Dr. Jim McClave is currently President and CEO of Info Tech, Inc., a statistical consulting and software development firm with an international clientele. STUDENTS BEWARE!!!! The item title of this textbook, says "Pearson eText -- Access Card Package". It doesn't come with it AT ALL. That was a $110 purchase when it doesn't include the access card package. It does say, "Access codes and supplements are not guaranteed with rentals". So basically its a crap shoot if you get it or not. Tried to contact the seller to no avail. Make sure you find out it comes with the textbook first.

This book does a terrible job explaining the content. Some concepts are presented with pages of examples and others get a one-paragraph explanation & then moves on. I spent so much time on the internet trying to inderstand what the book was saying (or not saying) that I ended up buying a second book to help me understand the concepts I was trying to learn with this book. The chapters are stuffed full of practice questions, but it does not explain the answers for the practice questions. If you get a question wrong, you are left on your own to figure out why & how they arrived at the correct answer. The tone of the book is rather condescending.

Did not come with an access code (as advertised). When I contacted amazon...the only solution was to return it and rent another. They also recommended that I pay for overnight shipping myself. Although the book is advertised as having an access code, it says in the fine print that the codes are not guaranteed. My class has now started and now I don't have an access code to do the homework. Although I have had great experiences with Amazon Rentals, this has been disappointing and the title is very misleading.

I never had a good understanding of statistics until I read this book. Chapter 6 is where it all came together and I finally saw the light. Of course, it is important to have a good grasp of the foundational material leading up to that point. Let me say that if a student does not know the difference between a probability distribution and a sampling distribution, they do not understand statistics. Those are two very different things, and I don't think this subtle yet profound concept is emphasized enough in most introductory statistics courses. It is a shame, but I was in that place of darkness myself for many years.This book does well to dispel such ignorance through guided examples in each section and plenty of similar exercises at the end. There are even answers to odd-numbered problems in the appendix so you can check your work. I also love the flow charts and diagrams at the end of the chapters. They really help visually organize all the concepts floating around. Perhaps the best feature of all (especially if the student is using online homework accompanying the text) is the collection of blue boxes scattered throughout. They highlight important formulas (as well as necessary criteria to use those formulas, in some cases) so they are easy to find. Lastly, there are fun biographical boxes about influential statisticians throughout history.In summary, I highly recommend this book. If you are willing to read it thoroughly, follow the examples, and do the exercises as necessary (especially chapter 6), it is quite possible you will truly understand statistics. If you are a typical disinterested student who is just taking this course because it's required for your major, I also recommend this book because of it's user friendly approach for beginners. Well written. Well organized. Well done!

You do not get every chapter. Apparently chapters 13, 14, and 15 are on a CD but not a part of the Kindle version. Kindle being a digital download does not provide access to these chapters. Am a bit miffed for the 150 dollar price I paid for the Kindle version but did not get the full book. Very shortsighted whether Kindle or the publishers, I do not know. Very fustrating!

The used book arrived in a shorter time than promised. The seller included a new CD as well which I appreciate tremendously. The seller is absolutely fantastic. The condition of the book is exactly as described by the seller. I will buy my next book from this seller.I find the book to be an excellent teaching tool for statistics. The authors did a marvelous job in their extensive accurate well-organized presentation. The authors were helped by several high powered groups (mostly PhDs) to perfect the book. The illustrating examples are from all aspects of life, well explained and thought out. The exercises illustrate the material very well.It is very easy to tell that a lot of work and high-level expertise went into this book. I am very impressed. It is well worth the high price. If you can't afford the latest edition, buy the previous edition used copy (this won't work for students since they need the same edition used for the class).I love everything about this book. I highly recommend it for those seeking to learn Statistics.

Well its an easy to read statistics book. After purchasing the book I got a B+ in my college stats class the examples were really easy to follow and the solutions were all on chegg which made learning really easy. Recommend the book for college stats.

This is by far the most satisfying of all Tolkien calendars, because it is the most real and personal rendering of Middle Earth by any artist.Alan Lee and others have done some good work, but this was Tolkien's world and these are his images. Sure, Orthanc is less severe in Tolkien's imagination than in Jackson's film, but Orthanc was never intended to be portrayed as an evil fortress? Originally built by Men of Gondor, Orthanc served as an impregnable fortress. In Sindarin, it means `Forked Height', in reference to the four pinnacles of `hard, glossy black stone, welded into a single tower five hundred feet high'". It was later deserted as the Dứnedain moved north, and Saruman - ever in need of feeding his ego - took up residence there. For those familiar only with the movies, this drawing might seem like a let down. I hope that I've squared this away somewhat. The movie overdid it.I have always admired Tolkien, revered him with a sense of awe. He wrote a classic children's novel (The Hobbit) and another less well known children's book, Letters from Father Christmas (which he also illustrated). He wrote one of the most influential novels of the 20th century, The Lord of the Rings, which was not only a remarkable work of literature but spawned an entire genre (and, unfortunately, some rather poor imitators). Beyond that, he wrote remarkable poetry, much of which can be found in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and in The Lays of Beleriand. But wait - there's more. He wrote mythology. Mythology that is to me, at least, more interesting than any existing "real" mythology. I'm referencing The Silmarillion, of course. As if that isn't enough, Tolkien was an accomplished artist, an Oxford don, translated Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and held various chairs throughout his illustrious scholarly career. (Where in the world did he find the time to do all of this?)As to the calendar, Rivendell's beauty is captivating; Lothlorien is as it should have appeared in the movie; Fangorn, with its dark, oppressing watercolors is frightening and foreboding, a forest one would be wise to avoid; Helm's deep, while less impressive as a work of art, is unique as it offered Tolkien a visual image from which to work while planning this massive battle; the leaves from the book of Mazarbul were perhaps my favorite inclusion, if for no other reason that it caused me to admire Tolkien even more; Minas Tirith, though unfinished, showed signs of grandeur; and the covers that Tolkien himself drew for the three books are better than any I have seen. The drawing for the Two Towers ends the debate of exactly which towers Tolkien was referring to in the title. He drew Minas Morgul and Orthanc. I think he's the expert on this.Honestly, I'm not sure why The Brother's Hildebrandt bothered to put out a LOTR calendar. I'm sure it had to do with milking the 50th anniversary for all its worth, and that I haven't seen their names on anything of merit in years until the LOTR movies were being made, but their art doesn't come close to depicting the depths of Tolkien's work. They were best served as artists for The Sword of Shannara - which was derivative and shallow. If you're thinking about which calendar to buy, stop thinking right now. (This led to his cropping some elements of some drawings, like March's Moria Gate, which displays both the full picture and the part that was trimmed off; and totally discarding others, like the abortive cityscape of Steinborg shown for September.) This perfectionism led to some absolutely beautiful productions. I am particularly fond of April's Lothlorien, showing the mallorns in full flower, and of February's view of Rivendell looking east: a tumbled landscape of stone, water, and trees.Those who have become used to the artwork of others in previous Tolkien calendars, and those whose primary view of Middle earth was shaped by the Peter Jackson films, may be a bit put off by these drawings by Tolkien himself. July's Orthanc, for example, provides a rather modest view of Saruman's tower compared to that seen in the movie. Those of us who are true lovers of Middle earth, however, will find that these drawings are especially beautiful, regardless of any intrinsic aesthetic value, because they allow us to see Tolkien's own vision as it unfolded in his mind and flowed from his pen and brush.

This is a pretty awesome book! I ordered it for my 13 year old son for Christmas along with some rope. Of course I’ve played with it first. 😆 I think he’s really going to enjoy this gift. The book comes with a lot of different knots and seems very detailed its easy to follow and understand. Super happy with this purchase!

My grandkids enjoy learning (and competing with) new skills. This book, along with 8' of 1/2" rope was a great gift for all of them...girls&boys. Family gatherings now include knot-tying races instead of video games.

Some of these knots I knew, the others will definitely be an assist.

The basic knots in the initial part of the book are pretty standard. It is restricted to a short list of the most useful common knots. After that, the book covers climbing and survival knots, which you do not normally find in a knot book. Overall, a very good addition to any collection of knot books.

Very useful and clear with pictures and many extras, like survival techniques. Many knots shown.

Love this book some may not be easy to get at first but they were also not extra hard. This has came in very handy.

I have been reading many books about Muslims in many different times and places. This memoir stands apart from them in that it is a first person account of life in the Sultan's homes by a woman who was born there and lived there until her late teens.The most enjoyable parts of the book, for me, were when she described the matrimonial ceremony, and described the day to day protocol for eating, praying, and visiting friends.More than once, I was forced to pause and seriously consider some of the Arab customs pertaining to feeding the destitute, and the system of taxation levied upon the wealthy, whereby they had to tithe 10% of all their gains to the community. And this was done without laws imposed from the state, but rather as an unquestioned responsibility to the religion.Finally, I learned a lot from the author's ability to jump from Zanzibar to Germany in Victorian times. She has a unique view on both Eastern and European culture. She often come out with some zingers as she compare the two cultures which make one stop and really think about the superiority of one over the other.For anyone who is interested in Arab culture from 150 years ago, I beg you to read this book. It is undoubtedly more authentic than any scholarly treatise of the time. It is a delight. Do not discount it. Do not let it pass you by.

Because I have recently become involved in a dance troupe involving Middle Eastern, Romani, Persian, etc. costumes, the cover of this memoir immediately caught my eye. The autobiography was much more readable than I expected from something written 150 years ago. Just as in any classic book from long ago, it takes awhile to get used to the rhythm of historical dialogue. Add to that the fact that the author was virtually uneducated, and that the book is written through her eyes in a time that was very different than now, it could have been very hard to read. However, the true story of a woman raised in a harem (with all the political intrigue you might imagine), was instead hard to put down! Her down to earth details of royal Muslim life, like wearing hajib, explanation of Sharia law, experiencing Ramadan, and even her very unpleasant view of black Africans made me wish for more of her outspoken voice. I do admit, the tale begins to drag when she falls in love, moves to Germany, and converts to Christianity, but, she was writing about her life in Zanzibar and so her story had to end. I truly enjoyed reading this unusual memoir of a real Arabian princess and would recommend to fans of women's history in particular.

I bought this thinking it'd give a bit more insight as to the life of females in Islamic Zanzibar but it fails. The author seems completely ignorant as to what is going on around her, and to her. At one point in the early part of the book she claims that contrary to popular belief, males and females are treated completely equally, with girls just as likely to inherit as boys in a family. And then she goes on just a little later about how her brothers are all given a house and servants when they come of age, yet the sisters aren't given that same advantage (probably because the girls will be married off and become the responsibility of a husband). She says one thing and then almost immediately contradicts it with the reality--and she doesn't even realize she's just made herself a liar. She leads a fairly easy life of privilege and doesn't seem to have much interest in anything other than herself and her pleasures so she misses so much in life. It got pretty boring pretty fast and I began to question why she bothered to write a memoir, consider there's nothing really to remember. She really hasn't lead anything close to an interesting life and hasn't done much with the time on earth she has been given.

That this book was originally published in 1907, and I expected it to be ponderous to read. But it was very easy to read, highly intelligent, well organized, and a fascinating look at the culture of Zanzibar in the late 1800s. The author was the daughter of the Oman / Zanzibar sultan, who left to marry a German merchant. She makes very good points about the strengths and challenges weaknesses of both the Arab culture and the European culture. Well worth an investment of time to read.

I found this book to be very interesting in that the Princess tells her story herself and brings the reader into a life not known by many people. She in describes every day life in Zanzibar during the late 1800's and early 1900's and even royalty in those days had it's drama with family members.I found her writing to be a little dry and juvenile at times, but it was nicely written.

this was good for the traveller to zanzibar to get a touch of insight. i have to say, her opinions on the nature of "negro slaves" was quite off-putting, but i had to just remind myself that she was of a different culture and a different time. also, zanzibar was big into the slave trade at the time. ugly history, no doubt. other than that, it was a really interesting insight to what life was like in a place that, if you visit today, you can't even compare to your home. but take it back 100+ years... very interesting...

Whether or not Reute is truly an Arabian princess shouldn't be disputed, as the detailed account of customs, courts, inside secrets, and life as royalty is too accurate to possibly be a lie. The blatant, unapologetic way the authoress describes, and confronts is compelling enough so that one does not want to put the book down until it is finished.

I found this memoir fascinating and lively. The author is bright, lively and a keen observer. That said, it was written during the Victorian era, in German, and then translated. So the writing and viewpoint reflect that era. Just imagine an Arabian princess from an idyllic tropical island who moved to stuffy, cold, Victorian Germany. Her views on the cultural differences are insightful, refreshing and funny. Just be prepared to understand her Victorian cultural viewpoint and writing style.

I heard of My Stroke of Insight by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor after attending a stroke support group meeting as an assignment while I was a student in a Physical Therapist Assistant program. My father also had a stroke in 2008 so I was interested in reading about a medical professional’s account of what was happening to their body as they themselves were experiencing a stroke. This book was much more than I was expecting. As a medical professional myself now I wasn’t sure if Dr. Bolte Taylor would sound very clinical and dive into lecturing, but it was quite the opposite. Dr. Bolte Taylor did explain some neuro anatomy and structures affected during her stroke but she expressed her thoughts in such detail they were so powerful, human and gripping. As I read, I was so moved by her courage and determination to push through and focus on her recovery. I loved how she reflected on relearning everything and appreciated her right hemisphere where creativity lies waiting to be explored and how she embraced her artistic side after her stroke. This is a fantastic book I highly recommend for anyone even if you don’t have a relative who’s had a stroke or even if you don’t work in the medical field Dr. Bolte Taylor explains her story in a way that’s so moving any reader will walk away from it with compassion and so many lessons.

You get a pretty amazing book detailing the experience and recounting a remarkable journey back to recovery.On December 10, 1996, Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, a 37-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist, suffered a major brain hemorrhage of the left side of her brain. The story reads much like a travel blog you would see on an adventure motorcycling website, such as ADVriders, and takes you on the journey of a couple selling all their possession and hitting the road on their old BMW sport touring bike.Some gripes about the book was the lack of direction it had. There was no clear goal for the book, do not let the title fool you as there is very little detail about the finances involved in their travel. But at the end of the book you find out that it is not over yet as the adventure is still going on.What the book does very well is give you a chronological story of a man, his partner, and their adventure on two wheels. It's an easy, pleasant read, and is worth it for the low price tag alone (5.99 at the time of purchase for a hard copy). A nice read to relax next to a fire while you are waiting for the feet of snow to clear out from outside your porch, or to take a break at the office while you think about your own two wheels out in the parking lot.The author takes the jump on something others such as myself only dream of doing. Their struggles and the lessons they learned are seen through hindsight and you see how it shapes their adventure.The qualify of the print is nice. Big font. No misprinting. Vibrant color.UPDATE: Previously there was one misspelling found, it has long been corrected now.

Good book for anyone who is looking at living and working overseas during their long term journey. Not for vacation riders. Most people get a few weeks to a month off work for a vacation. This book is about riders who take a lifestyle choice to ride throughout Western and Eastern Europe and quit their jobs to do so. Good luck to them and those like them. I'd find camping for months not weeks a bit of a drag. Kind of like a long term camp in the army or a long term hiking trip, you spend half of your time looking after your kit and the other half getting from to A to B. Fun for some. I found it a bit of a chore, since there's so much small stuff you need to look after, so you're not really that relaxed etc.

The most boring book I've read on motorcycle adventure. Good grief, didn't anyone have the guts as a friend to tell the author the truth? I couldn't even finish it.If you are looking for a cool motorcycle adventure book then stay clear of this.I will sell my copy real cheap if you are interested.

Nice to Read, I enjoyed reading this book, make a map tracking of the journey and like it very much .... Very useful some tips .... Would like some pictures in the book, and also would like if they will be more specific in the budget management , never know how much was their Daily Budget for food , petrol, Sleeping. .. How much money they carry and how long will last... And when finished what's the plans

If you ride as a traveler you'll love this story as I did. Written with great description of countryside, city's, hotels and food a clear picture is painted of day's and months on the road. A lifestyle as stated on the cover. Having never been to Europe this is like having a friend tell you about their experience. Best part about the ending... "it's to be continued".

This is a good read, not overly heavy on detail about the actual motorcycling, more of a general travelogue. A nice approach to world travel without the big price tag, and a frank but refreshing view of the people met along the way.

Was a fairly good book about travel. Not so much about motorcycle travel. They just happen to be on a motorcycle.

Loved reading about the great adventures this couple are doing. I hope all your travels will continue to be adventures and pray for your safety.
