Just looking at the cover of this book evokes the imagination. It immediately calls to mind, C.S. Lewis's The Magician's Nephew, J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and more recently N.D. Wilson's 100 Cupboards. But the book also takes me back. When I was in university as a mature student it seems that every month or two my spiritual director was recommending another book by Peter Kreeft. In fact, when I check I had read 14 books by Kreeft in 4 years. But I was greatly surprised to find out that It had over a decade since I had read one of his works. If his works in the last few years are as excellent as this, I need to add them all to my to be read list. This book was an absolutely wonderful read.Kreeft begins the introduction when addressing how many philosophies of life there are begins with two answers; Answer 1 Three Philosophies of Life, and answer 2 there are only two philosophies. In the first answer the three types are:1. Wonder begins in surprise.2. This second kind of wonder-questioning-is wonder in the intellect, guided by the will (the "will to truth", which is far from automatic).3. Wonder is consummated in contemplative awe.And then he states:"Philosophy not only begins in wonder (#1), it also proceeds by means of wonder (#2) and ends in wonder (#3).This book is about the third kind of wonder."But then he goes on to give a second answer. Again he states:"When you think about it logically, there are two and only two philosophies of life. For either there are or there are not doors in the walls of the world. Either there is Nothing or Something outside Plato's Cave."And from there Kreeft goes on to explain that premise which is the basis for the rest of the book. He declares:"A wall is a limit. A door in a wall is a way of overcoming that limit, a way out of the place confined by the walls. The walls here symbolize the physical universe. The doors symbolize escapes from that limit, "morenesses", transcendences. The point of this book is that there are many doors through the walls of the world, many Jacob's Ladders through the sky."Kreeft then goes on a romp through literature to look at elements of story and elements in stories that breach that wall. The sections in the book are:I. The Plot: Story as LifeII. The Setting: The Fragility of TimeIII. The Characters: The Real Presence of Invisible FriendsIV. The Theme: JoyV. The Style: ArtBut the sections are not weighted equally. In the first section Kreeft gives 10 examples from 10 stories.Story #1: The Colorado Water DropletStory #2: The Bouncing Acorn and the Bouncing SpermStory #3: One Grain of SandStory #4: The True Causes of World War IIIStory #5: The Cheap Egyptian Tailor Who Saved the WorldStory #6: Thornton Wilder's TapestryStory #7: Mark Helprin's Perfect PaintingStory #8: William James' Dystopian UtopiaStory #9: The "Ridiculous" Point of The Brothers KaramazovStory #10: H. G. Wells' "The Door in the Wall"The section on Characters has four chapters, God, angels, Saints and extraterrestrials. Both the sections on Theme and Style have 5 chapters. But the section on Setting is just a single chapter. This book was an incredible read. I could hardly put it down. It has made me reflect more on some of my favorite fiction, and inspired me to add some of them back into my to be read pile along with some of the other books Kreeft drew examples from. This is one of those books I know I will end up reading again. Much like Kreeft's own Between Heaven Hell, which I read every year for several years in a row. Any series fan of fiction will benefit from read this book! And Christian's especially will see the veil pulled back a bit and experience fiction, the world visible and the world invisible in a new way after reading this excellent book!

The Merriam-Webster College Dictionary defines ‘Twilight Zone’ as a world of fantasy, illusion or unreality’. Secular humanists claim that religion is a fantasy, but Christians claim that God and Christianity are real. Materialists claim that only matter exists. Boston College philosopher Peter Kreeft’s new book, Doors in the Walls of the World argues persuasively that there are several clues that an afterlife does in fact exist. Using his imagination and philosophical arguments, Peter Kreeft travels to the end of the universe and looks through those doors.Kreeft starts his book by using the metaphor of the material universe as a wall, and doors in the wall would be paths to the spiritual universe beyond. He offers several arguments in support of theism, as follows:Human consciousness and free will cannot be explained in material terms. That we can know truths about the whole universe is evidence that our minds are above the material universe, since one can’t know an object unless one is outside it.The historical credibility of the Bible, the fact that most people have believed in God, and the history of religion making people happier and nobler all show that history supports belief in God.The physical sciences have shown that the universe is rational and based on mathematical laws, which suggests that whatever created the universe was rational and understood mathematics.Psychology suggests that people need meaning in their lives, and that without God, there is no true meaning and only despair. Yet people intuitively sense that life is meaningful.Religion and philosophy have provided many good reasons to believe that God is real, from Aquinas’s five proofs for the existence of God to the miracles reported by Christianity and other religions.Beauty is a clue to the truth about reality. Our universe is a magnificent and beautiful work of art, and a work of art requires an artist. In a similar vein, Kreeft notes that some philosophers have become theists upon hearing the music of Bach, since such music is so heavenly it could only have come from God. And he also mentions that God made the universe for the delight of mankind. That’s a beautiful thought.Great literature also supports the existence of God, and Kreeft cites Dostoyevsky’s novel The Brothers Karamazov and Thornton Wilder’s novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey as examples of literature that supports belief in a benevolent God.Kreeft states that the story of mankind is a real story, and a story needs an author. He points out that to understand a story, you need more than logic – you also need intuition and appreciation. In addition to presenting convincing arguments that God, heaven and souls are real, this book defines joy as deep, fleeting happiness that fills you with delight, and notes that joy is the true purpose of life, and that permanent, lasting joy exists only in heaven. Kreeft notes that happiness can get boring, since it is the satisfaction of our desires, but at least happiness lasts longer than pleasures, which fade quickly.Another bonus is a brief definition of art as the cultivation of beauty. Real art is good and beautiful and true, and it inspires. With the definition of joy noted above, this book is a joy to read and is itself a door in the wall of the world. This book is clear, concise, compelling, true and beautiful, and you’ll thank God you read it.

I bought this for a birthday gift for one of my sons. Another one looked interested so I bought it for him too. I think I'll get it also for my youngest son, who met Dr. Kreeft several years ago at our state's pro-life conference. Thank you Dr. Kreeft!
