Review

"Stacy Schiff has managed to create a masterpiece."―Michael Korda, The Daily Beast"[Schiff] writes against the fabulous grain...There are countless books about Cleopatra, but this one, I suspect, would have been one of her favorites."―Laura Miller, Salon.com"Captivating...Ms. Schiff strips away the accretions of myth that have built up around the Egyptian queen and plucks off the imaginative embroiderings of Shakespeare, Shaw and Elizabeth Taylor. In doing so, she gives us a cinematic portrait of a historical figure far more complex and compelling than any fictional creation, and a wide, panning, panoramic picture of her world."―Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times"A swift, sympathetic life of one of history's most maligned and legendary women."―Kirkus"[A] dazzling, meticulous biography."―Caryn James, More"Schiff excavates truth from myth with vivid eloquence, taking us back to a life in a time and place that was both 'an orgy of pillage and murder' and 'the Paris of the ancient world.'"―Natasha Clark, Elle"Hugely compelling...Schiff sifts through gauzy mythology to uncover a brilliant young woman."―Vogue "[An] excellent, myth-busting biography....No one will think of Cleopatra in quite the same way after reading this vivid, provocative book."―Washington Examiner

Award winning author Stacy Schiff likes to take the path less traveled; she never wants to write the same book twice which means she journeys far and wide in terms of the subjects for her biographies. CLEOPATRA: A LIFE allows Schiff to dig into the world of antiquity and she gathers the best known facts about Cleopatra dismissing the fiction wherever possible although she'd admit that it's hard to separate sensationalism of the time, myth and fact about one of the best known and most wealthy women of the known world.Schiff mixes biography, history and gathers from contemporary reports as well as historians over the years trying to sort out that fact from the fiction and opinion of the time.Schiff's book is more a collison of history and biography because so little is known about Cleopatra from contemporary sources. The author provides us with the context of history to understand Cleopatra's role as the last great Queen of Egypt and what her allure would have been to Caesar and Marc Antony the two Romans that became both allies and lovers.I'll admit that I'm not an expert on this period nor about Cleopatra herself but did take a number of classics classes in college and have continued to read up on the subject over the years. From that perspective, I found Schiff's book to be informative, entertaining to read and occasionally enlightening with new facts that I had either forgotten or missed in the my past reading. She also debunks a number of myths that grown around Cleopatra over the years through (such as the fact that she committed suicide by the bite of an asp).We really don't know what Cleopatra looks like (aside from her profile on coins and statues that might possibly be her but as with many portraits from that time there's a very good chance they are incorrect)from the time which may not be a "true" portrait of her)some of the things we do know is that she was of Greek descent. There's nothing beyond a single line that was written by her that survives. Heck, she wasn't the FIRST Cleopatra but the seventh. She's a fascinating figure because she demonstrated the intelligence, wit and style that fascinated the known world of the time AND captivated both Ceasar and Antony. Schiff paints a vivid portrait of Cleopatra giving us context as well--there's plenty of history here about her family and the assassinations that would keep people like her in power.Schiff digs in deep pulling from a variety of sources going back to those who were contemporaries of Cleoopatra (such as Cicero who didn't care for her)Strabo as well as Appian, Dio, Plutarch sifting through their opinions, the bias of many historians and more contemporary scholars as well. As Schiff points out this is her work so any mistakes are strictly hers as are some of the observations and opinions she brings up about Cleopatra based on her research.I did expect her style to be a bit more breezy in nature but it is difficult to accomplish that with such a complex subject and, to her credit, Schiff accomplishes it most of the time although occasionally the book gets sidetracked as part of the author's attempt to document everything fully.Schiff's book is well written and, like her other biographies, well sourced (and footnoted)giving us a taste of the world of her subject and the challenges she faced from Rome and her own family. Recommended.

Ms. Schiff is an excellent historian, and a formidable talent as a writer. But, nonetheless, I found her a plodding story teller. The book is loaded with facts and insight into the period's events and numerous characters; but her writing often meanders into arcane, entwined language. She seems to have no sense of grammar, or paragraphing. Once on a thought line she can roll on over several pages, without taking a breath....or allowing the reader to do so. I suggest a good third of this book can be severely reduced, or completely eliminated, by any proficient editor. This book is not a smooth read.....it requires work and commitment. Having said that...............this book is loaded with deeper human insight into why this passage of history unfolded as it did. The reader easily becomes enamored to Cleopatra, and Anthony. Plus, the events of this period are wonderfully presented (the intrigue, the battles, the politics, the loves, the hatreds) as the saga of the Roman civil war period plays out.........for both serious students or the more casually motivated. It is said that a sculptor sees his final piece hidden within the block of marble he confronts on day one of a project as he then goes about removing the excess.........such is this book. Ms. Schiff's work would be an excellent basis to extract a crisp screen play.........HBO's Rome possibly?

The Cleopatra most of us know is a fictional creation. The story we know comes mainly from the early first century Roman writers Plutarch and Dio. According to author Stacy Schiff, that’s like reading a history of twentieth-century America written by Chairman Mao. In short, our image of Cleopatra is “the joint creation of Roman propagandists and Hollywood directors.” Schiff’s primary point is that “If the name is indelible, the image is blurry.”Her real story, as told by Schiff, is every bit as fascinating as that told by Shakespeare. Cleopatra descended “from a line of rancorous, meddlesome, shrewd, occasionally unhinged Macedonian queens,” Schiff writes and would prove to be a true daughter of her ancestors. Her name, which translates to “Glory of her Fatherland,” is fitting. Born in 69 BC, the second of three daughters in a family known for eagerly liquidating siblings, she would prove to be both the strongest and shrewdest of the brood. She may not have been as traditionally beautiful as legend would have it, but she was certainly sagacious, sophisticated, and well-educated, speaking as many as seven languages fluently, including native Egyptian, the only Ptolemaic monarch to learn the local dialect. From the Roman point of view, Egypt was a tricky subject. The richest, most agriculturally productive region in the ancient world, Egypt was, according to the classicist Ronald Syme, ”a loss if destroyed, a risk to annex, a problem to govern.” Julius Caesar arrived on Egyptian shores in 48 BC in hot pursuit of Pompey, his chief rival in the Roman Civil War, who had just been slain at Pelusium by Ptolemy XIII, a deed for which Dante would place the Egyptian king in the ninth circle of hell next to Cain and Judas. Like others who came before and after him, Caesar was entranced by the grandeur of Alexandria, “the Paris of the ancient world,” in Schiff’s romantic language, the most cultured, the most beautiful, the most refined city ever known to man. Caesar found the young Cleopatra equally intoxicating. He would make her queen – and pregnant.Caesar brought Cleopatra back from Alexandria to Rome, which Schiff likens to “sailing from the court of Versailles to eighteenth century Philadelphia.” He also brought back with him other marvelous creations of Egypt, such as the 12-month calendar, the 24-hour day, and a large public library. “It was difficult for anyone to come into contact with Ptolemaic Egypt and not contract a case of extravagance.” Indeed, one might argue, as Schiff does, that “Cleopatra properly qualifies as the founder of the Roman Empire,” because, as Lucan wrote a century after Caesar’s death, “she aroused his greed.”Cleopatra was a 26-year-old mother of Caesar’s only male child, Caesarian, living comfortably at Caesar’s villa outside of Rome when he was assassinated on the Ides of March. She was blindsided by events and would never again set foot in Rome. She would eventually fall for Mark Antony, Caesar’s most trusted lieutenant, a man “given to good living, great parties, bad women,” a brilliant cavalry officer who possessed all of Caesar’s charm but none of his self-control. Cleopatra needed Mark Antony. Octavian, the inheritor of the mantle of Caesar, was “a walking, plotting insult to her son,” Caesarian. Mark Antony’s obsession with conquering Parthia proved to be a blessing for her as only the wealth of Egypt could underwrite such an expensive campaign.Cleopatra and Mark Antony met at Tarsus in 41 BC. Her effect on the Roman general was “immediate and electrifying,” according to Schiff. The queen engaged in “a take-no-prisoners school of seduction.” The author claims that Tarsus was a rare instance when the life and legend of Cleopatra completely overlap. She brought Mark Antony back to Alexandra where he “swallowed the whole Greek culture in one gulp.” The “barrel-chested, thick-thighed Roman” fell in love with Alexandria, “a city of raspberry dawns and pearly late afternoons, with the hustle of heterodoxy and the aroma of opportunity thick in the air.” Cleopatra bore him twins in 39 BC, Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene; but more importantly for the stability of the Mediterranean world, Mark Antony married Octavian’s sister, a marriage alliance not unlike Pompey’s to Caesar’s daughter, Julia, in 59 BC, a union that offered a half-decade respite to internecine strife in Rome.Mark Antony’s long-awaited Parthian campaign was a failure; perhaps not on the scale of the disaster that befell Crassus in 53 BC, but bad enough that he lost 24,000 men (a full third of his army) and recorded no noteworthy victories in 18 modest battles. Meanwhile, Octavian had been piling up successes (e.g. he had crushed Sextus Pompey and kicked fellow triumvir Lepidus to the curb). Schiff writes that Antony was despondent, nearly suicidal. It was Cleopatra’s “blue ribbon rendition of the lovesick female” that rallied him. In the so-called “Donations of Alexandria” in 34 BC, Antony distributed the Roman Empire in the east to their children, who were part Roman and part Egyptian gods. The view from Rome, Schiff says, was that the Donations were “an empty gesture, a farcical overreaching by two slightly demented, power-drunk dissolutes.”In 32 BC Mark Antony divorced Octavia. The pretext for the final showdown had finally arrived. Antony was, in Octavian’s opinion, “irredeemably contaminated by the Oriental languor and the un-Roman luxuries of the East.” He relished the stories of how Antony fawned over Cleopatra like a eunuch, giving her foot rubs in public, among other embarrassing acts of servitude. With the (dubious) claim that Cleopatra was “poised to conquer [Rome] as she had conquered Antony,” the Senate declared war on Egypt in October 32 BC and then voted to deprive Antony of his consulship and relieve him of all Roman authority.“The experience, the popularity, the numbers, were all on Antony’s side,” Schiff writes, “he was the skilled commander behind whom stood the most powerful dynasties of the East” and the vast riches of Egypt with its determined queen who could not co-exist with Octavian so long as her son, Caesarian, lived. Indeed, “Antony could not win a war without [Cleopatra]. Octavian could not wage one.” The culminating battle of Actium in early September 31 BC was as decisive as it was anticlimactic. Octavian had eroded Antony’s superior land force over the course of the summer by maintaining a close blockade. Cleopatra and Antony shamefully abandoned their army and fled to Egypt. The two lovers were cornered. Antony’s army disintegrated. Whole legions defected, as did allied kings. The raucous “Inimitable Livers” of Alexandria, as Antony and Cleopatra once playfully called their retinue, changed their club name to “Companion’s to the Death.” Antony was 53-years-old, Cleopatra 38. Their end was so theatrically dramatic that Shakespeare hardly had to change a thing. When Cleopatra had her death falsely reported to Antony, he fell on his sword in inconsolable grief. He lived long enough to learn that the queen was actually still alive and breath his last breathe in her arms. Nine days later Cleopatra took her own life in turn, most likely by poison, Schiff says. “Cleopatra’s asp is the cherry tree of ancient history”: Schiff claims that there is no way a single snake could have killed the queen and her two faithful attendants, Iras and Charmion, so quickly and peacefully. “A fourth casualty of August 10, 30 BC may well have been the truth,” she writes. One thing was for certain: Cleopatra would never be the crown jewel in Octavian’s fabulous triumph parade back in Rome, where the enormity of the Egyptian riches quickly led to massive inflation and a tripling of interest rates.Schiff wants us to appreciate Cleopatra for who she truly was – and for good reason. For far too long the great queen has been a caricature, completely misrepresented, unfairly maligned, and largely misinterpreted. “It has always been preferable to attribute a woman’s success to her beauty rather than her brains,” Schiff writes, “to reduce her to the sum of her sex life.” Clearly, Cleopatra was much more than a celebrated lover. Nevertheless, Schiff bemoans, “we will remember that Cleopatra slept with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony long after we have forgotten what she accomplished in doing so, that she sustained a vast, rich, densely populated empire in its troubled twilight, in the name of a proud and cultivated dynasty.” That she was “a remarkably capable queen, canny and opportunistic in the extreme, a strategist of the first rank.”Like every other book by Stacy Schiff that I’ve read, this one comes highly recommended. It is that rare book that both layman and experts will find satisfying.

I am using the workbook DK Workbooks: Geography, First Grade to supplement our first grade homeschool social studies lessons. The 60-page workbook topics include map reading, compass directions, continents, countries and states, borders, bodies of water, and more. Although not important to me, the workbook supports the Common Core State Standards. The workbook builds on the skills learned with in the kindergarten level edition. My only complaint it that, like all DK Workbooks, the pages are glossy and difficult to write on.

I used this with my home-schooled first-grader who really enjoyed it. It's rather too easy, but I thought it would be helpful to ensure I didn't forget any important topics. And you can speed through it very quickly. We usually do four pages a day and will be moving on to the second grade version. There's an included tally sheet of the page topics and gold stars. I have my son dole out his own stars after each session and he enjoys that, as well as doing all the work in colored pencil. If your child is a stickler for following the directions to a T and you feel you don't have time to allow for slow, tedious coloring pages, this may not be for you, as there are several pages that are easy, but take forever to color with pencil.

Nothing in depth here. But this has provided a nice mini-lesson to add to our homeschool daily lessons. I am using the book as a way to introduce the topic of geography to my first grader. After we complete a page or two, we sometimes expand on what was done on the internet or at our local library. The pages are bright, and easy to read and understand by my student. I don't like the "high-gloss" finish of the pages, since my kiddo likes to use gel pens.. they smudge easily on the pages. I DO like the gold star stickers for the lessons completed.

I feel for a first grader, the presentation of the subject could have been better. For many, this is a new subject and it would be nice if it were to feel and look exciting. The pages are black and white and when I think Geography, I think color- especially for a first grader!

Cute book and basic geography terms with good applicable activities. Love the stars for each accomplishment! Has a answer guide for each page and a certificate for the student at the end. Great price!

We use this workbook as a supplement to other social studies units in our homeschool. I like this workbook because the pictures are nice and big and clear, not confusing to my first grader. She may have one or two questions, or we go over the assignment before she starts, but content is easy to grasp and she is able to complete the assignments on her own for the most part once the goal is explained. She loves that it comes with gold stars, of course.

Geography? Intimidating for a homeschool mama! But this has opened up some really awesome conversations and helped spur on ideas for games. There are also complimentary resources on Pinterest!

We have been using this as our 2nd grade Geography. Its easy for my son to do himself and I feel like he is learning from it. It starts off going over a map and key and compass rose. We are now looking at continents and they go over the largest and smallest. It also includes little gold stars.

Chapter OneNesting"When I was two, my mother came home from the hospital cradling two mysterious bundles wrapped in soft blue blankets. One was my new baby brother. She handed me the other. Underneath the folds of that soft blanket was a beautiful doll, which my mother explained would be my special baby. My father followed her with a red wooden rocking chair that he placed near my mother's rocking chair. I vividly recall watching my mother breastfeed my brother, and I followed her every move to be sure that I was feeding my own baby properly, even though my breasts looked nothing like hers. My mother and baby brother gazed at each other adoringly during the feeding. I looked down at my own doll, whose eyes closed when she lay on her back. I wanted that lifeless doll to be real. I told myself, "I can't WAIT to grow up so I can feed my own baby!""Twenty--five years later I gave birth to my first child. The day I came home, I sat in our wooden rocking chair, and as I held my son close and nursed him, he opened his eyes to gaze at me. At once, an overpowering recollection of that early childhood memory returned, and tears began to flow as I realized, "THIS is what I have waited my whole life to do!" --Cathy, remembering 1981WELCOME TO OUR "La Leche League meeting in a book"! At a real meeting, you'd see a mix of pregnant women, mothers with new babies, and moms with older babies or children. You'd hear questions from women at different stages of motherhood. Some of it would sound right to you, some of it would answer questions you didn't know you had, and some of it you'd shrug and leave behind. We hope you'll do the same with this book. The cornerstone of La Leche League (LLL) meetings is addressing questions. While a book can never match sitting around with other mothers, we can address some of the typical questions at different stages, and tell you what mothers often share from their experience, along with the research behind it all. This first chapter of our "meeting in a book" begins with the questions pregnant mothers often have about breastfeeding. Even if you've already had your baby, the answers to these questions should make you feel good about what you're doing and tell you more about why breastfeeding is such a great thing to do."The newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of [his] mother, food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three."--Grantly Dick--Read, MD, from Childbirth Without Fear, 1955Is Breastfeeding Right for Me?The closer you are to meeting your new baby, the more you're probably thinking about what comes after birth. You're "nesting"--gathering the things your baby will need and making a place for him in your home. Those outfits are so cute! That changing table is precious! But while you're out shopping, your body is quietly preparing the real "nest" your baby will need--your breasts. They'll be all he really needs at first--his go--to place for warmth, security, comfort, love, and, yes, food. As cute as the outfits and decor are, what your baby will care most about is the way you and your body protect and nurture him.Breastfeeding is far more than just a way to feed your baby. It's the way you're naturally designed to begin your mothering experience. So why doesn't it always come naturally? Some of your friends may have told you all about their tough experiences. Maybe your mother couldn't breastfeed and you wonder if you'll have trouble, too. The great news is that we've learned a lot since your mother tried. We've learned more about understanding and respecting the instincts that you and your baby both have. We've learned that the fewer interventions you have during birth, the easier these instincts will be to tap into. And La Leche League is always here to help you work through any issues that come up.Maybe you want to breastfeed because you know it's best; science keeps finding new ways breastfeeding helps babies reach their potential and protect their mothers' health. Maybe you want to because it just feels right; every mother finds for herself all the little ways that breastfeeding brings her close to her children. Whether the urge comes from your head or your heart, breastfeeding is right for you. And it's definitely right for your baby. How Important Is Breastfeeding, Really?Extremely! There is almost nothing you can do for your child in his whole life that will affect him both emotionally and physically as profoundly as breastfeeding.Breastfeeding is also important to our own bodies. We can't think of an aspect of your baby's health that isn't affected by breastfeeding, and it affects a surprising number of your own health issues as well. This would be a much longer book if we described all the ways that breastfeeding is valuable for you, your baby, and your family, but here are a few highlights.Your Milk Is Your Baby's Normal FoodThere's no formula that comes even close to the milk your body creates. Your milk has every vitamin, mineral, and other nutritional element that your baby's body needs, including many that haven't been discovered or named yet, and it changes subtly through the meal, day, and year, to match subtle changes in his requirements. Living cells that are unique to your milk inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and viruses in his still--maturing system. And it's more than just living cells. For instance, interferon and interleukins are powerful anti--infectives. If you could buy them, they'd cost the moon. Your milk throws them in, free of charge. A squirt of your milk can even treat eye infections and speed the healing of skin problems!Without his normal food, a baby is at higher risk of ear infections, intestinal upsets, and respiratory problems. Allergies and dental problems are more common. Vision, nerves, and intestines don't develop fully. Because of all these differences (and many others not listed here), a formula--fed baby has a different metabolism and a different development, and gains weight differently during his first year. His kidneys and liver work harder to process the waste products from formula. He needs more of any medication to get the same effect. His immune system's response to vaccinations is less effective. The risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome or crib death) and infant death from many other causes is higher if a baby isn't breastfed. As an older child or adult, he is at a greater risk of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, type 1 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. He responds to stress more negatively and has higher blood pressure, both as an infant and in later life. There's a higher risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis in later years. There are numerous IQ studies showing deficits in children who didn't breastfeed, or who didn't breastfeed for long.Colostrum, the milk you produce in small amounts in the first couple of days after your baby is born (and which you started producing during your pregnancy), has concentrated immunological properties that are your baby's first protection against all the germs he is suddenly exposed to. This "first milk" contains high concentrations of secretory immunoglobulin A, or SIgA, an anti--infective agent that coats his intestines to protect against the passage of germs and foreign proteins that could create allergic sensitivities. Scientists have also recently discovered a new ingredient in human milk called pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI), which protects and repairs the infant intestine. It's present in all human milk, but it's seven times higher in colostrum, providing extra protection to that delicate and vulnerable newborn intestine. Think of colostrum as a complex paint designed to seal those brand--new intestinal walls (which were, of course, designed to receive it).Colostrum has an acid level that encourages a baby's intestines to welcome just the right mix of beneficial bacteria. And colostrum is a laxative that gets his intestines up and running and helps clean out all the tar--like stool called meconium that built up in his system before birth.Mature milk, which phases in during the first two weeks, has a still--unknown number of ingredients that contribute to lifelong health. Along with the interferon, interleukins, white blood cells, and SIgA, the breastfed baby gains an immune system nearly as sturdy as his mother's. Human growth factor continues to develop those intestines, bones, and other organs. Insulin for digestion, long--chain fatty acids for a healthy heart, lactose for brain development--it's all there. And just as important, it's there in forms that are available to a baby. Iron is added to formulas in forms that the baby can't readily use and which can actually be harmful since it increases the risk of intestinal infection, intestinal bleeding, and anemia. The mechanics of breastfeeding are important, too. When your baby breastfeeds, the muscles in his jaws are exercised and massaged in a way that causes the bones in his face and jaw to develop more fully. The jaw that results from bottle--feeding and pacifiers is narrower, with a higher palate that's more likely to restrict nose breathing. Babies who use pacifiers, instead of soothing themselves at the breast, are more likely to need speech therapy later. The child who breastfeeds for less than a year is much more likely to need orthodontia later on. Snoring and related breathing problems are more common as well.Your baby can design his own meal to suit his needs. If he's thirsty, he nurses for a shorter amount of time and gets a lower fat milk. Still thirsty? He asks to switch sides sooner and gets another thirstquencher from the other side. Extra hungry? He stays longer on the first side or nurses more vigorously, to pull down more highercalorie fat globules. Going through a growth spurt? If your baby takes more milk than usual, he'll have more milk available the very next time he nurses. If he drinks less than usual, your milk production scales back. Is he moving into toddlerhood and nursing less often? There will be more immune factors in your milk to keep him covered. Did he pick up some germs from the grocery cart handle? He communicates those germs to your breast at his next nursing, and it starts cranking out specialized antibodies. In a whole lot of different ways, your breast is Health Central for your baby.Breastfeeding Helps Keep You Healthy, TooBreastfeeding is the natural next step in the reproduction sequence: pregnancy ' birth ' lactation. When your newborn takes your breast soon after delivery, your uterus contracts and bleeding slows. Hemorrhage is a greater risk with formula--feeding, and your belly stays larger longer. If you breastfeed exclusively (without giving water, solids, or formula) and your baby nurses often, including at least once during the night, then your periods most likely won't come back for at least six months. Your chances of getting pregnant again will be extremely low during that time, too (see Chapter 8 for details).Breastfeeding helps many (not all) women lose weight readily. Nature gave you some of that pregnancy weight just for the purpose of making milk in the first few months. The natural design is for it to melt away by the time your baby is well started on solids.Women who haven't breastfed are at greater risk for metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors that makes heart disease and diabetes more likely. If you already have insulin--dependent diabetes, you're likely to need less insulin while you're a nursing mother.Breastfeeding is also an insurance policy against breast, uterine, and cervical cancer. (It may be that the lower estrogen level of lactation provides the protection; the longer you breastfeed, the stronger your insurance.) This doesn't mean it's impossible for you to get these cancers if you breastfeed, but you are less susceptible to them. Osteoporosis and fractures are also more common in women who didn't breastfeed.A formula--feeding mother's blood pressure is likely to be higher, probably because her neurological and endocrine responses are more pronounced than those of a nursing mother. Her overall physical and mental health take a hit as well, and in later years she remains at an increased risk of developing such autoimmune diseases as rheumatoid arthritis."I didn't realize what immeasurable joy breastfeeding could give ME. I thought it was supposed to be about giving to the baby, not to the mother. Those hormones just poured into me and I was in a blissed--out, euphoric state when I was breastfeeding. And, I have to say, it gave this very un--confident mom something I could finally feel confident and proud of myself for." --SamanthaHow Reliable Is Breastfeeding Research? You've probably heard that breastfeeding reduces the risk of infection and a bunch of childhood and adult illnesses and diseases, that it reduces the risk of allergy, and that it even raises IQ. But (are you sitting down?) none of it is true! Here's why: Let's say we're testing a new drug. We focus on the people who get the drug, with a group of ordinary people to compare them with. That's how we know what the drug did. It made things better or worse than normal. Accurate science focuses on the experiment, not the normal thing. Now think about most of the research on breastfeeding. Exactly--it's research on breastfeeding! And that means that virtually all our recent research was done backward, evaluating what's normal (breastfeeding) instead of evaluating the experiment (formula). It makes the high rates of formula--fed illness seem like normal baby health and breastfeeding seem like bonus points.Breastfeeding doesn't reduce the risk of infection, illness, and disease. It doesn't add IQ points. Breastfeeding results in normal good health and normal IQ. When babies aren't breastfed--and this is using the same information from the same studies, just shifting the focus to the true experimental group--they are at increased risk for all those short--term and long--term illnesses and diseases.Researchers have inadvertently hidden formula problems from us by focusing on the apparently fabulous "benefits" of human milk and breastfeeding, almost as if breastfeeding is a nice but unnecessary "extra." That's starting to change. More and more research articles are using the normal breastfed baby as the starting point, as good science requires, and are looking at what happens to babies when their normal system is altered. It can be a scary way for the public to look at infant feeding--to see a list of risks instead of a list of "benefits." But it's a more honest, accurate approach, and it's the one we've used.Breastfeeding doesn't give you brownie points. It's simply the normal way to raise a baby."Breastfeeding is a 'safety net' against the worst effects of poverty..."

I am a pediatrician and cannot recommend this book enough. It got my baby and I through the roughest part of establishing breast feeding. My baby is now 5 months old and still has never had formula (some of that is her though and not liking it, can't say I never ever tried). It took a good month to get over sore breasts and nipples, and a few weeks into it I almost gave up. I had so much advice to put her on a schedule, only let her feed every 2 and a half to three hours, etc, and she wanted to feed every hour for the first couple months of life. I thought I was going crazy. But this book advises differently, to not even watch the clock and just let your baby decide when to feed. That helped a lot, took a lot of pressure off me. And that advice makes a lot of sense, because more frequent feeds mean more let downs and higher levels of hormones. Not only that, this book answers so many questions about pumping and storing milk and things that I would have never thought to ask. I was always pro-breast feeding, but now I am passionate about it. Breast feeding my infant has become one of the best experiences of my whole life. Now I can help other moms who are struggling with establishing breast feeding and answer all their questions. I have recommended this book to many new moms as well. Thank you so much for this book!

I had high expectations for this book, based on the reviews, but I was honestly very disappointed. I found this book to be very judgemental. There was a lot of judgement around anything but a 100% drug free vaginal birth. I ended up with a premie (delivered by emergency c-section under general anesthesia) who needed intestinal surgery the day after birth. LO was on IV nutrition for 2 weeks, so when we finally got to try nursing, it was not the typical experience. There is practically nothing in this huge book to help someone under those circumstances, and in fact much of it and the stance of the writers made me feel angry and not at all understood. I'm sure lots of people have the type of experience that makes them receptive to the advice and viewpoints in this book, but not everyone and certainly not me.

Before I gave birth I read through this book like it was a bible. I had always planned to breastfeed and was determined to make it work. After giving birth to my daughter at 36 weeks, I desperately searched this book for answers as to why my supply wasn't coming in etc.As a previous reviewer said, this book will leave you high and dry if you are having problems breastfeeding in the days following birth. The mantra seems to be that it is so easy any mother can do it, and if you can't, you're not trying hard enough.

Good information for new breastfeeding mothers especially those who are struggling and need more credible research. This is many breastfeeding mothers go to book, just not mine. I gained more information from kellymom.com and by joining breastfeeding support groups on Facebook (yes that's a thing! Go do it if you'd like support on your breastfeeding journey) . The three groups that helped me most even more then this book on Facebook were Kellymom Breastfeeding Support, Milky Mommas, and now Breastfeeding Older Babies and Beyond. After struggling with a shallow latch, low supply, self doubts, nursing strikes and much more joining those groups helped me far more then this book. We're 21 months into our breastfeeding journey and nearing our 2 year goal. You can do it too!

This book spends so much time going on tangents about things that are not breastfeeding (sleeping, swaddling, drugs, natural childbirth) and it's really hard to find the information you need. I found the dense text impenetrable while sleep deprived. I needed more pictures, more troubleshooting techniques and a lot less, "breastfeeding is the best relationship you'll have..." and "if you had anything but a natural birth, well, no wonder you're suffering now from a bad latch, low supply, a colicky baby, you name it." As someone who was ultimately unable to go natural after over 40 hours of natural labor, it made me feel really attacked at a time when I just could not handle criticism. Months later I don't really care. I got a lactation consultant and figured it out and my hormones aren't making me feel like every little decision is the end of the world. In the moment, though, it made me feel desperate and like a failure.

I loved this book! I bought and read it before I gave birth to my daughter, and then when I was first starting out breastfeeding I would consult it when I had questions. It had a number of tricks and pointers that were helpful to me as a first time mom and was overall empowering and supportive. I enjoyed reading about what to expect from breastfeeding and what the timeline would be, and the reminders that breastfeeding is a relationship that, although natural, demands commitment and perseverance, more than once made me feel better about how things were going. The section on pumping was also helpful to me because I knew that I would be going back to work.5 months later we are still going strong, and I think this book is part of the reason why. For example, I had friends quit breastfeeding because they were worried they weren't producing enough milk, or it hurt too much, or any number of reasons. I think that if they (and women in general) read this book, they would understand that many worries about breastfeeding are unfounded and that other things (e.g., pain) may not be normal but that there are resources to help. My dad asked me why I needed to read a book about breastfeeding ("Isn't it normal and natural?") and I told him it's because not many women grow up seeing babies being breastfed (I know I didn't). It is natural, but it's not always easy (especially not at the beginning). This book was incredibly helpful to me because it gave me a sense of what to expect. Honestly, without it I might have given up on one of the evenings in the first few weeks of my daughter's life when it seemed like she would never stop eating. Instead, I knew that cluster feeding was natural and would not last forever (and now I've practically forgotten there was a time when she ate that often). I would recommend it to any expecting mother.

I coach startups in the EU to transform their idea into a successful business. During that process the finance part is a critical phase and a phase where future entrepreneurs are not familiar with. I had the opportunity to read the draft version and It amazed me from page one. This book gives a lot of insights and does so in an understandable, easy to read way. Theory and real life examples are naturally balanced.

It’s a fantastic book who give me a solid knowledge how an investor thinks.I recommend the book, it has a systematic flow in information.

Being a serial entrepreneur and business angel, Nicolaj provides lots of insights of how to get funding from a investor starting from co founders and family members for funding missions to eventually progressing to start up accelerators, business angels, venture capitals and public funding and banks and crowd funding..The book starts with good case studies - questioning the need for external funding in first place. I liked the Case study: Casper Blom – how to start a business at 12 years old with no funding.Chapter 2 focuses on how to develop your startup's risk/reward profile including influencing factors like market, business model, you, and the team and progress and traction. This chapter also has a good case study - Case study: Mofibo – why the CEO was the onlyreason the venture capital (VC) fund invested.Chapter 3 focuses on Who invests in what and when - Elaborates the investor market by segmenting the investors like VCs, Angels etc.. more inclined to invest in high risk and high reward segment while conservatives like banks etc.. more inclined towards the low risk and low reward quadrant. One more key point I liked was profiling of investment communities into WHEN they invest in life cycle in addition to where they invest.Nicoloaj has taught me something new here. Having different investors involved as appropriately in life cycle with a good case study - Case study: Funding for The CloakRoom – different investors for different stagesChapter 4 is an important one - Why can’t you find an investor? - Elaborates on why investors don't invest on ideas alone. Builds on 3 factors (Market, team, technology) that makes investors to invest. After this chapter this book focuses on different evolutionary investor profiles like co founders as investors to friends and family members to VCs to banks and crowd sourcing. What I liked about the book - Associated concise real world examples that will stick with you for a long time along with each chapter ending with a few summary key takeaway elements.I would recommend this book strongly because it delivers what the tile says - The Startup Funding Book..

Nicolaj wrote a very pragmatic and provided and comprehensive portrayal of prospective ways of fund raising. This book is a very practical guide for any aspiring startup bug . It tried to encapsulate all defined phases of gig..to approach investors in which stage and how meaningful to present target investor in a very practical way.I liked the examples shared and some are applicable to my journey also. The author clearly able to present the internal thoughts of VCs and angel investors. The author describes very detailed from both the entrepreneurs’ perspective and various kinds of investors' side to better connecting the perceptive gap confronting start-up funding issues. In today's very fast moving world of innovative ideas, it is very much critical to match founder and possible investor. Often some people receive funds very early which may or may not be positive.I liked chapter 4 on “why can’t you find an investor? And Chapter 10 “Public funding” my situation was extremely well described here and author very clearly able to pinpoint issues. Also, issues with family funding and friend’s money are well articulated. However, for next edition, my wish list would be to consider Startup funding issues in Asian geography also.Let me say that anyone interested in the startup culture must immediately grab a copy of this book. Author has dissected the entire process of startup funding.Traditionally funding of startup has been shrouded in mystery and urban legends. Nicolaj clarifies the mystery in a masterful narrative. This is an admirable effort. Well done, Nicolaj

This book is a very useful guide in understanding when, where and how to look for external funders for a business project. It is really well-grounded, based on real-life examples and provides very useful material to work on own projects.I like its structured approach and review of different scenarios, explaining what works and what does not from the funder side. One of the most useful parts, in my view is about raising money from friends and family and related consequences. I have seen how mistakes, described in the book, create problems in real life, when people, who invest, do not really understand what they are doing (and neither did those, who asked and received the money). In particular I liked the Chapter 13 about the business plans and other material to use, when communicating with potential investors. I have shared this with a number of people I know and it was really appreciated. We have also found, that working on development of executive summary and the pitch deck actually helped the start-up founders focus their own minds on what their project is about, why it matters and how to make it interesting for people for investment.I am sure I will refer to this book regularly.
