What an amazing book! I just finished it and enjoyed it immensely. It hit so many emotions for me. Thank you for sharing your experiences, which I feel relates to all of our experiences, in a wonderful piece of literature and art. Brian accurately captures the experiences of being a fire survivor in a very heartfelt and honest way. Forever grateful.

Brian Fies has once again told a story (or, in this case, stories) that perfectly snapshot an incredibly emotional and harrowing period of time. Much like one of his previous works, “Mom’s cancer,” his book walks people through the stages of grief, and explores the large and small ramifications of loss on a family, providing readers with a story that is simultaneously universal and incredibly personal. Fies outlines the importance of home, and gives readers a step by step guide to rebuilding a life.Illuminating, uplifting, raw, funny, and overwhelmingly human, everyone will finish the book with a richer understanding of what a home really is, and how we connect our identity and lives to the world around us. Fies is a master story teller and his writing his emotional journalism: accurate, fact-driven, captivating, and important. He does justice to every story he tells and his words will stand the test of time long after the Sonoma county fires are out of living memory. This is an absolute must read.

Thousands of houses were destroyed in the Tubbs Fire in Santa Rosa and as many families were thrown into chaos. Brian Fies brings us into his story, but he's also a journalist, telling other people's stories. The drawings and text are walking me through the story, then a page turn hits me, like 37 to 38, 67 to 68, or 126 to 127. I know those numbers mean nothing to you, so read the book. Find the page that hits you in the heart.

We lived down the street from Brian Fies and we too lost our home and all the memories it contained. Fies captures in his drawings and text the real story of what it was and is like to be a survivor of wildfire. Each drawing captures one small moment or emotion that means so much to us. Some brought smiles, some brought laughter, and others brought tears so powerful I closed the book to regain my composure. It is the real fire story that unfortunately was and will be shared by too many. I like the way he ends the book, ""Ideas like "Family," "Community," "Tradition," and "Home" mean more to me now than they did before,"" To me, that is the essence of my fire story.

I live in the same neighborhood as Brian. When I first read the shorter version, I felt like I was right back there, like Brian's experience was exactly my own. He captures how scared, vulnerable, lost... we all felt. We all feel still at times. Brian is a wonderful writer and cartoonist. I kept thinking Brian was in my head as I read the book but also appreciated the way in which he told the story, using care when sharing one of the (or the) worst experience of many of our lives.

Loved this book - a few tears were shed and memories rekindled. This experience affected everyone and everyone was there trying to helpSonoma County strong!

Heartfelt memoir about losing your home in the worst wildfire in decades. A Fire Story is sad but ultimately uplifting.Multiple fires merged into a Northern California firestorm of epic proportions. The resulting burn area was the size of 15 Manhattans. Entire neighborhoods burned to the ground overnight. Warnings were mishandled so many survivors had virtually no time to take any belongings. Others didn’t escape in time. The author, a graphic memoirist, uses his craft to document, in real time, the horrific experience of losing your home and all your stuff in a split second. While he is grateful his family is safe, he states, “Well-meaning people say, ‘It’s just stuff.’ But it’s our stuff. Stuff we created. Stuff we treasured. Stuff from our ancestors we wanted our descendants to have. Stuff is a marker of time and memory. It’s roots.”Wow, A Fire Story is so real! It throws the reader into a situation that, luckily, few will experience. It will make you appreciate your own stuff more. For myself, I live in a fire-prone area. We’ve been across the street, literally, from two major fires in two different homes and subject to voluntary evacuation orders. I have a bug-out bag of my family pictures and heirlooms ready to go. Are you ready? If you have been toying with prepping for disaster as a New Year’s resolution, A Fire Story is an excellent shove in that direction. But it is also an exceptional look at human resilience and resourcefulness. I can’t recommend it highly enough. 5 stars! Thanks to the publisher, Abrams ComicArts, and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Whether it's facing a life-threatening illness ("Mom's Cancer") facing fears of the future ("Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow") or seeing everything you've ever owned literally disappear in a puff of smoke ("A Fire Story") Brian Fies weaves true, compelling stories in down-to-earth, human terms.Through his words and drawings, Brian puts the reader in the center of the 2017 maelstrom that took his home and his neighborhood away. Pondering the unimaginable, such as thinking of what items to rescue in the back seat of your car when your world is 10 minutes away from oblivion, is only one of the many painful decisions and questions the Fies family had to deal with, along with so many other victims of the Tubbs Fire. To be able to portray the terror and cataclysms of that night and the soul-crushing days that followed is a rare talent, and Brian shares his insights and art with the world brilliantly in this magnificent volume.I'm choosing five stars for this review because Amazon won't let me score it a 10. Do yourself a favor and savor this book slowly.
