Filled with great information about how horses should be trimmed and fed. Loved the book tons of information but not fun having the Laminitis Issues.

As a professional natural hoof care practitioner this book is a must read for horse owners. This book belongs in everyone's library. Everything you need and want to know about laminitis is in here. Along with the DVD offered by the author this can be cured. It's not a death sentence

Very good. Eye opening. Bought his book on Founder and Pasture Paradise also. Recommended by my vet. Lots less work! Happier exercised horse. Less pesticides and fertilized crop chemicals going in my horse. Humane. Expense in fencing is the biggest downside I see. Written by a farrier who knows hooves.

The book was good general information but most was, to me, already available on line. Put off by the high fees for "consultation" for individual follow-up.

I would recommend this and all Hank the Cowdog CD's and Books! They are wonderful! My daughter loved them in the 80"s and now her children enjoy them. Thank you John Erickson!

This review is for the audio edition. Hank doesn't exactly cover himself with glory in The Case of the Haystack Kitties. He's his usual hasty, conceited self for most of the book, starting with one of his amazing leaps to a completely false conclusion when talking with Drover. In case you think cottonwood trees aren't real, they are. We have them in my part of Arizona, too. Those seeds do look like cotton.Slim Chance, the Lopers' slovenly, lazy hired hand, has been ordered to take some feed to the cattle. Slim takes Hank along, which leads to a lesson for Slim and danger for Hank (not to mention a cameo appearance by my favorite buzzards, Wallace and Junior). Part of the aftermath of that danger made me wince with disgust.The haystack kitties are a skinny stray cat, Gertie, and her six kittens. The kittens are old enough to have their eyes open, but not old enough to hunt. Hank is very hard-hearted toward the plight of the 'squatters' as he calls them. He wants them off his ranch, a sentiment heartily endorsed by Pete the Barncat. Gertie is a timid, polite cat, but don't even THINK of hurting her kittens.Crash, a bull, has been knocking down the fence to get at the feed. Slim sets Hank to guard the pen from Crash. Gertie is worried about her kittens if that bull gets in again.Hank does get to redeem himself at the end, of course. As for the songs, I don't agree that Slim's was boring, as Hank claimed, but Slim did get in a few snarks about a dog. Hank's song about kitties may have accurately reflected his feelings about cats, but he shouldn't have sung it to Gertie's kittens.Hank the Cowdog is great fun, but this time he definitely takes a backseat to Gertie.Note: I think the name Slim drops and Hank mangles is "Barney Oldfield," an American racer who, according to Wikipedia, was the first man to drive 60 miles an hour (96.560 64 kilometers). Luckily for me, my late dad knew who he was back in pre-Internet days so I didn't have to wait until I could get to the library to look him up. (I was reading a Doc Savage reprint and Doc had instructed his driver to do a Barney Oldfield.)

As the title would suggest, in this story Hank, Head of Ranch Security, gets involved with a mommy cat and her litter of kittens he has found invading "his" ranch. Well you know how Hank feels about cats...goodness knows he has told us enough times and his feeling are no different in this case.Ah, but there is a very mean bull involved which is tearing down fences and destroying they hay bales and hank is tied to the fence by Slim so that Hank can guard both hay and fence. Tied up with a bunch of kittens...good grief! Of course we all know down deep what a softy Hank is and in this one he most certainly shows his true colors.We are not only treated to the convoluted conversations between Hank and Drover in this one, but we have a very strange cat thrown into the mix and it is hilarious.Like all the Hank books, this one is a great family read and is a great book to give to the reluctant reader.This was a library find.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

Excellent book with excellent reviews all around. Best Counterpoints book I've read thus far. Much better panel of people to present the views and well presented, defended, and contended. Often Counterpoints books get too wordy and hard to follow for even an above average layman or woman, or they try to be too ecumenically gracious. I found this specific Counterpoints book to be very readable, easy to understand, and a perfect book on the subject. I suppose it may have been better to add a view where Baptism has no place (Salvation Army or Quakers), or a view that is Roman Catholic-esque to be completely fair. However, I am actually glad they didn't. I was looking for traditional Protestant interpretations and was glad to find this book. Perfect read! Well done! I was surprised to learn about the Church of Christ and Lutheran views, Disclaimer: I formerly held to Nettle's view, and believe he has really done wonders with his presentation in this book, I had my reservations though, and now I fall mostly in Pratt's view now, but also with reservations - this book hasn't changed my mind on anything personally, but it is very helpful to understand what other believer's believe about Baptism. Highly recommended!

This is a fine introduction to the competing views of baptism inside Protestanism, though there are indeed further nuanced positions of baptism within the Protestant camp besides the four represented here . See for instance, Kenneth Stephenson's "The Mystery of Baptism in the Anglican Tradition" that describes seven nuanced approaches to baptism inside the Anglican tradition alone.The rebuttals and counterarguments made by the other three theologians were more interesting than the actual presentations themselves unless you are completely new to the baptism debate. However the relatively simple introductions to the respective approaches to baptism might clue you in on how the other side actually thinks. It is highly unlikely that anyone will come away with a changed mind given the nature of the presentations. The Reformed and Lutheran positions, for instance, approach the subject of baptism by relying heavily on the Reformed confessions and the theology of Luther respectively. Those who do not share such presuppositions are unlikely to come away convinced.Nettles's presentation of baptism is fine and does not begin with a confessional basis or a great theologian such as Luther, but the Bible, arguing that baptism is a symbol of Christ's saving work whereby a person who has already come to faith now visibly enters the Christian community. Nettles then details the baptism of John and Jesus and then describes several key instances of conversion and baptism in the Book of Acts arguing that faith in Christ/conversion always precedes baptism. One of the strengths of the Baptist approach is the lack of biblical evidence for children being baptized in the New Testament. That there is no mention of an infant being baptized anywhere in the New Testament and no command to do so should give Paedobaptists pause, yet the question of original sin and its effects on infants is not addressed sufficiently, nor is the theory of the age of accountability discussed. Pratt, offering the Reformed response, points out that Nettles drives a wedge between one's salvation and one's baptism whereas the New Testament, especially St. Paul, seems to speak of them as a unity.Robert Kolb, presenting the Lutheran view, placed great emphasis on the creative Word of God as the basis for baptismal regeneration. Kolb quotes a passage from Luther that states, "Baptism is an eternal covenant which does not lapse ... When Christians fall, they always remain in their baptisms, and God binds himself to them so that He will help them when the baptized call upon Him." This quote is misunderstood by Kolb's detractors giving them the impression that once baptized a person remains in a permananent state of grace. Luther's intent, as Kolb points out, was for baptism to be a daily event of dying to self and rising up to a new life in Christ. Interestingly Kolb does not emphasize the urgency of infant baptism given the gravity of original sin. In this respect the Lutheran position is deeply indebted to Augustine of Hippo. Moreover the strength of the Lutheran position is that it ties baptism to the promises of the Word of God and thereby grants the believer the assurance that God is faithful regardless of one's feelings and inadequacies. In this regard Lutheranism is a fundamentally objective religion that places great emphasis on the sacraments since Luther himself suffered so greatly from the uncertainty of his own salvation.The Reformed position presented by Richard Pratt is helpful. Like the Lutheran position the Reformed is also indebted to Augustine of Hippo as Pratt quotes the Westminster Confession of Faith emphasizing that baptism for the Reformed is both covenantal and sacramental. What does sacramental mean?"There is, in every sacrament, a spiritual relation, or sacramental union, between the sign and the thing signified: whence it comes to pass, that the names and effects of the one are attributed to the other."What does all of that mean? The "sign" is the water and the "thing signified" is the actual regeneration/renewal of the individual by the Holy Spirit. In Reformed theology, however, regeneration does not necessarily take place at the moment of baptism. The Spirit is free to move and renew the individual at His sovereign discretion, often years after the moment of the actual baptism. The Spirit is not bound to the water as it is for Lutherans, for the Reformed emphasize the sovereignty of God and the divine prerogative to operate apart from the two Gospel sacraments and even the preaching and hearing of the Word. The strength of this position is that it eliminates any mechanical or magical certainty that the Lutheran or Roman Catholic view might grant baptism. The weakness, from a Lutheran perspective, is that the recipient remains uncertain if baptism and the Lord's Supper actually accomplish anything at all. In this sense the Reformed position, though indebted to Augustine, has not been faithful to him, for Augustine held that infants were indeed made regenerate in baptism by virtue of the "sign" (the water) and the "thing signified" (the renewing of the Holy Spirit)coming together at the moment of baptism. The Reformed position, while embracing Augustine's distinction of "sign" and the "thing signified" inadvertently drives a wedge between the two by making predestination and the sovereignty of God, rather than the promises of God, the central operating principle of its theology.John Castelein, presenting the Churches of Christ position, argues baptism is the biblical occasion of salvation. Castelein is a believers' baptist who opposes infant baptism while protesting that his church's position has been wrongly described as baptismal regeneration. Castelein makes a threefold distinction whereby divine grace is the ground for salvation; human faith is the agency of salvation; baptism is the occasion of salvation. Nettles, offering the Baptist response, points out that as Castelein seeks to harmonize the theologies of James and Paul negates the Protestant doctrine of salvation by faith alone (see page 132) thus preferring James to Paul where there should be no question of disunity to begin with. Castelein's position becomes something of a "tertia quid" since it is neither truly Protestant, as are the other three positions, nor Catholic.Overall a fine resource to have in one book. It will not change your mind, but it will provide you with a more informed perspective of much contested issue.

If you want to learn the various views on Baptism in the Protestant/Evangelical world, then this book is for you! Each view was presented in a single chapter by an author who supported that particular side. This chapter was followed by a series of three short counter-chapters by the other authors. After reading these attempted refutations one would read a chapter on the next view.I found most of the views written with clarity. The authors knew how to present their positions well. The Lutheran View seemed to have the weakest presentation. I fault the author defending that position more than the position itself as other positions picked up on elements of that position and presented them better when making their own cases. The author's refutations of others positions also lost focus at times and drifted into refuting a previous presentation or presenting their own positions some more. I was disappointed the Roman Catholic/Orthodox View was not included in this discussion. But with that being said, I know the Lutheran View shares many similarities with it.Overall, this book was well-written and gave a stellar presentation for each side (Lutheran excepted). The refutations proved to be excellent half of the time, but drifted in focus at other times. Nevertheless, one read enough to see the weaknesses in all of the positions. A good book to dive deeper on this topic!

The author does a very admirable job of laying out the four views and the arguments for and against the different ideas and modes of baptism. As one who holds to one main view of baptism, the author brings each mode to the forefront and gives good space and logic and SCRIPTURE to understand each point.

Being part of the Restoration tradition, I found this book to be helpful in better understanding the positions and reasoning of the differing views on baptism. While my own views on baptism have not really changed after reading, I was glad to read a discussion on this subject that was both friendly in tone, and still honest about the areas of disagreement.There were a few places where I felt contributors were splitting semantic hairs. In some places, I found myself wondering what exactly two of the contributors disagreed on. (The Lutheran rebuttal to the Reformed essay is probably the biggest example of this). Overall though, this was an excellent read, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fair and balanced presentation of the subject.

Read this many years ago and am planning to re-read it. The part about the tension between the material and the artist never made much sense and Sarris never applied it during his movie reviewing career. We all read it because it was a touchstone on what to watch and a tool for organizing your thinking about films and what separates a good director from a great one. You can pretty much find the bad ones on your own. The fight between Sarris and Pauline Karl enriched film criticism. They were equally matched great critics. There willnever be another pair like them or as illuminating as they were. David Debby and Anthony Lane apparently no longer work at the New Yorker and the magazine isn't saying why. I called the magazine to inquire and never received a return call. I'm discovering RogerEbert's writing after years of thinking he was a jerk on television.Anybody worth reading that I'm overlooking?

If you don't know this book, buy it immediately. It takes American film criticism up to about 1970 and coincides with the time Sarris was involved with the (real) Village Voice, Jonas Mekas, American Cahiers,and the founding of the NY Film Festival and the national society of film critics. It took me about five years of reading his reviews until I finally got it - Sarris had understood that the most profound thoughts and themes were played out with style and panache by genre filmmakers with personal obsessions and ideas that did not require Western Union to spell it out.There's some things to quibble about (I never could see why he thought so highly of Blake Edwards, but I keep trying because I trust his insight. Even Sarris can change his mind as he did on Billy Wilder a few years back).If you are a film buff and have not discovered his work (also recommended:Confessions of a Cultist; The John Ford Mystery Book; You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet are among the best) start here. That goes double if you experience guilty pleasure and see things no one else does in people like Anthony Mann, Michael Powell, Sam Fuller, Max Ophuls, Budd Boetticher or James Whale. I have often given this book as a gift to film loving friends. It opens a world of discovery and rapport when a friends "gets it" and suddenly, you both have a shared sensibility and frame of reference.Also, check out his website for yearly top ten lists and also the work of his wife Molly Haskell (especially good on Howard Hawks).

I am not a contrarian by nature but there are several points that require clarification among the many reviews of Sarris’ seminal “The American Cinema.” In an historical context, the book is of interest because he is an early proponent of the director as auteur theory. I would compare it to an early English dictionary in that word origins are delineated and classifications and definitions are from years ago. Meanings have remained the same for many but others have changed and new words have been added. Sarris was wise in his introduction to state that this work was not the last word on the subject but more of springboard for further discussion.Surely no one would argue that Mr. Sarris is very erudite and an excellent writer very similar, in fact, to David Thompson. These characteristics may sway many even though his opinions may be erroneous. Although true that various directors’ works are reevaluated, it is hard to conceive that Billy Wilder was not recognized as an important director. I know that he later admitted this transgression and corrected himself. Still other now esteemed directors such as Sidney Lumet, John Huston, Elia Kazan, and Stanley Kubrick are not given their true value. He stated that Robert Mulligan never directed an entirely satisfactory film yet he helmed one of the great films of the sixties “To Kill a Mockingbird. “. In Sarris’ defense some of the artists’ better films were yet to be made. I was impressed that he recognized Francis Coppola’s talent before “The Godfather.”In summary, “The American Cinema” is interesting to read in its historical context. It is not a reliable reference book due to its antiquated inaccuracies and the cursory treatment of many of the subjects covered. Mr. Sarris’ scholarly approach is impressive but does not convince with his incorrect assessments of several directors of major talent.

This book is a classic and was a Christmas present for a relative who is a film freak. It covers American film directors and their films/film careers through 1968. Welles, Von Sternburg, John Houston, etc. Most of the directors worked in black and white first. For those who are not aware of the old masters (and a few losers) this is a fine book for film study.

A classic and excellent book, a definitive piece of cinematic criticism and an invaluable tool for watching the best films. I wish his students would update it.

Sarris's book started a salvo the equivalent of the battle of Tushima Straits between those who bought the French idea of the director as "author" or auteur, and those who did not. Filmmakers bought the auteur theory whole hog, and why not, since it put directors into the same rank as poets, painters, composers and novelists. Sarris approached his analysis by ranking directors by his view of their worth. His ideas on certain directors will madden some, particularly in his "Less Than Meets the Eye," category, but overall, Sarris presents us with a well-thought-out view of American film, arguably the most important cultural force since the printing of the Bible in vernacular languages. Some drawbacks, for which Sarris is not at fault: the work is dated, stopping in 1968, right before the massive burst of new directors who would change American film for a brief time, until blockbusters stifled them. If you are interested in Cinema, in film studies, in writing film criticism, this book is worth your while.

I used this book after using some of MGMAT's books. The GMAT Math Prep Course text is excellent, with many, many examples and reasonably good explanations. HOWEVER, you have to have a SOLID FOUNDATION to be able to use this book because it focuses (mostly) on 600-800 level problems without explaining all the finer math principle details (author assumes that you know them, and you will, if you use the MGMAT guide Manhattan GMAT Set of 8 Strategy Guides, Fourth Edition (Manhattan GMAT Strategy Guides)).WARNING: the Kindle version contains many errors! The errors are OK and you figure them out after reading the problem explanations, but these errors CAN and WILL get frustrating at times. The number of errors greatly decreases towards the middle of the book. I contacted Amazon support about this issue and the support personnel told me that the errors are a publisher issue and that the issue will be escalated. Haven't really heard anything since.With the above said, I would still highly recommend the book and even the Kindle version (that's what I used). The Kindle version is an absolute joy to use when studying from iPad.

The best way to improve problem solving skills is to do problems, and this book has a ton of good ones. I recommend this book to anybody who is comfortable with the GMAT math syllabus but wants a ton of good practice.

I'm only in the first chapter and in the first ten questions alone there have been two errors that render the question invalid. The answer explanations have the typos fixed so you can see what the questions were supposed to ask, but it is still super frustrating.

This book is great if your math is rusty and you need a more in depth refresher. It only covers more basic GMAT math so don't expect to master the most difficult math problems after using this book.The book's main shortcoming was the lack of tricks and shortcuts. There simply isn't time to fully solve every problem fully on the GMAT and sometimes I knew of easier methods to find the answer quickly with skills I learned with the Kaplan book.

Who edits this stuff? Obviously no one because the misprints in this book are horrible. It's difficult enough to go through the different equations and understand the explanations while having to pick out all the misprints in each equation. For example, on page 248, there are at least 13 instances where either an equation symbol (=) or a "greater than or equal to" symbol is used instead of where a subtraction symbol (-) should be used. This is pathetic, Nova. I have the copyright edition 2010. I'm surprised there aren't more complaints about this in the review section.As for the general content of the study guide, it is marginal. I would give it 3 stars, but explanations for how to solve certain problems are not very detailed and could be stronger. Buy at your own risk... I bought mine used at least.

First off, this is a great little book that I'd absolutely recommend to anybody that is looking to brush up on the quant part of the test. It goes into all the topics in great detail, includes simple and easily remembered tips for eliminating answer choices on the harder questions, and gives you small equations which (while unnecessary) can really help you come test day. The reason I give the Kindle version four stars instead of five is it has a few problems. The big thing is typos. I don't know how these came about, probably from the use of scanning in lieu of actually taking the time to enter in the data and tables, but the book has a lot of typos in the question sections, some of which make the question ask something completely different than what it's actually asking. I've seen 1=l, A=4, 6=b, (=C, and others. Usually you can tell what they meant, but in a few circumstances, particularly 6=b, it can really throw you off.The only other things I could complain about:1: Some of the difficulty levels seem to be off, with some medium questions being hard and hard questions being painfully easy. I remember one 'very hard' question (Counting section, around 60% of the way through) where if understood weighted averages the only possible way I saw to screw it up would be to accidentally subtract .05 from .55 instead of .5 from .55.2: The books favors long solution explanations. In a lot of ways, this is an extremely good thing because it's almost impossible to get lost in their explanation. Unfortunately, on the actual test you have time limits so you can't afford to do the extremely drawn out solutions the book favors. I wish they would have occasionally taken the time to show how you would do the problem quickly. A good example of this is 6 & 7 in Sequences.6) If you can't figure out the relationship and just realize that the middle value between 1 and 3 is 2 and guess the answer that way, there's a drawn out explanation that's very useful.7) A normal person would say "a=2ar, so r must equal .5. .5^2 is thus .25." Add 'em up and divide (if you see the problem you'll know). It takes under 30 seconds to do this problem. Instead, they do this gigantic, vastly overcomplicated solution when a normal person would just say "1.5a/.75a = 1.5/.75 = 2/1."Again, it's a great book and I completely recommend it. It's the best book I've seen for GMAT math thus far, and I've read quite a bit prepping for that test. I just wish the publisher would fix the typos, fix the difficulty levels, and give guidelines for doing the extremely common problems ("Machine A takes 5 hours to do something, Machine B takes 3 hours to do the same thing, how long would they take together?" sort of stuff) quickly.Bottom line: Buy it, it's good.

Great book. The first time I attempted the Gmat i studied on the cracking the gmat and placed in 45th percentile in math. I bought this book and the advance math prep book and after a month from my 580 i got 700 with 80% in quantitative. The problems are slighly different from the ones on the test but the difficulty is similar. It covers more aspects than the cracking the gmat book.
