About the Author

Deepa Thomas is a graduate of Delhi University with degrees in journalism and political science. She moved to the US and, in 1985, founded Deepa Textiles. After 21 years and 23 design awards, the company has been credited with transforming the $10 billion a year contract furniture industry. Since 2010, Deepa has combined her passion for journalism with her newfound passion for cooking, deconstructing the principles of the most successful diets and healthy living practices in order to reconstruct a simple, slow carb "New Indian" cuisine. Deepa has served as a trustee of Rhode Island School of Design and a Commissioner of the Asian Art Museum. She is currently a trustee of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. She won the James Beard Award in 2018 for her cookbook / memoir, Deepa’s Secrets. Deepa Thomas lives with her husband, not far from her two sons, in the Nob Hill section of San Francisco. Curt Ellis, author of the foreword, is an American filmmaker, social entrepreneur, and advocate for sustainable agriculture. He is the CEO of the nonprofit organization FoodCorps.

This book is perfect for foodies and soul searchers alike as it nourishes both your taste buds and one's heart! The recipes are absolutely scrumptious and are beautifully outlined and photographed. It's totally unique as a cookbook for not only was I extremely excited to cook everything but was engrossed and inspired by the heartwarming story Deepa writes.For a recent dinner party I made the Smashed Chickpea and Toasted Peanut cakes accompanied by the Chutput Ketchup along with the Fennel, Radicchio, Fresh Berry Salad and the New Indian Cacciatore. My guests thought I was a genius! Sadly not, it was all Deepa's Secrets.

This is a beautiful book and could easily find a home on your coffee table except that you'll be using it in the kitchen to cook up some really terrific meals. It helps if you have an Indian grocery store near by as there are lots of spices and other goodies that you might not have at the Piggly Wiggly. Buy the freshest ingredients possible, many are available at Amazon if you don't have direct local access. Tastiest and most interesting slow carb, diabetic friendly book I have seen.

Tried the clay pot fish mollie. It was simple and came out fantastic. You do have to do a little prep with the "secret spice". But other than that it did not take that long. Take a little time and make some and keep it around. You will make delicious healthy food quickly.Also try the sprouted moon dal....

I've been engaged in Indian cooking for a little while, and really enjoy it. I'm one who likes to learn and understand techniques, ingredients, spice paring and why certain ingredients get along, and then use recipes as guide lines to create my own, only because always following recipes is to stressful to me. This book put all that together for me and now I can " "free lance" Indian cooking with good results. I have followed many recipes in the book and they all turned out great, and maybe someday some of mine will be as good as Deepas.

This book is just beautiful! The recipes are delicious and so easy to follow. It's like having a cooking lesson in your own kitchen. The photographs are stunning and the stories are so heartfelt. I just ordered several extra copies to give as hostess gifts.

This book is the closest thing to sitting in someone's kitchen and being fed in body and soul. I am loving the weekday cooking options. Tried them on my pickiest critic and he loved it too.

A southern author telling a southern story. A little sad because I'm finished with the book, but it's that good of a read. Once I started, I couldn't stop.I was hooked from the epigraph. This is my favorite Donna Everhart book yet. It's longer than the first two. The characters are fully developed and there is a true family focus rather than one or two individuals.Donna gives all the right details to place the reader where the story occurs. Weather, plants, scents, descriptions of food, furniture, linens, customs - I knew exactly where I was for the entire book.Sonny Creech will be a favorite of mine for a long time.

Donna Everhart has done it again! This book tells the story of Sonny Creech and her family in North Carolina in the 1950s. We are along for the ride as they encounter bigotry and hatred in that time period and watch as Sonny's life collapses after the death of her father. This author crafts characters that are multi-faceted and she applies her understanding of human nature to all, even the antagonists, so they are human beings instead of tired stereotypes. The only thing I didn't like about this book was it ended. Can't wait to read her next book.

I just received this book and once I started reading it I honestly couldn't stop. My heart ached for those kids, and anger filled my heart when it came to their mother. Although I understood her reasoning for doing what she did I was still overwhelmed with anger.This book was so worth waiting for. The sad part is it's only her 3rd book and i've already read the other two and throughly enjoyed them also. Now I have to wait for her to write another one, and waiting for her books is so hard. She's at the top of mt favorite authors list!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was difficult to read at times but you had to keep pressing and knowing there would be a light and a twist at the end of the tunnel. I appreciated Sonny’s strength for a young girl. Also her innocence at some of the going’s on as the story unfolds. All I can say is read it and feel the characters. Like Sonny and Daniel said, “That Mr Fowler is a sumbitch.”

I loved loved this book. It was so good and very well written. It takes place in the fifties in North Carolina. It had me from page one. I started it at ten o clock, read until one, went to sleep and got up early so I could finish it.

I found the book more like an adventure in human complexity. The author created a despicable male character, Frank Fowler. He created hell for the family and was eventually dispatched by a poison Pie. Fun read.

Sad. Tragic. Children thrown into a very sad adult world.

It is a story of prejudice, bigotry, hatred and bias that existed in the 1950’s. It is a story of good people who farm the land, cotton and soil. It also is a story of survival, family, love and hope. The author describes her colorful cast of characters as complex, complicated, ignorant, good and evil, and dysfunctional.Twelve year old Martha “Sonny” Creech loves working with the soil, and has inherited the skill of finding water from her deceased father. The other children make fun “Sonny” and call her a “water witch”. Sonny finds comfort with her friend Daniel, who has his own quirky personality and problems. Mrs. Creech and her two sons and Sonny are left in a financial dilemma when her husband dies. Mrs. Creech is forced to accept an offer of help from Frank Fowler a neighbor that has motives of his own. In order to survive, the Creech family has to grow cotton, pick it and sell it. This book was required for the vet tech program I was in. It had a number of helpful pictures and diagrams. I would definitely recommend using more than one book for A&P, but this was is a good one to have on hand.

This is exactly the textbook required for the class my daughter is taking. Her school under ordered the books needed.

I bought this book in hopes of supplementing the poorly illustrated manual we are already using. The photographs of the dissections in this manual are small and poor in quality as well. The pictures are too dark and small to decipher anything. To try to use this maual to teach is not possible. There is no way a student could use these pictures for reference to either learn from or to study from. If you are looking for a lab manual where you want students to actually be able to SEE what they should be looking at, this is NOT it.

Color pictures could be brighter. They are hard to see without enlarging and going as bright as you can on your screen, in order to see the details.

About the Author

Doug Woodham brings a unique perspective to the art market from his lifelong interest in art, business, and collecting. A trained economist with a PhD from the University of Michigan, Woodham served as president of the Americas for Christie's, the international auction house. He is currently on the board of the arts venture Twyla. Earlier in his career, he was a partner with McKinsey and Company, working primarily with asset and wealth management clients. He continues his advocacy for collectors by advising private clients on legacy planning associated with their art collection, including helping them to asses alternative disposition strategies. Woodham and his wife, who are based in New York City, are avid collectors with a focus on drawings by artists associated with minimalism, conceptualism, and land art.

Doug Woodham provides an incredibly helpful roadmap of the network of museums, galleries and auction houses which make up the art world and how they have changed the way people buy, sell and experience art over the past couple decades. The writing style is engaging and the book is a fun read - which is not to say that it is light on substance - Doug introduces some complicated issues, like how cultural property laws affect the art market in different countries; I have picked the book up several times since finishing it to refer to a specific topic. The many examples of artists, buyers and sellers are very informative as are tips for novice collectors to purchase art wisely. I would strongly recommend the book to anyone looking for an introduction to the art world, or people who are interested in collecting art and are looking for some advice on how to start an art collection or to learn more about collecting strategies and habits.

Really liked it! Woodham's writing is clear and interesting, drawing in the "lay person" without making it banal for the art expert or the art professional. I liked especially Woodham's lively, real-life examples to illustrate how the art market works and how it has evolved over time. The book identifies the key players; explains why the art market is still much narrower than some other markets/asset classes, like stocks or bonds or Real Estate; points to where inefficiencies may lie; and suggests what potential investors and collectors have to be most careful about. Especially how to avoid some of the heavy "fluff" that hits every art "newcomer" head-on. Woodham's book hints at how this market would (should?) evolve if more "analytical" approaches found their way more into it. It is an excellent introduction for new collectors and casual observers, and an even better reminder for those who took the plunge a while ago but now should come up for air before diving into it again. And all that, without taking away the fun of loving art! Good read!"

After visiting the Dallas Art Fair and catching Doug Woodham on a panel discussion, I immediately purchased his book and found it to be very insightful for the new artist and collector like myself. His chapters on “Best Time to be an Artist”, and “Putting a Price on an Artwork” are well worth the price of this book alone! For an artist like me, it is a wonderful reminder that potential art buyers from all over the world are wanting to purchase art work. For buyers or sellers of art from family estates, galleries, or auction houses, this book is invaluable!

Doug Woodham offers a demystifying and insightful look at the modern and contemporary art market in general – the artists, collectors, advisors, galleries, and auction houses that comprise it, the forces driving it, and how it got the way it is – all illustrated with surprising and entertaining stories. A very engaging and enjoyable read.

A straightforward and honest take on the structures of the art world, how it works, and the problems lurking behind it. Being realistic, it has useful advice for the people looking to collect or even work in this sector.

The book is written in a clear and fluent how-to-succeed-in-ten-steps style. It lists many recommendations for potential art collectors. Most of the recommendations are quite obvious, but some are informative. I mainly enjoyed reading the advice in regard to the taxes to be paid when selling an item and how to avoid the estate tax. Unfortunately the book doesn't address artistic questions such as, what criteria are relevant for judging the "real" value of a picture.

This book has some problems. The first problem is the title; it makes it sound like this is an extension of the first book. It's not. This is a book that provides tips about how to survive in various types of wilderness, natural disasters, or man made disasters (including active shooter situations), along with overly repetitive info on how to make a Go Bag.Second problem is that some off the information in here is simply wrong. I'm hoping that's the result of a bad editor/ghostwriter rather than the author being this wrong.Examples: Pg. 50, cold weather survival; yes, alcohol does cause vasodilation which leads to increased heat loss. But caffeine and tobacco cause vaso-constriction, which can contribute to frostbite. Yes, both are bad in cold weather, but stating wrong info dilutes ones trust in the res of the info provided.Pg. 94, desalinating sea water; minor but important point is missing - remove the tin can before trying to drink the water.Pg. 116, choice of shotgun ammo; this is a major problem and so wrong it could cost lives. Contrary to what's written, buckshot WILL penetrate multiple interior walls. Worse, again contrary to what's written, the pattern size from a shotgun is roughly 1" per yard of distance from the target. So at 3-6 yards that you'd see inside a home, that's a maximum of a 2" pattern, which means you DO have to aim. Did Joe Biden write this section?Elsewhere there are a couple references to saying NOT to use Goretex because it's not breathable. Well, Goretex is breathable. So the question is, did the author mean don't use Goretex BECAUSE it's breathable (and thus, unlike vapor barrier clothing, will make you colder), or did he mean you SHOULD use Goretex because it's breathable?Those are the major problems I've found so far. The rest of the book is ok I guess, but for people who've already trained in wilderness medicine, advanced first aid, or have backpacked/camped a lot, this book has less to offer.

I got this as a bit of a gag gift. I read it while winter camping and ended up finishing the entire book in long night. Emerson blends functionality, humor, and a bit of unpredictability into what ends up being a pretty good book. I like his teaching method and will be using the book as a reference to teach a nine year old basic survival skills. I will wait till the boy is a little older before we cover the chapter on how to hide a body.

This book is a continuation of his first book, 100 Deadly Skills, which I also read. Clint is a BTDT type from the SOF community as a SEAL of note, so his advice not typical mall ninja nonsense you'll often find out there.Both books supply easy to read concise advice on surviving a wide variety of possible threats and make for excellent reference guides on the topic. Sort of cliff notes for how not to die from a wide range of potential threats.The first focused on some tricks of the trade for all manner of threats and strategies more common to people who go into harms way for a living, and the second contains advice on threats more common to a larger audience and civilians, such as fires, natural disasters, home invaders, etc. I prefer the first book personally, but that's due to the fact I enjoy learning about spy craft and how high level people working in difficult and dangerous situations survive.The first more fun to read, the second more applicable to a large audience and most civilian types, although civilian types will pick up some excellent tips from the first book too.Either a worthy read, both worth reading in our modern world.

Excellent book full of great details anyone can use to prepare for the worst, should it happen. I really enjoy trying many of the skills, within reason, pointed out in the book. Practiced the navigation tips as well. I will tell you practice makes perfect. It's just fun to do.

This is an entertaining book. Offers a lot of resourceful information and some unique methods of survival. I have learned quite a bit from the book. Granted, I do not think I will use much of it, I do not think I will find myself stranded in a desert for example. But, the knowledge is great, it provides perspective, and also, you have to figure, anything is possible.

If you have family & friends who don't exactly embrace Being Prepared, then consider this the a book that is written in a way that they can consume quickly & easily. Easy to pick up, but hard to put down.

This is a fun book. I got it for my husband. It even has details for how to deal with someone coming into your house (intruder), and surviving bear or shark attacks. Also includes things like avalanches and what kind of emergency things to carry in your car. A very visual book with illustrations on every single page. Very cool pocket guide. Really quick, applicable tips.

Good basic information. Does not dive in to complex info. I would recommend this to any one learning or a quick over view for more advance survivalist. Because we some times teach others but forget to keep it simple.

Informative and easy to read. I must for project managers and those growing in this management arena.

The definition of the word practitioner is "a person actively engaged in an art, discipline, or profession". If you are actively engaged in the art, discipline or profession of project management, then you just found the only book you will need to be successful at it.Lynda has done a wonderful job of distilling down the techniques involved in all the stages of the project management lifecycle and making them available in a concise guide that is easy to understand and implement. Her combination of actual project management experience and extensive teaching experience provides a perfect mix of real world experience as well as an insightful method of teaching these techniques to others.The illustrations add just the right touch to make the techniques come alive for those of us who learn better "visually" as opposed to "textually". As a life-long project management "practitioner", I am sure I will come back to this book again and again as a reference and invaluable project management resource. Highly recommended!

This book is a great resource for the practicing project management professional at all levels. It has a nice easy flow with fantastic sketches to both emphasize the point and to also show how to use the tools. There are several useful tools and techniques in the book (ITTOs) that show Ms. Carter understands the subject and how to be effective.What I like most about the book is the extensive collection of techniques and tools including WHEN and HOW to use them. There are many simple presentation components (tables, flow charts) that a new project manager can use as examples to communicate with stakeholders.

This was a very helpful book and a quick, easy read. The illustrations add a really nice touch. The material was well presented in an interesting and applicable manner. I highly recommend it to anyone who is in a leadership position or pursuing one. This book walks readers through the steps of project management in a clear, concise manner. I especially benefited from the author's real life examples from her prior experiences. Anyone who is responsible for managing a project or a team will benefit from the techniques that are explained in simple terms in this book.

From the perspective of someone new to Project Management, I can honestly say that Lynda's approach makes it easy to understand, applicable to my career, and gives me a new appreciation for the planning and thought processes that go into a well done project.
