainly illustrative of the "Ivy League" style of dress in 1965. I particularly enjoyed the text, written as it was by a Japanese author for a Japanese audience eager to know more about the trendy Ivy style. "As a Japanese man," he writes at one point, "I struggle to conceive of `campus wear' or `college fashion.' It is because we Japanese have been put under the spell of having to wear school uniforms. Japanese students are confined to wearing a stand-up collar jacket, day in and day out for many years. Having come from such a background, even scratching the surface of the general campus wear and college fashion is, undeniably, a daunting task" (p. 122).Undeniably. If there isn't much earth-shattering about "Take Ivy," it is still a useful reference to its particular time and place, and an entertaining time capsule for those of us who prefer a classic approach to men's style. A commenter on one of the styleblogs I mentioned above pointed out that nowhere in these photos is anyone wearing either Sperry Top Siders or LL Bean's Maine Hunting Boots, the supposed be-all and end-all of prep style. And while that is (undeniably, as our author would say) true, "Take Ivy" dates from 1965 while The Official Preppy Handbook, the satire that took on a life of its own as a lifestyle handbook, dates from 1980. Even in the overlapping but not identical worlds of Ivy, preppy, and American Trad style, things can change over 45 or even 15 years. "Take Ivy" is a useful indicator of how much has changed on campus and, in a certain corner of men's style, how blessedly little has changed.

This is an incredible book. It's fascinating to look at the pictures from this era. Within a few years after these pictures had been taken, the ivy look had vanished from college campuses. Kids at ivy schools began dressing just like college students at every other college.

Beautiful photography. I saw the pictures with accompanying Japanese text years ago. Upon advice of John Tinseth, I decided to pick this up, and I enjoy flipping through it from time to time. It's really an interesting look at a different time.

I've always wanted to see this book, but until now it was very expensive if you found an old copy. Now available and in English, this 1965 style book is fun to look at and read and a great resource. It is interesting that most of the guys and clothes pictured can be seen walking the streets today. These classic Ivy basics are still the norm, even with slight modifications over the years. If you're into fashion history this book is required.

Great book and an amazing historical reference on the roots of the Ivy/Trad/Prep style in the Northeast. As a California native and too young to remember the heyday, this was a great way to become familiar with the origins of this now-ubiquitous menswear style.

Not the original, that's been out of print for decades but this pays homage to it. It's a very basic book but a nice throwback to Ivy Style. A great book to flip through.

For more than thirty years, Peter Rosenberger has personally traveled the path of the family caregiver. Through this journey, Peter discovered a caregiver can not only survive, but thrive in the midst of oftentimes grim circumstances. In an unparalleled journey with his wife Gracie, he has navigated a medical nightmare that mushroomed to 80 major operations. Furthermore, Gracie suffered the amputation of both legs, as well as enduring dozens of additional procedures. These difficult experiences led Peter to work with more than 80 treating physicians in 12 hospitals and 7 medical insurance companies. All of this caused medicals bills soaring to more than $10 million. Through his journey, Peter developed a firm grasp of the healthcare issues faced by families with disabilities. I've heard all this before. If this book enlightened you, then you've been under a rock too long. Or, maybe you are just very young. And some wisdom I've gained in my two caregiving adventures isn't even in there.On the plus side, it's a concise reminder to remember to take care of yourself if you are also a caregiver. Could be a thoughtful gift for someone who is suddenly in that role for the first time. But for me, it was a waste of a few bucks and an hour or so of my day. (A fast read!)

There was a review that suggested purchasing the book along with Hallmarks of the Southwest written by her husband. I did this. There are a lot of Hopi Hallmarks in this book, that are missed in the other. The way they are laid out is the problem. There is not an understandable order at first glance. It was helpful to find a name, but there was little information about the names. Had to use her husbands book for that. The history of how things got started is a good read.

I'm glad that this book features the stories of so many black history makers we don't often hear about instead of the same old famous figures. I had never heard of some of them like Mark Dean, Christopher Gardner, Leanna Archer who made (like the title says) amazing contributions to the world .... I'm getting another copy of this book as a gift for my grandchild. I got the Kindle version - but I'm getting the hard copy too because the colorful illustrations make this book really beautiful. It'd be a great gift or coffee table book as well.

A beautiful collection of short accounts of 50 legendary Black people, not JUST Americans, who have been influential in the history of the world. Each includes a positive affirmation and opens the door to conversations every parent should have with his/her child about the world and how to act and react to social injustices. This book should be read by people of every skin color.

This book was a great buy. It’s actually the first book that I can read to my kids that is not all fanciful and imaginary. The book is extensive and has many easy to read stories of heroes in black history. Each personality is summed up in 1-2 pages and the ideas that are found in the writings give the impetus to discuss and teach a lot of points of morality and inspiration to the kids. The funny thing is that I bought it for my kids but ended up learning a lot myself. An excellent buy.

I love reading this at night with my daughter. It has unexpected people diverse fields and after every person it has encouraging words.

This book of bedtime stories is the perfect thoughtful, educational gift that will elevate the way a child dreams! I love that each story is written in a conversational tone, with moments built-in to check in with your child and draw them into the narrative by asking questions they can answer as you read together. And the way that it clearly defines terms so often thrown around (from leadership to respect to heroism), is refreshing and instructive - both for children and the grownups reading with them.

My five year old and I have really enjoyed this book so far. However, the wording in the dedication at the front I thought was a little negative. It's dedicated to everyone who has ever been told they couldn't make it and had their dreams crushed or something like that. Which is fine. And as a person who has, I appreciate that. I just prefer things to be worded in the affirmative in stories designed for kids. After all, even kids who have never had their dreams crushed outright need positive role models and uplifting messages. And you don't have to have had that happen to you to find inspiration in the stories. I thought it was a really dark note on which to start out such a positive collection of success stories.

This book offers a great selection of black heroes who serve as an inspiration to the next generation. I feel my children can really learn a lot from this book. Thankfully, they were really into it the first few nights that we read to them. And they really love the positive affirmations at the end of the book. Theses stories definitely will help their self-esteem and their pride in their history and in their culture. Great job by the author.
