It's always difficult to review a book that has hundreds of reviews without repeating those reviews. Here's my impressions:If you liked The Lightning Thief, you'll like this one. The first book had more of an impact because it *was* the first book. It had about a hundred more pages to set up the fascinating premise of the series. Also, author Riordan couldn't assume the success of The Lightning Thief so it reads much better as a stand alone book. Here, Riordan knows he has a hit on his hands so the book is definitely following through on the previous plot lines while setting up even more. It can be read by itself but I can't recommend that; start with The Lightning Thief. All the elements that made the first book so memorable are here as well. The humor is great and actually serves to advance the plot. The series is built heavily on the incongruities of ancient myths re-imagined in the modern world. That such incongruities are laugh out loud funny is a wonderful bonus.Riordan's narrator, 13 year old demigod Percy Jackson is a wonderful character that teens and not a few adults will have no trouble identifying with. His partner in adventure Annabeth Chase is likewise well rendered. Introduced in this book is the cyclops Tyson who quickly shows more depth than Percy or the reader suspects.Although (properly) marketed as a children's book it isn't written down to them. The book has a sophistication that adults will appreciate.Highly recommended but only after The Lightning Thief.
I had received the second book of Percy Jackson and it is starting fromthe first book lighting thief. I first thought it was going to be dull, but as I read itit was more interesting and In finished it, wishing for more. The second one I just gotis explaining who is who from the first book and some knew are mentioned. It holds you attention and for young or old to enjoy, if you like stories of mythology. It's well written and there's other ones following this one. There are five books in all withthis. If you are looking for adventure in a book this may be what you're wanting. I can't waitfor the other ones. (JV).
When I was a second grader, a little girl with ponytails who had just barely overcome her dyslexia and started reading books, the Percy Jackson series was my favorite thing on earth and this was my favorite of them all. Perfect for grade school kids, and probably middle schoolers. I remember that, as a kid, I "shipped" Percy Jackson (the main character) and Annabeth Chase (one of his best friends) which means means that I really wanted them to be together as a couple, so all the scenes that they had together we're probably my favorites. I loved this book because it was hilarious, very fun and easy for me to read, and the storyline was also very intriguing and creative. I also loved the characters, especially Percy.
I am the biggest possible fan of Percy Jackson . This book is just perfect for tween , teen and adult readers . The perfect balance of adventure , humour and thrill . This is the third time I read this book and I still love this book . I read all the books in this series except one . I totally recommend it for everybody . This book also has a lot of Greek mythological characters and you can learn this all in a fun way . Very hard to keep this book down .I am a 11 year old girl and I love this . Please try this . You won't know anything by reading just one chapter , at least read the first two or three .Thank you Rick Riordan !
The premise of the series is that Greek mythology and its beasts, gods, etc. are actually real. That fact makes for a fun adventure. Another "intermediate" book (see my review on Titan's Curse)The plot of the series continues to evolve. Reminders of previous facts are conveniently sprinkled around. My 9 yo and I have read them together. We had very cool chats from it.
Read this in one day, thankfully this arrived in the mail the day after I finished the first book because I wanted to dive right back in. Before I even finished the 1st book I came on here and ordered the next two in the series. I loved the new characters we are introduced to in this book like Tyson, and Hermès they were my favorites alongside our three main characters. The novel size was shorter than the first which I didn’t mind. It was still packed with adventure, mythology, humor, and friendship. Starting the third novel in a few. Will need to order the last two in a few days. Best series I’ve read so far. Great series for any age and anyone.
My son loves these books and for content I would give 5 stars. I am giving less because of an amazon issue. I download these books and pay extra for the audio assist; which basically reads to you. I do this because my son is 11 years old and is dyslexic. He is reading at a first grade level and everything he is capable of reading he doesn't like. Finally, these books he loves! The main character is mistakenly labeled dyslexic and is very easy to relate to for my son. To have the opportunity for my son to enjoy reading on his own is amazing. However, my son uses the kindle through the Free Time kids app. The audio reader doesn't work in the free time......WTF?? So I gave my son the password and he actively spent every night reading along and it helped greatly with his vocab and other areas in school. The reason why I'm upset about the audio not being on the kid settings is because, like any other boy, when the book is over he now has access to the great exploration of the kindle world. He was searching the web and downloading tons of apps (over 50). I don't want to discourage him but I also can't give him free run... Why can't I share the audio when I share the book to the kids settings? It seems silly and a realistic request. Is there anyway to get this fixed?
