Having a hit movie, "Mean Girls," being a head writer at a legendary comedy show, "Saturday Night Live," and producing her own TV show, "30 Rock," didn't keep Tina Fey from having a crappy honeymoon. In fact, it sounded terrible. Despite her resources and fame, Fey and her husband had their trip interrupted by an engine fire and extreme on-board boredom. Seems her hubby doesn't like to fly. Thus the boat. This tidbit and others, such as how to dress to repel men in college, can be found in Fey's "Bossypants." It's a sometimes really unflattering look at her life. And it's hilarious. I picked up up after letting it sit on my bedside table for at least a year and was pleasantly surprised. She mentioned how she got her scar. (What scar? Oh, weird, she has a scar on her face. Didn't know.) She talks about her dad, her Greek eyebrows, her job at the YMCA, climbing a mountain with a serious geek she had a crush on and other pre-TV stuff. Then Fey jumps into what got her started in show business. On Second City's C league, or Blue Team, she learned she had a passion/affinity for improvisation. She loved it. She wasn't a natural actor, but she enjoyed getting $75 per performance. Big money. Somehow, she got on as a writer for SNL. She thought she blew it during her interview with Lorne Michaels. Don't finish his sentences, she was warned. She did. She discusses her most famous impersonation, that of the former Alaska governor: "I can see Russia from my house." The book is pretty short and never boring. Tina Fey put a lot of herself apparently in the book. I say this because she said she put a lot of herself in her TV show. And that's pretty cool.

Like an episode of SNL, Tina Fey's book reads like a quick succession of sketch comedies, some funnier than others. But I laughed out loud quite a bit. It got to be so bad, that I was forced to stop listening to the audio version (read by Fey herself) during work hours as my loud giggles, snickers, and snorts were unprofessional, to say the least. For me, the most enjoyable parts centered around the backstage shenanigans and politics of Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock. Hearing Tina recount her first day as a writer on SNL, when she draws the short straw and has to be the one to tell host Sylvester Stallone that he needs to "enunciate" more, was pure comedy gold, and I was at once laughing at her, as well as laughing with her. There's nothing too deep here. Even the story of how she received the trademark scar on her cheek is glossed over with (funny) jokes and snide remarks. But did we really expect anything else from the most recognizable anchor of the Weekend Update? If you can get the audio version, do. It's worth it to hear Fey's self-deprecating voice narrate her own words.

Tina Fey's book was fine. That's it. I had high expectations after hearing how it was laugh out loud funny, but even if I went in with no expectations I don't think this would have gotten more than 3 stars from me. I didn't laugh out loud once and only occasionally cracked a smile The book is a collection of essays/stories that lacked focus as a whole and didn't have much to offer individually. I wasn't expecting anything profound, but they had nothing to say and the sarcastic humor often just felt too mean to be funny. I'm a fan of Tina Fey and find her hilarious in general, but the humor didn't come through her book for me. Some stories were enjoyable but I was left disappointed as a whole. I still gave it 3 stars because I think it could be a great read for the right reader, but for me it was just okay.

What a letdown, this is the least profound and insightful nonfiction book I think I've ever read. It's not a memoir, not an autobiography as it is a collection of essays that reveal absolutely nothing about its author, Tina Fey. It was as TIna Fey wrote it as an SNL character. The writing is so self aware, cringe-worthy in its self-deprecation. The only section that garnered any genuine emotion is when she (very briefly) talked about the incident that caused the scar on her face. The stories completely lack any depth, reveal nothing about what makes Tina Fey tick. The stories she chooses to share--her stint working the front desk of a decrepit YMCA, literally following a college crush up a mountain--aren't interesting. I think this is what happened:Fey's Agent/Manager: You know, there's so much interest in you, what makes you tick. You should write a book about yourself.Fey: No! No one's interested in me. I wouldn't know what to write. My private life is private--I don't want to share stories about me and my family to the world.Fey's Agent/Manager: I think the publisher would be willing to pay an advance in the high six figures.Fey: Well, let me think about it.So this is what we got, a group of stories that have nothing to do with each other, told by the character "Tina Fey" (versus the real person), that are about as deep as a mud puddle. Big disappointment.

I love Tina Fey, she is the greatest. I expected this book to be the greatest. It reads like you are sitting with her in a bar and she is telling you little stories from her life. As stories in a bar tend to go, some are far wittier and more interesting than others. It is a pleasant little book that is about as deep as most SNL skits. If you can buy it at a discount, as I did, then it's a quick read and will bring a few laughs, and enough smiles to justify a couple of hours of reading.

1. Kung Fu, the Way of the WarriorBefore I was born who was I?After I am born who am I?Respect yourself, everybody will respect you.Understand yourself, everybody will understand you. There are mirrors all around you, strive to see and understand yourself.Strive to have the heart of a Buddha.Stop doing bad things, only do good.Do whatever you can to help others. In these ways you help yourself.Help yourself, and you help the world.Amituofo!--Sifu Shi Yan MingIn a typical loft space in Manhattan's hip Greenwich Village, a not-so- typical New Yorker is warming up. He is Sifu Shi Yan Ming, a 34th- generation warrior monk hailing from China's Shaolin Temple, birthplace of Chan Buddhism 1,500 years ago and mecca of all martial arts. Although he is not tall by American standards, his almost impossibly trim body gives an impression of awesome physical power even when he is simply tying the laces of his white training sneakers. With his shaved head and his sternly chiseled good looks, he is the very ideal of the legendary kung fu warrior. As he begins to move, the impression is more than confirmed. When he stretches his spine, bending forward from the hips and lowering his torso until he can grip his ankles and touch the ground with the top of his head, he makes folding himself in half like a wallet look effortless. Then he executes a series of dazzling kicks, his feet flashing as though he's about to kick a hole in the antique tin ceiling 8 feet above his head. When he punches the air, his fists explode out and back with blinding speed and what one imagines would be devastating force. Then he leaps, and his entire body corkscrews in midair, as though he had ball bearings in place of a lower spine. It's an amazing display of strength, precision, lightning speed, and incredible agility. He might even go on to break a stack of bricks with his head, slice a stack of boards with his hand, or lean into the points of three spears with his throat--his throat!--and bend the spears rather than be impaled.Sifu is a world-renowned master of the martial arts. International action movie stars like Jackie Chan, Chow Yun-Fat, and Michelle Yeoh respectfully address him as "Sifu"--typically translated into English as "Master." So have the thousands of students who have come to this loft space, the U.S.A. Shaolin Temple, to train under him.A young woman, one of his students, enters the space. Sifu pauses, his body impeccably poised in front of a snarling-dragon mural on the Chinese-red wall. There isn't a dot of perspiration on him. He's not even breathing heavily."Amituofo, Sifu!" she calls out."Amituofo!" he replies energetically.Pronounced ah-mee-toh-foh, it is the name of one of the three Paradise Buddhas, Amituo ("fo" signifies Buddha in Chinese). Saying his name is an international greeting for Buddhists. It is said to show respect, and as a blessing and a prayer. Buddhists chant it as an aid to meditation and often use it as a replacement for common utterances like hello and good-bye, excuse me, and thank you, as a way to stay always mindful of their spiritual lives."Merry Christmas!" Sifu then adds--even though it's late spring. The student smiles. "Happy New Year!" she replies. It's something else Sifu and his students say often, all year round. Even the letter carrier responds with a laughing "Happy New Year!" when he drops off the day's mail. It's one of Sifu's ways of reminding everyone around him that life is a beautiful gift, and we should celebrate it not just on a few special holidays like Christmas and New Year's, but every day, every hour, every minute--"8 days a week," he likes to say, "and 366 days a year."More students begin to gather in the space, piling out of the small elevator in the front, or bounding up the three flights of narrow stairs in the back. The temple lights up with smiles and laughter, with ringing cries of "Amituofo!" and "Happy New Year!" as they hurry into their training uniforms. Twenty, 30, 40 students appear for this particular class. They are male and female, of all sizes, shapes, ages, and ethnicities. They come from all over New York City, from the Bronx to Brooklyn and Queens, or travel in from Long Island and New Jersey. Like Sifu, some of them have come to New York from other countries--Switzerland, India, Germany, Brazil, Korea, Italy, Canada, and Austria, among others. Sifu's students include college students and professors, blue-collar and office workers, movie stars and rap stars, business executives and retail salespeople, yoga instructors, a cop, a doorman, a young Italian apprentice chef, an orchestral composer. Children from as young as 3 to 14 also train at the temple, in their own afternoon classes. For all their diverse backgrounds, Sifu's students act nothing like strangers who have dragged themselves to the typical gym for a routine class. Everyone greets everyone else by name or nickname, and Sifu knows them all. Everyone is happy and excited to be here. It feels like a large family gathering on a holiday, with Sifu as its patriarch. "He's like a father to us," you often hear students say, even though some of them are older than he is."I was amazed at the feeling I had just walking in the door," Sifu's student and disciple Shi Heng Xu recalls of her first time at the U.S.A. Shaolin Temple. "There was this feeling of bliss."Incredibly, the buzz of high spirits is maintained through the next 2 hours of extremely strenuous training in kung fu, or Chan Quan. (Although "kung fu" is the universally recognized term in the West, Chan Quan--pronounced chan chwan--is the proper name for Chan Buddhism or martial arts. In this book we will use "kung fu" and "Chan Quan" interchangeably.) Some of the students in today's class have trained with Sifu for years; some just started today. Some can execute startling leaps and kicks with power and precision; others are just learning. But there is absolutely no sense of competition, showing off, or self-consciousness. In fact, it is just the opposite: Everyone cheers everyone else on, encouraging each student to strive for his or her personal best, which is all Sifu asks of any student."Sifu sees everybody's potential," says actor John Leguizamo, who has trained at the temple. "His method is so democratic and fair that way. You only compete with yourself, even though you may see people performing way better than you and way worse than you. It puts your life into perspective in a simple, martial arts kind of way, without words and fancy therapy sessions.""We all sweat together," Heng Xu explains. "We all go through the pain together. It breaks down your barriers and helps you to be yourself, not just in here but out in the rest of your life."David, a businessman, makes the 2-hour drive into Manhattan from Long Island three or four times a week to train. In his early forties, he had some 20 years' experience with other exercise and martial arts programs when he first came to the U.S.A. Shaolin Temple."I can tell you this is the best workout I've ever had," he says after 8 months of training at the temple. "Nobody ever made me work the way Sifu does." But he stresses that it is far more than just an exercise program. "This is a way to approach your whole life. Sifu has opened my head in all sorts of ways. I've noticed that people who've been coming to the temple for 2, 3 years, or more are all very successful in their lives. I don't just mean that they drive nice cars and have successful careers, although a lot of them do. I mean you can see it in their whole approach to their lives. They respect themselves. People who come to the temple just to get a workout tend not to stick with it. It's as much about the way of living as the physical training. Anybody can show you how to work out. Sifu is about showing you how to live."Wherever you are, the Shaolin Workout now offers you the same rare opportunity Sifu's New York City students enjoy: the chance to learn the fundamentals of Chan Quan from this Shaolin Temple warrior monk, and the challenge to live the most beautiful life you can. This book is absolutely unique in all the world--just like you are. No book before it, and none that will come after it, is like this book. It is not merely a book of physical exercises, or a book of mental exercises, or a book of spiritual exercises. The Shaolin Workout shows you more than a way of training. It introduces you to the warrior's way of life. The second you picked this book up and started to read these words, you began to transform yourself. The monks of Shaolin Temple have been teaching students Chan Quan for 15 centuries. The Shaolin Workout draws on this rich heritage of teaching experience. In this book, Sifu has distilled the fundamentals of kung fu into an introductory course of 28 sessions, which incorporate daily lessons in the mental discipline and spiritual principles that are as essential to Shaolin kung fu as the moves. You will not be a kung fu master when you've successfully completed these sessions. You will not learn how to break boards with your hand. Sifu will teach you the basic stretches, stances, hand strikes, and kicks that are the foundations of this ancient yet living martial art. If you choose to continue learning Chan Quan, you will have a solid base on which to build. If you choose to go no further than this program, you will still find yourself transformed, physically, mentally, and spiritually, by your having committed yourself to the program. Sifu will teach you that kung fu is far more than just another exercise program, and it promotes much more than physical health. It is a comprehensive physical, mental, and spiritual discipline. Kung fu is a way of life--a warrior's life of action. Sifu calls it "action meditation." As he guides you through a step-by-step beginner's course in kung fu, Sifu will share his philosophy of life in lessons you can carry throughout your day. If you apply yourself to all aspects of the Shaolin Workout--the mental and spiritual, as well as the physical--you will begin to transform not just your body but your life. You will develop mental clarity and calm, experience an enhanced sense of self- confidence and respect, and learn to appreciate what a beautiful gift your life is every day, every hour, every second. No one is too young or too old, too weak or heavy, too short or too tall, to train the Shaolin Workout way. You need no prior knowledge of the martial arts or any other training. At the same time, no one is too fit to benefit from training this way, either. No matter what kind of physical training you do now, you will find that the Shaolin Workout enhances your strength, stamina, balance, and grace while improving your mental outlook. That's true whether you're male or female. Chan Quan is truly gender blind. Women can be as adept at it as men, and often surpass them in speed, flexibility, and grace. Guys know how cool they look when they practice kung fu. And any guy will tell you how great women look when they do it. There is nothing more attractive than a woman who is in great shape and is as confident and poised in her life as she is in her body. Watch any kung fu movie starring Michelle Yeoh or Zhang Ziyi and you'll see for yourself. The Shaolin Workout does not teach you how to "beat people up." Even though Chan Quan is a warrior's discipline, the vast majority of people who study with Sifu never expect to get into an actual fight on the street. The essence of being a warrior is not looking for people to beat up and dominate. That's just being a bully. Learning kung fu is not "learning how to fight," and by teaching it that way, some martial arts instructors make a major error in limiting their students' mental and spiritual understanding. If you want to learn how to beat people up, this workout will be of no use to you. At the U.S.A. Shaolin Temple, Sifu tells new applicants, "If you're looking for a master to teach you how to fight, don't come to me. Go see Yoda."Yes, Sifu wants you to be able to defend yourself or others in case of an assault, and your Shaolin Workout training will help. But it won't be because you learned some fancy ways to fight. It will be because mastering the Shaolin Workout helps you to be confident in your body and mentally relaxed in moments of crisis or stress so that you can react to an attack with speed and power. The true way of the warrior is not to seek dominance over others but to achieve mastery of yourself. Kung fu helps you do that through training both your body and your mind and promoting mental clarity while it helps you build physical strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility. If you follow this program with dedication, you will find yourself standing taller and straighter, walking more confidently, moving with newfound grace, being less susceptible to aches and pains, and tiring less easily. You will also find that the enormous sense of self-esteem and accomplishment you get from mastering the movements and feeling more physically fit will radiate out through your life, helping you to tackle the world with a warrior's confidence, calm, and poise.Sifu himself is a living testament to the transformative power of kung fu. Named Gen San by his parents, he was born in 1964 in China's rural Henan Province, not far from Shaolin Temple. He was the seventh of nine children. Seven is, of course, a lucky number. It is also noteworthy that when a highly revered Buddhist monk dies, the other monks build a seven-story pagoda to honor him. Gen San was born not only in the year of the dragon, considered extremely auspicious in Chinese tradition, but on (Chinese) New Year's Day, the luckiest day in the calendar. At first, though, his life seemed anything but fortunate. His mother and father were both low-level workers in the Communist government. Like everyone else in Henan Province, and most of China, they were desperately poor. Starting in 1958, Chairman Mao's Great Leap Forward--a plan to radically restructure all of China's society and economy from a traditional agrarian base into the world's greatest industrial power--had devastated areas like Henan, uprooting whole communities and making a poor people much, much poorer. Food and medicine were scarce, and many people died.

I have had a lifetime passion for the martial arts, combat arts, combat fitness programs, and healing arts (Judo, Jujitsu, Karate-do, Boxing, Tai Chi, Qigong, Reiki and Jin Shin Do) and even though I have read huge numbers of books on these subjects I am always seeking to find more information. I recently purchased this very interesting 294 page hardcover book (The Shaolin Workout by Sifu Shi Yan Ming) from Amazon for a bargain price. This is a 28 Day program that promises if you follow this training schedule with the exercises shown in the book you will be in great physical shape. This volume goes into great detail on the biography of the author and how he finally ended up in New York City teaching his very popular Shaolin system Kung-Fu. This is a slick full color text which shows and explains how to do each of the exercise movements. Many of the exercises are easy to do; however, as you follow the program the exercises get more complex and difficult to do each week. This book is organized as follows: Chapter one covers Kung-Fu, the way of the warrior. Chapter two explains the warrior workout and is the longest chapter as it focuses specifically on the exercise routines to follow from week one to week four. Chapter three is about training further in this Kung-Fu Shaolin system. There is a lot to like about this book and if you are into Kung-Fu (No matter what style or system) this is a book you may want for your personal library. It must be emphasized that to try learning any martial art from just reading a book can be very challenging and a book, no matter how good it is, can never take the place of a qualified and competent instructor teaching you. The upside is that if you are taking a Kung-Fu style from an instructor this book can help to increase your skills.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Chair/Seated Tai Chi, Qigong and Yoga for seniors and the physically challenged).

This book is fantastic! Shi Yan Ming is very inspiring, in both his workout and his philosophy of life. His happiness and positive attitude shines through on every page. You will learn stretches, kicks, punches, and a Shaolin workout, but most importantly you will learn the philosophy of kung fu. As Master Shi Yan Ming says, "Kung fu isn't just an exercise routine. It is a philosophy of life. The action is the philosophy. The philosophy is the action."Throughout the book there are interludes of "Meditation" in which he gives insights about life in general; these are very thought-provoking and interesting. Don't skip these! They are essential to the program. The stretches and workout will get you into good shape, but this is not a book to just learn self-defense moves, it's more to use as a mind-body workout to increase health, both mental and physical, and enhance confidence. I also liked reading about his journey, how he came to be a Shaolin monk living in New York City. This book may just transform your life and your health!

The book is well written. The instructions are very clear. It gives you a set of exercises derived from Shaolin Chang Chuan, one of the many forms of martial arts used by Shaolin monks. I have been using the book for about a year and found the exercises to be extremely effective for increasing strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. Subsequently, I have lost quite bit of weight using these exercises. The book does present the material to be used within a 28 day period. However, I suspect for some it may take a little longer to understand flow of the movements. Regardless of how long it takes, you will benefit from doing the exercises in this book. As always, If you are not used to rigorous exercise check with your physician before starting something new.

This book only needs a companion DVD to get a five star rating from me. Great meditation/motivation reading at the end of each new exercise. A new(and usually more complex) stretching, punching, or kicking exercise is added to the previous day's workout over the course of 28 days. While the photos are beautiful, and the descriptions of exercises are good, the third week began to get difficult for me to follow. This is when actual video footage would be great to have. If ever a DVD becomes available for this workout, I'll buy it.

When I first got this book I thought it was going to contain so much more then it did. Besides Shi Yan Ming's bio it just contained a lot of flexibility drills. They are good drills non the less, but I was hoping for some more insights on kung fu instead of a resume of his star clientele. I would suggest this book to those looking to build great flexibility for sure.

I got this on a whim as a fun way to add variety to my workouts, but after three days of the stretching, I feel wonderful. Instructions are easy to understand without babying you, and the movements and meditations are meaningful. It won't turn you into Bruce Lee, but if you like moving meditation and want to improve your flexibility and balance, this is a fun way to do it.

The organization was really not clever: answers are at the back of each page with a question on it, which means you have to do them in order to keep from spoiling the previous question. Literally every other puzzle book I have ever had (and I've owned a lot) aggregates answers at the end - it's such an obvious thing to do. It doesn't help that pictures bleed through so much that you can clearly see them on the question side of the page - the tetris question is entirely ruined because you can see all the configurations (shown in the answer) beneath the question. The book itself says there's "no right or wrong way to proceed through the book", but that's not true: the only way to proceed is in order. Stumped on a question? You can't move on without risking getting a hint you don't want, or even the whole answer.

I just got this book the other day, so I haven't gotten through (nearly) the whole thing, but thus far, I've really enjoyed it. The puzzles I've tried are challenging but approachable. If you gravitate toward the puzzles/crossword section of the Sunday paper, it's probably worth purchasing this book. A different way to stretch your mind.

Amazing book. Love these puzzling problems and have always enjoyed his weekly posts. Recommend this for anyone who loves to think!

Too hard . Not really riddles

It was a gift and they liked it.

It’s a time machine back to 12th grade calculus.

Saw an excerpt in the latest issue of Games magazine. From that puzzle sample alone this book looks like the biggest beating of a grind of boring difficult mathematics No riddles at all. Hard Pass.

Wonderfully fun book and can’t wait to read more from this author.

Country Music Records: A Discography, 1921-1942

Review

"This is clearly the most important and best-executed American music reference book to be published in 2004. This volume is indispensable and its usefulness is enhanced because it's clearly laid out and easy to read. ...there are enough tidbits to titillate even the most jaded veteran ofdiscographies. I am profoundly grateful to Tony Russell (and his associates) for compiling Country Music Records: A Discography, 1912-1942 and to Oxford University Press for its publication. It is no surprise that my copy is already showing signs of wear less than six months after its publication.Obviously this book is unreservedly recommended and will no doubt recieve high praise and will win numerous awards--accolades that it richly deserves." --American Music"This volume has turned out to be mightily impressive, beyond even what aficionados could possibly have hoped for. I only wish that this collection had been available when I began research on my book, Country Music, USA, back in the early 1960s. My work would be greatly improved if thediscographical history of country music had been available at that time. Thankfully, future students of American vernacular music will profit tremendously from this fine and meticulously documented study. Quite expensive but a very important book for anyone doing research on country music or writing articles on the same. Wish Russell would do another covering the next ten or so years. About the only negative I see is that the only Canadians he listed is Wilf Carter (Montana Slim) and Hank Snow.

The long-awaited labor of love by respected discographers and country music experts Tony Russell and the late Bob Pinson has finally been published -- and it's been well worth the wait. The comprehensive discography is everything and more a collector of old-time country music could ask for. As well as being THE reference book on old-time country recordings, this magnum opus makes fascinating recreational reading. The sheer depth of scholarship is astounding, with collectors and discographers from around the world contributing. As Tony Russell says, though, it is regrettable that Bob Pinson didn't live to see the finished book. I have no hesitation in recommending this book. If Amazon allowed it, I'd award it a 10-star rating.

REALLY USEFUL FOR WESTERN SWING

This book is exactly what I've been looking for for some time, a discography for every Country record from 1921-1942, with session dates, accompanists, if any, with what instruments played, matrix numbers and catalog numbers of records actually issued and on what labels. A collectors' dream. Same format as Dixon & Godrich's Blues & Gospel Records 1890-1943, and Brian Rust's Jazz Records 1897-1942. I was interested in Cajun reecords, which, until this volume, were not well covered.

This product came highly recommended to me by some of the premier historians in the country music genre. It's a wonderful thing, almost miraculous, that Mr. Russell was able to put together such a monster of a research project in such a user-friendly format. Kudos to him and his team! I've spent hours looking through it and find it thoroughly informative and inspiring. I will certainly use it for all future research projects.

A great source. My only complaint is that the book is physically deficient and is falling apart.

I couldn't agree more with the rave reviews of the book itself, but the Kindle edition is a disappointment. For some reason searches don't reach the actual discography entries, as if they are in graphics mode. Big problem for research.

Every detail is collected for these pioneering recording artists. Very well organized and easy to reference. It is a perfect book!

#69,351 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I truly loved this book and did not want it to end. Every character was nicely developed and it was obvious much time went into researching this little known story about Caleb's daughter Acsah. I will certainly find it and read it for myself soon. There are about six or so errors in editing but nothing serious. No spelling errors just words misplaced here and there. It's the typos that bug me.Mrs. Towriss is a very fine author and I have read all her books. Would like a #2 for this one as the characters are so engaging and well fleshed out. This is one I will read again soon. Thanks Carole for a delightful time with Othni and his "prize of war".

I love finding new authors that I enjoy! I don't even remember how I found Carole Towriss, but I am so glad that I did.Prize of War is a well-researched Biblical fiction account of Acsah, the daughter of Caleb who was offered as a prize to the one who conquered the city of Kiriath-Sepher. I have read of her in the numerous times I've read through the Old Testament, but had never really taken much time to consider her story. I'm so glad that the author didn't just read through as I did.The author did a great job of showing customs and daily life routines from this ancient time in a way that made them part of the story instead of a lesson in how to. Some of the many activities that were included in this way were farming, brick-making, cooking, and weaving.Acsah struggled with the life change involved in moving from Hebron to her new city, she lost sight of the omnipresence of God and felt abandoned by Him. She also struggled with trusting Him instead of putting her reliance on men.Prize of War is thought-provoking, interesting, and gives a better picture of the events, times and experiences of the people of the Bible, and a great reminder that God is always with us and will never leave us or forsake us.I'm looking forward to reading more books by this author. This review was first posted on amongTheReads.net

I suppose I've mentioned a time or two that I love Biblical fiction and that Carole Towriss is one fantastic writer, but (in my humble opinion) these two facts (okay, opinions of mine) bear repeating. Prize of War is a high-five-star example.Acsah is a young Jewish woman, daughter of the Biblical commander Caleb, unable to make up her mind as to a husband. She's almost to the age where she might not even be considered marriageable. Caleb, a widower, believes he must take action. There is a nearby town, Kiriath-Sepher, that is filled with the giant Anakim. They are occupying what should be another in the land of Canaan to be now occupied by the Jews. Caleb decides to offer his daughter as a bride to the captain who can capture the impregnable city. Most plans offered to him are ridiculously simple and simple-minded. It will take something more than brute force to overwhelm the Anakim. Two men offer plans to him that are reasonable--Enosh, a bear of a man, and Othniel, his daughter's childhood playmate who would give everything he had to win Acsah.Acsah hates this arrangement, to be made a prize of war--she despises war and warriors. Warriors are never home. They're always off fighting somewhere, and you never know for sure that they will even be coming home at all. She loves her father, who is of course a warrior, but she hated the worry and fear and loneliness when he'd go off to another battle. Therefore--no husband for her! Although, she does sorta like Othni. Enosh just frightens her. What will happen? Who will win?

I m so glad I didn't read this book first. I purchased a while ago and hadn't gotten to it yet but now realize that there were two before it which though they are different characters highly enriched this story. The author did a wonderful job of developing the characters in all three books. In this book the story moved right along and my feelings for Enoch especially developed right along with the storyline. This is a must read for anyone who loves biblical fiction. I love the storyline as it is a subject that is different. Many authors stick to the more popular biblical characters but Carol Towriss choses characters from the bible that are more hidden in the pages and develops them into larger than life stories. Awesome reading.

I purchased this book for my Kindle because I enjoy historical fiction and Biblical fiction - if it is true to facts in the Bible. This book was well written and the 2 primary characters seem true to Bible facts. The description of daily life routine activities was interesting and seemed accurate. I really enjoyed this fictional romance.

I thought the story was great. But I was very distracted by the number of grammar mistakes. It seemed like there was one on almost every page. Not only was it hard to read because of that, but it made parts of the story hard to understand (for example, not knowing which character was speaking). If someone would have proofread the book before printing it, I would have given it 5 stars.

Again i love it love it,love it. You have an amazing talent in making these old testament stories come alive. Each character, plot, is alive on every page. Its indeed a challenge to learn to listen for the voice of God differently

I enjoyed reading this book as much as the previous books. The characters were reminded again and again of YAHweh' promise to always be with them and that he would protect them if they were obedient. This series made the Old Testament Characters come alive

26 years ago, I graduated with a degree in exercise science, got certified by the ACSM and NSCA, and then dove into personal training in both small rural 'mom and pop gyms' and later in large metro area health clubs. But four years of college, the top certifications and even 6 years of bodybuilding (including winning 2 state titles by age 21) did not arm me with everything I needed to know to be successful, and for years, I struggled, literally, just to pay the rent and put food on the table. To be successful in the personal training business requires more than a formal exercise education or personal experience working out, it takes a deep understanding of psychology and human behavior as well extensive knowledge of business, sales and marketing, and learning it all is not easy when you don't have a mentor. When I started, there was virtually no guidance available in these missing areas of trainer education.Today there are teachers who have been there, done it, figured it all out and are sharing their knowledge; people like Jonathan Goodman, a man who is known as the trainer of trainers. Jonathan's newly updated "Ignite the Fire", is a superb guidebook to the entire range of skills you must master to lead the field today. Some of the information in the book may not be new to long-time experienced trainers, yet every trainer at every level is sure to pick up some valuable nuggets - some little tricks or insights they never thought of before that could make even the already established trainer even more successful. For new trainers, especially those who are struggling to get business or carve out their unique niche where they fit best in the industry, this book will be indispensable and is worthy not just of reading, but of studying. The information could help you land your first client, make more money, get promoted or even score your dream job. Some of the topics Jonathan covered that I thought were especially valuable included:* Compliance: How to get your clients to stick with it by using the right motivation, inspiration and communication.* Techniques to help your clients develop self-efficacy (and the psychology behind it)* How to develop relationships and build loyalty with clients and with all the people in your business network* Finding your right fit in the industry by reviewing the pros and cons of different types of training work including big box gyms, studios, in home training, garage gyms, community centers, medical facilities and online training* New opportunities in online training and how to use the the web (blogs, social media, etc) to increase your visibility and business.* How to adjust your approach to goal setting for clients based on their training experience and personality (using the old "SMART goals" approach may not work for everyone).* Understanding intrinsic and extrinsic motivation* How to set yourself apart from the competition, differentiate yourself, and why this is so important today.* Why you should start broad and then become a specialist, whether that's low back pain prevention & rehab, getting great glutes, working with older clients, pre and post natal training and so on.* How to sell personal training, even if you don't like sales and don't consider yourself a sales person (including a practical 5 step selling formula)* A close look at the 10 types of clients and how to understand them and work with them effectively* How to develop the social skills of the worlds best trainers, such as approaching clients on the floor, making small talk, getting rapport, helping quiet clients relax and open up and developing great questioning skills* Also the "side bars" ("Keys to success in the fitness industry") featuring all the guest segments with some of the top trainers in the business were all very helpful because they gave real world, practical tips and advice. In summing up, though this book covers all bases (as much as one book can do that), I think the strongest part is the attention it gives to understanding psychology and human behavior. When you understand the reality of the typical client's lifestyle and deeper motivations, and work with each individual, knowing where they're coming from, you'll develop a bond with your clients that a trainer who doesn't understand this will never achieve... one that will give you the edge. And as the title implies, Ignite the Fire explains how to take your passion for fitness and pass it on to your clients, building an emotional connection with exercise for your clients, getting them excited to work out and keep doing it for life.Although I ultimately ended up with a lot of success in the fitness industry, I wish I had this book when i started out in personal training. I'm sure it could have helped save me from years of frustration.Disclosure: I received a copy of the book directly from Jonathan. I had not read the previous edition so I can't make a comparison, though I have read his book on social media (also a great read), follow him on Facebook and visit the personal training development center (PTDC) regularly. On that note, I also recommend that trainers follow the PTDC for continuing education and for the list of must-read material Jonathan and his team compile/curate every week, which saves all of us a whole lot of time in staying up to date.

I've been a personal trainer for 12 years. I've gotten certifications through ACE, NCSF as a personal trainer, NCSF as a strength coach, Robert Dos Remedios' CPDS (certified program design specialist), as well as read quite a few books on fat loss, program design, and even many in the personal development world. Jonathan Goodman's book Ignite the Fire brings everything together better than anything I've come across. He really ties it all in. I'm currently studying for his online personal trainer certification. His materials have made it more clear to me what ACTION to take immediately than anything I've ever read or studied. Huge recommendation on this book.

I was at a crossroads in my life after college, not knowing what to do. My wife told me to figure out what I would do if I won a billion dollars and never had to work another day in my life, and then figure out how to get paid to do that. Because of Jonathan Goodman's books, the Online Trainer Academy, and Personal Trainer Development Center I'm able to consider myself retired because I "work" by helping busy adult runners train injury free with personalized run scheduling, strength work, and adequate recovery. My wife is a teacher and since I do all of this online we are able to travel during the summers. We've lived in Panama and Seattle and road tripped camping along the ways as well. I would not have the knowhow and confidence to turn my running expertise into a business without Jon Goodman, and it all started with his books.

J Goodman's writing is refreshing - I'm an owner of many of his publications. It's relatable, clear, and concise. This was the first book I ever read by him, which had me buying more one after the others. If YOU'RE NEW into your fitness career, this is a MUST have. If YOU'RE THINKING about fitness as your career, this is a MUST have. If you've been in the field for some time now, I would still recommend buying a copy - I reference this book often just to refresh myself on the basics - especially when I'm having overwhelming days and can't quite think straight on how to approach or solve an issue. Like I said, Goodman's writing is concise and clear. It's a great book to always fall back on.

I am currently preparing to begin my career in personal training. This is the first industry related book I picked up to read while trying to identify and organize all the questions and thoughts swirling around in my head as to the specific choices and paths I may take. I could not have picked a better book to read. Not only did I get answers to most all my immediate questions, but this book got me even MORE excited for this next chapter in my life. The "words of wisdom" throughout and quotes from successful individuals in this field were thought provoking. I enjoyed the examples provided in the text as to "what to do if this happens.." and how to recognize and identify different "types" of clients. Jonathan does a wonderful job explaining why he does what he does and the pros and cons of certain choices we are faced with in this field. This book will no doubt be a reference guide for me as I continue on my journey. AMAZING!!

About 2 and a half years ago I was a cop contemplating trying to become a personal trainer again. I had failed years before as I didn't have the confidence and hadn't yet achieved my own fitness goals. After mastering my own programming and seeing results, I wanted to help others. I read Ignite the Fire.As I type this years later I'm sitting in my own personal training studio. I have over 50 clients I work with in a small group setting. Jon Goodman has guided me on how to build a client army. The programming I use I learned over the years from great coaches, but the psychology of people who need our help? That was where I was and am still sometimes stuck. Enter Jon. He understands the psychology behind helping people change. If you think any of his products might help you, buy them yesterday. He's that good.

So dense.I purchased this book for an "Ethics in the Information Age" class. I consider myself pretty technologically adept, but I had a very difficult time getting through each chapter of this book. Each page has so much information that needs to be retained, it's almost painful. I appreciated the case studies at the end of the chapters that helped put some of the information into context, but I would have appreciated more of this in the chapters themselves. It was too flatly written for my taste, and I didn't find it interesting to read. Required reading, though, so I made it through. A lot of wonderful information is found here, but accessing and retaining it when you are flooded with billions of bytes of facts is the true test.

The rating is to inform you that I got the book although a few days than expected! Upon a glance, I can say that it would prove helpful for the study that I am conducting on Human Rights, Cyber Social Media and the Security Issue in the Mena Region. I will certainly write a lengthy review upon finishing to read it.

This was a great price on a great book but I returned it because I bought the wrong book for my sons class.

great, what can I say, it was required reading material for class.

I used this book for my ethics class, it was interesting.

Required reading for a grad school class. Some good content. Will go back and review the book at a later time to learn more.

Books yum, Wish it was cheaper but they gotta get money!

Very well written. Excellent textbook
